Event Description

The New Mexico Jazz Festival in partnership with The City of Albuquerque Cultural Services & Mayor Richard J. Berry; and Nob Hill Main Street are pleased to present Summerfest in Nob Hill, an all day to evening free event featuring 25 acts on 3 stages.

This year’s Nob Hill Summerfest event runs from 2pm-10:30pm and features 3 stages on Central (at Girard, at Washington, and the Cork & Tap at Montclaire), 25 acts, and 75 of the finest local musicians.

Headlining the evening at 9:00pm, on the main stage at Girard and Central, is Maceo Parker, a legend whose name is synonymous with Funky Music. A funk and jazz saxophonist, Parker is best known for his work with James Brown in the 60s, as well as George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic in the 70s. For the past sixteen years, he has been building a new funk empire, navigating between Brown’s 60’s soul and Clinton’s 70’s freaky funk while also exploring mellower jazz and the grooves of hip-hop. His timeless sound has garnered him a new young fan base with his catch phrase being, “2% Jazz, 98% Funky Stuff,” and his 8 piece band with whom he performs tonight has been called “the tightest little funk orchestra on earth.”

Also performing throughout the day and evening will be Hillary Smith & Soul Kitchen, Alpha Cats, Certified Organic, Son Como Son, Le Chat Lunatique, Wagogo, Midnight Creepers, Cathryn McGill, Pleasure Pilots, Humoso, Jasper, Zenobia, Django Rhythm Meat Grinder, Cali Shaw, and more!

Well, I'm glad I drove the 70 miles to see "the Teacher" because the company was great and the outdoor concert vibe was lovely but at the same time I have to say I was expecting a better show.

Maceo didn't seem to be enjoying himself that much (as compared to performance videos I've seen and listening to the live album I own -Live on Planet Earth) and and although the playing was adequate enough to make everyone smile, it didn't kick ass like I thought they would.

It also didn't help that the sound was muddy and the vocal mics for some reason couldn't be turned up loud or clear enough to really hear what everyone was saying/singing and we were only 75 feet from the stage. For example, Maceo introduced everyone in the band twice and I couldn't tell you any of the player's names. sad

Hour and a half show. All uptempo songs and two encores, just a couple of sax phrases from ballads as teasers between songs. Besides Maceo there was the drummer (youngest member with long dreadlocks), bassman, keysman, guitarist, trombone player and two back up singers who each got to front a couple times, one male, one female.

Songs I can recall:

Advanced Funk

Uptown Up

Gonna Have a Funky Good Time

Make My Funk the P-Funk/Southwick

We Gon Make it Funky

Soul Power

You Don't Know What Funk Is

Pass the Peas

Highlight of the show was when they weren't even playing. Maceo had us all singing about love acapella while he kept the beat with his voice. Great vibes!

I guess everyone can have an off night and Maceo on an off night is certainly better than most bands on a good one. At least I can check seeing Maceo off my bucket list but if I ever get a chance to see him in a small club you can bet I'm not gonna pass it up.
