DoNNa SuMMer, baby! I'd say start with her album, Bad Girls. And, kudos to you for widening your musical interest. Some people just stick with one genre and that's it. They are missing out! [Edited 7/26/11 3:19am]

I usually enjoy listening to the artists that inspired my favourites.
I would recommend everything that Stevie Wonder did circa 1971-1980 but maybe the Original Musiquarium double album is a better entry point.
If you enjoy James Brown you may like Wilson Pickett. If you can find it the double disc A Man and a Half: The Best of Wilson Pickett is a great collection. The Definitive Soul Collection has less songs but is easier to find.
For some rock mixed with your funk try some Funkadelic. Motor City Madness: The Ultimate Funkadelic Westbound Compilation is pretty great. Also, The Whole Funk & Nothing But the Funk: Definitive Funkadelic 1976-1981 does a great job of covering the later half of their career.
I believe that The O'Jays were a big influence on Michael Jackson. The Essential O'Jays 3.0 is a good compilation.
The 1996 The Very Best of Curtis Mayfield on Rhino is a good entry point for his '70s funk era. There's a great double disc collection (The Anthology 1961-1977) but the early tracks on that may not be to your liking. It may be better to try his '70s music first.
Aretha Franklin's Atlantic recordings are a must. Queen of Soul: The Atlantic Recordings is fantastic but if a four disc box set is too much then try 30 Greatest Hits.
If you are looking for someone with similarities to Prince and Michael Jackson try some Terence Trent D'Arby. For a brief time in 1987/1988 it looked like he was going to be a huge star but that never really happened. There are two compilation albums with similar tracklists (Greatest Hits and Do You Love Me Like You Say: The Very Best of). I would give the nod to Greatest Hits but they are both good compilations.
Prince is a big fan of Chaka Khan, you may want to investigate her recordings. Unfortunately there is no perfect compilation available. Ideally there should be a double disc set with one disc devoted to her years with Rufus and the other covering her solo recordings. I believe there is only one Rufus compilation (The Very Best of Rufus featuring Chaka Khan). It's good but at just ten tracks it is a little skimpy. For her solo years try Epiphany: The Best of Chaka Khan, vol. 1 also reissued under the title I'm Every Woman: The Best of Chaka Khan.
Are there any other genres that you are curious about? The above artists are all great but mostly of a similar genre.
I was roughly your age when I started branching out and trying different music. Before that I was mostly a metalhead. I'm about to turn thirty-one and am still constantly "discovering" new music. The bad news is that if you live to be a hundred you will never hear all of the great music that exists. The good news is that if you live to be a hundred you will never hear all of the great music that exists. [Edited 7/26/11 4:07am] [Edited 7/26/11 4:44am]

Terence Trent D'arby has some great albums...
Are you looking for other types of music or similar to what you already listen to? ‘You don’t understand — if I’m not there to receive these ideas, God might give them to Prince.’

Buy Guns N Roses Appetite For Destruction.
If you don't become a fan after three listens then there's something wrong with you.

when I was little...I was just a passive listener to music. It was on and i enjoyd it...didn't pay it much mind except for a typical childhood fascination with Michael Jackson....i believe that was more image/marketing oriented than anything.
I then became an active listener. Seeking and absorbing info and guidance.
My first source for "good" music was family ad friends....but they were usually as passive as I HAD been.
So I went to the musicians themselves. What were their inspirations, motivations, muses, friends.
THAT was my richest source of info. Look at what they like. Then when U get to what they like, look at the inspirations inspiration.
Prince led me to the Family stone, larry graam, joni mitchel, chick corea which led me to a hint of punk, which led me...who knows where
A family liking of Paul Simon's Graceland lead me to open up to sounds of the world and to an appriciation of the singer/songwriter and that flashy does NOT equal substance.
lemme stop there before I begin to list my whole musical journey here....
in all...look to your inspirations inspiration....it's not always logical but usually thourghly enjoyable. And even if it doesn't touch your soul, the information and links and bridges will help immensely in your musical journey.

Seriously, buy the album, then buy Use Your Illusions 1 and 2. Then buy Chinese Democracy.
This thread made me smile as it was like reading something I would've written ten years ago. I used to be just like you, pretty much only listening to MJ and Prince. I then branched out a bit to old funk music, Sly, James Brown etc and some 70s stuff like Bowie. Your thread is word for word identical to my own musical journey.
Then I got into Guns N Roses and it hugely widened my taste, opening many door to appreciate great rock music. [Edited 7/26/11 23:55pm]

Tori Amos is definately worth checking out. She has a huge body of work and is definately the greatest female songwriter of the last 25 years. Plus she's batshit crazy in the best possible way.
These are some of my Tori favourites:
