I was just listening to the 2-CD deluxe edition of Frank last night, in rememberance of Amy. Such a marvel as she was so young, singing mature and creative material that was unlike anyone was hearing or doing at that time. Amy was definitely an admirer and great interpreter of soul and jazz and this album perfectly showcased her voice and influences. Just a fantastic record! music

nod

Though I dug her as an artist and liked a couple of tracks of Back to Black...it's sad for me that I only just listened to Frank because of all the rave reviews..I never thought about it before...man what have I been missing...This CD is stellar.

I think somebody posted it earlier in this thread, but if you like Frank, check out her version of "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" that she did in 2004 for the Bridget Jones movie. It's got the same jazz-inflected production but the vocals let you see she was slowly maturing into the BTB style. It's a good mix of both albums, I think.

Exclusive: Ronnie Spector Pays Tribute to Amy Winehouse

I haven't been this sad in a long time, about anyone in this business. I tried to go grocery shopping for my family, and I was walking like a ghost in the aisles. I could think about nobody but Amy.

When I saw her two weeks ago on TV and she was all drugged out, drinking and stuff, I said, "Damn it, damn it, damn it, damn it! Don't become like I was 20 years ago! I cleaned up. You gotta clean up!" And two weeks later, she's dead. I'm devastated.

Every time I looked at her, it was like I was looking at myself. She had my beehive, my eyeliner, my attitude. She had such a great soul in her voice and her lyrics were so amazing that I couldn't help but sing one of her songs. I was so happy to see an artist like Amy, because she reminded me of my youth. And she loved girl groups. Damn it! I thought she would carry on.

When I was in my 20s, I was a lost girl – drinking, not knowing what to do or where to go. I never did drugs – like, "No way, you're not gonna put a needle in my arm!" – but drinking is just as bad. In the Sixties, everyone was doing drugs, and I lost many people in the business. I knew Jimi Hendrix. I used to play with him down in the Village.

When I had a Number One hit all over the world, the Rolling Stones were my opening act. I was around all the druggies, but my mother also traveled with us, wherever I was. She was a buffer so I didn't see all of the bad stuff.

You can't go around people who drink or do drugs, even family members. I learned that 20 years ago in A.A. I had two boys, and, when they were four and five, we moved to Connecticut. In New York, there were liquor stores on every other corner, and I didn't need that. I knew enough to leave that. Now I don't drink. I don't do anything but my shows and take care of my kids.

Amy came to my show in London about six months ago, and she was so shy. She was hiding behind somebody, but I could see the hairstyle, and I knew she was there. That was all I needed. When I sang "Back to Black," I could see the tears in her eyes, and there were tears in mine.

Agreed! I wish it was on the deluxe edition of Frank. Perfect transition in what she would do on Back to Black.

I am very... curious as to the unreleased material she has floating around ready for release. It is supposed to be 2 years worth of material, and a lot of it. I'm mostly curious because if "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" is considered a transition from Frank to BTB, I suppose the ska b-sides from BTB and even "It's My Party" provide transition to the next work. Which is interesting. lol.

I was heartbroken when I heard she passed. I have been a huge fan since before she hit stateside (thanks to a music snob exboyfriend who caught Frank early on) and was really looking forward to the new material and the new era. I know she had been trying to clean herself up lately and was slowly getting there, despite the rough go in Belgrade. What a tragedy. Always had high hopes for her and always knew she would clean it up one day.

Wow for some reason I was thinking of Ronnie Spector this morning. I think it's beautiful she got to sing "Back to Black", that would've been amazing for Amy.

Sorry for posting this, but it shocked me...

In my today's newspaper there was an article about Amy and somebody made a comment to the journalist saying that it's disgusting that for quite a long time, there was a site here people would bid on when she would die.. with a price at the end...wow...

sigh boo disbelief

RIP Amy.

RIP Amy.

But that's the thing. Has there ever been a person who's addictions have been so completely chronicled and widely distributed as hers? The media played the "look at the f**k-up" game with her for so long it was utterly ridiculous. They were essentially playing the same game as that website - when will she die? It's just too f**king sad.

Why apologise? You obviously wanted to post it.

I'm not the least bit surprised that sites like that exist. After all, it's the Internet.

What saddens me more is when they are given even a sliver of publicity by those who care about Amy.

Yes, I think that is exactly how I felt. That she'd merely survive was good enough for me because Back to Black is such a priceless and timeless work -it woulda been okay if she had to leave the bizz to get fully better forever.

However, it didn't really matter what anyone said to her. Like she wrote in her songs, if she wasn't done crying, she wouldn't feel any true need to stop outwardly coping.

I've been listening to it. It's giving me flashbacks to 2007 when I was first introduced to her and her music. I agree with everything you say and I can't possibly add more. It's a wonderful record

This made me shed a tear, I've just been listening to Amy's music today, feeling down, saying goodbye.
Everything about her was honest, even when she talked about her addictions she was honest. Not like some celebrities who hide the truth about themselves so they dont tarnish their image. She didn't care about pretending to be somebody, everyone knows who she was because she lived it every day. A unique individual, there will never be another Amy Winhouse. R.I.P Amy, Your legacy will live on for a long time. We have lost a true artist.

12 New Winehouse Songs Set For Release?

07.28.2011

Link

A spokesman close to Amy Winehouse's record label has said that the late singer had recorded around 12 new songs which may now see the light of day.

The anonymous commenter is said to be linked to Universal, which owns Winehouse’s label Island, and revealed that though the songs are unfinished, their "framework" was in place. She had been in and out of the studio for the last three years, according to the spokesman, who said:

Amy had expressed an interest in getting back into the studio, and after some consultation everyone thought that would be a positive thing and a distraction from the other things she was dealing with.

He added:

She had put down the bare bones of tracks and some were further along than others. People were getting very excited, quite frankly they were really good. We heard rough cuts and they sounded like vintage Amy.

Universal chief executive, Lucian Grainge heard the songs as and when Winehouse was happy for him to do so. In November 2008 he spoke at the Music Industry Trust Awards, revealing that tracks he had heard sounded "sensational".

If any new material is released, it would have be decided on by her parents, as well as her label and management company, reports The Guardian.

This time last year, Winehouse explained that her third album would be released in January 2011, saying:

The album will be six months at the most. It's going to be very much the same as my second album, where there's a lot of jukebox stuff and the songs that are ... just jukebox, really.
