The first two cuts of Olu Dara's first solo album, From Natchez to New York.

(Olu Dara is Nas's dad. Singer, songwriter, guitarist and cornetist, his music is the real deal- a swampy, deep south, old style blues not too far removed from its African roots. The songs are so obscure they are not on youtube).

This first one, Okra, takes you to the neighborhoods where the arrival of the travelling fruit and vegetable vendor was much anticipated. Charming.

The second one is a snakey, hypnotic groove about a man who is having a hard time getting home to his baby because of a rain that has turned all the rural unpaved roads to mud.

ok... I checked out that first link by Olu Dara and I liked it but it was NOTHING like I expected.

The album may indeed be full of mississippi blues but I think that one had a nice flowing almost light reggae/calypso/carribean feel to it- the music DEF not the vocals, the vocals are def american... which made that an interesting formula.
