New York, NY, June 13, 2011 - The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today that it has acquired U.S. distribution rights to "W.E.," Madonna's directorial debut of a feature film. W.E. is a romantic drama co-written by Madonna and Alek Keshishian, produced by Madonna and Kris Thykier and executive produced by Scott Franklin (BLACK SWAN). It stars Abbie Cornish (LIMITLESS), Oscar Isaac (DRIVE), James D'Arcy (MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD), Andrea Riseborough (NEVER LET ME GO), Natalie Dormer ("The Tudors"), Richard Coyle (PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME), James Fox (SHERLOCK HOLMES) and Laurence Fox ("Inspector Lewis"). The announcement was made by TWC Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein and President of Production Donna Gigliotti.

Spanning six decades, W.E. juxtaposes a contemporary love story with that of King Edward VIII and American divorcee Wallis Simpson.

"W.E. is about the nature of true love, and the sacrifices and compromises that are often made. I've wanted to tell this story for a very long time, and bringing it to life has been a great adventure for me. I'm looking forward to working with Harvey and The Weinstein Company on this film," commented Madonna.

"Madonna has really come into her own as a filmmaker with W.E.," said Weinstein. "She's taken one of the most famous romances of the 20th Century and brought it to life in a smart, sexy and thoroughly modern way. It's a terrific addition to our US release slate."

Commented Gigliotti, "The advance footage for W.E. was some of the most impressive I've ever seen. I can't wait for American audiences to have the opportunity to see this film."

The deal was negotiated for TWC by Weinstein, COO David Glasser and Michal Steinberg, Senior Vice President Business Affairs and Acquisitions; and by CAA, on behalf of the filmmakers.

SYNOPSIS
W.E. tells the story of two fragile but determined women - Wally Winthrop and Wallis Simpson - separated by more than six decades. In 1998, lonely New Yorker Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) is obsessed with what she perceives as the ultimate love story: King Edward's VIII's abdication of the British throne for the woman he loved, American divorcee Wallis Simpson. But Wally's research, including several visits to the Sotheby's auction of the Windsor Estate, reveals that the couple's life together was not as perfect as she thought. Weaving back and forth in time, W.E. intertwines Wally's journey of discovery in New York with the story of Wallis (Andrea Riseborough) and Edward (James D'Arcy), from the glamorous early days of their romance to the slow unraveling of their lives in the decades that followed.

Madonna's manager Guy Oseary has confirmed plans for the singer to re-enter the recording studio next month to start work on her new album.

The 52-year-old performer is said to know the people she wants to work with on the project, which will serve as the follow-up to 2008's Hard Candy.

MADONNA’s Directorial Feature Debut

Last night, I had the pleasure to attend a screening of W.E. Madonna’s directorial feature debut. The film tells two parallel love stories seperated by almost 6 decades. Most notably the story of American born Wallis Simpson who would later become the Duchess of Windsor after her lover King Edward VIII would step down from his short lived run as Kind of England in order to marry and live out the romance of a century with the woman he loved. Wallis Simpson has been portrayed as one of the most vilified characters in England’s history. However, W.E. tells the story from Wallis’s point of view for the first time.

Madonna, who does not appear in the film, exceeded my expectations with this romantic, tender and intimate story. The cinematography was breathtaking at moments and the casting was fantastic. Still, I had little need for the parallel modern day story of the main character, Wally Winthrop, who finds herself suddenly connected to Wallis and her love story. I felt Madonna’s portrayal of the Duchess was so artfully done that the added modern story line only complicated and mutled a thrilling tale told for the first time.

The music was beautiful although there were blatant references to the Wong Kar Wai formula so beautifully executed in In the Mood for Love.

All said and done, I sat entirely engaged for the entire 2 hour film … so there you have it.

I hope the film does well, she's worked so hard on it for the last 3/4 years. It would be a shame that people hate it just because she's attached to it.

I'm intrigued to find out who she'll work with on the next album. I hope it's not just a 'Hard Candy Vol.II'.

Anyway, great to here Madonna is getting back in the studio. I liked Hard Candy, but it had a tough job to do, following on from Confessions. To me it sounded like Madonna was jumping on the bandwagon of writers and artists that were already flying high in the charts at the time, Kanye, Timbaland, etc. The Madonna I know would never follow trends, she'd try her best to set them. That was the most disappointing thing with Hard Candy....someone said "that sound seems to be selling lots of records, lets go with that".

Lets hope the next record tries to do something new....and if this is going to be her divorce / break-up album, lets hope its as brilliant as her last divorce album Like A Prayer....and if the lady couples it with a remastered version of that album, even better!!

Someone with talent who has been relatively untested, combined with an old favourite (like Ray of Light, William Orbit with Pat Leonard)......as long as she doesn't just grab people who are flavour of the month like she did with Bedtime Stories (Babyface) and Hard Candy (Timbaland, Pharrell, etc).

Well, I may have to eat my hat. The inside word from The Weinstein Company is that Madonna’s effort as a movie director, “W.E.,” is really really good. Gregg Kilday is reporting that the Weinstein Company has bought the rights to Madonna’s movie. Now I’ve called some people I know–not Harvey or Bob–and they’ve told me the story. They bought the movie outright–no one else saw it. Madonna showed it to TWC first probably because Harvey Weinstein released her “Truth or Dare” twenty years ago. And the people who saw “W.E.,” including Harvey and Bob, loved it.

My first question: does it have any reference to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor as Nazi sympathizers? I am told it’s at least mentioned. But this is also what was said: “It’s a smart and thoughtful and incredibly stylish. A performance by Andrea Riseborough that’s Oscar worthy. I don’t know how the f— she [Madonna] did it. It’s an art picture, there’s no question about it. It’s a picture for women. Bob and Harvey really loved it. This is a lot like Tom Ford’s directing of A Single Man. We were impressed with her. Everyone’s been talking about her in house for two weeks. She’s gotten it all up there on the screen. It’s hard to tell a good story. She managed to do it.”

My sources say this is all really true. They even say that they know there will be skepticism, but that once people see “W.E.,” they’ll get it.

I know, this is insane. People who read this column probably think I’ve been abducted by aliens. I can only go by what I’m told, though. And if “W.E.” is really so good, I’ll be the first to say it. The sales price, by the way, is said to be less than $5 million. More likely in the $4 million range

Madonna is set to begin recording a new album in July. Three years after the release of Hard Candy, after designing clothes with her daughter, collaborating with Glee, opening a gym chain and generally making loads and loads of cash, the Material Girl is plotting her 12th full-length album, with touring to follow.

For now, the details are scarce. In December, Madonna wrote on Facebook that she "officially" needed to "make new music". "I need to move," she wrote. "I need to sweat ... I'm on the lookout for the maddest, sickest, most badass people to collaborate with. I'm just saying." Yesterday, her manager made the official even more official: "Madonna goes into the recording studio next month to begin work on new album," Guy Oseary wrote on Twitter. "She has a good idea of which producers she will be working with ... [There are] lots of questions about what kind of music it will be ... stay tuned."

This is welcome news after comments early last year, when Madonna said she didn't have "the time or energy" for her music career. She has instead been busy with parenting, as well as directing her second feature film, a romance called WE. "I don't [even] have a record deal right now," she told Interview magazine. "I don't know how I'm going to get my music out the next time I make a record. I'm going to have to reinvent the wheel."

Madonna's first movie, 2008's Filth and Wisdom, garnere...al reviews. But WE shows signs of being better: this week, the Weinstein Company announc...e the film, bringing it to theatres before the end of 2011. I'd be happy with the first two options, but Pharrell...M's been there and done that...

I'd love to see her go headfirst into dubstep or maybe something of a callback to her first album.

On a semi-related note, it's funny that Justin Timberlake in recent interviews is pretty much talking about how he is done with music....you know.....after helping to bog down albums by both Madonna and Duran Duran! Maybe he realizes he just isn't all that good!

i want a psychedelic, head trippy, mind fucky electro-pop-r&B record that is totally left of center , something in the vein of electric circus, worldwide underground, dark side of the moon, or something by the black keys but with the usual 'dance' spin she puts on things. bring it bitch

Good, buuuuut, for the very first time, I'm worried about the quality/focus of the new/future M album...

after the artistic nadir of Hard Candy, I'm not sure if she has many ideas left...

Ray of Light was her comeback and her first "mature" album, Music her stab at modern (then), early 00's pop/rock music, and the much maligned AL at least gave us an artist who thought could reinvent herself as an electro/singer-songrwriter diva from hell, but after that, hum... a somewhat cynical attempt to re-conquer the dance market (Confessions) and then the bullshit of HC, which at least had clear focus (sellout/shit-hop/shit-dance music)

What's next? Another "mature" reinvention/comeback a la Ray of Light??? Another hardcore dance album (inspired by GaGa)? something more organic/soulful (a la Adele??)? Just a collection of pop/rock/dance songs?

So yes, I'm both excited/worried...

But one thing is for sure,. this new album probably won't reinvent mainstream pop music. Those days are looooooong gone. Right now, I'd be more than happy with a strong 11 songs pop/rock/dance album with a killer single and some high-quality ballads...
