I have a better question; Why did Madonna rip-off THIS track by Malcolm McLaren:

I wonder if that talentless whore pays youtube to have post her mouth opened so wide, or if its just youtube calling her out for what she is.

I never noticed the resemblance until you mention it , although Martika's version sounds more like Vogue than Prince's version, there are some musical similarities I wouldn't say it was a rip off. The subject matter and lyrics couldn't be more apart!

I love the lyrics of Spirit, its one of Prince's most uplifting songs IMO. Love his version's vocals.

I know you'll say it's bc I'm a Madonna fan, but other than being a house track about vogue-ing they aren't very similar.

Well after hearing both songs, you can't argue that Madonna has a gift for strong hooks! Seems like "Spirit" and "Down In the Vogue" actaullly have more in common then "Vogue" with either one.

nod Blessed, she is.

I agree that Martika song is very dull. But from that time many songs had that house-dance sound, it wasn't exclusive to Madonna and Shep Pettibone, there was C&C Music Factory, Narada Michael Walden etc...

That beat definately isn't exclusive. Shep gave it to Janet before he gave it to Madonna for "Vogue".

I've always thought of Shep as a one trick pony.
