Goldie & The Gingerbreads / Isis

My interest was piqued by Mickey Dolenz's post on the group Fanny.
I heard their early albums but being a big Todd Rundgren fan, the TD produced Mother's Pride was the one I really focused on when it came out.

Fanny's PR material kept stating things like they were the first female Rock band signed to a major label so I became curious.
From what I was able to search out, this credit might actually belong to a band called Goldie & The Gingerbreads who were signed to Atlantic records in the 60s by Ahmet Ertegun himself.

...Can't You Hear My Heartbeat

Unfortunately for them, Herman's Hermits released their version of the song in the U.S. a few weeks earlier.

Genya Zelkowitz - vocals
Ginger Bianco - drums
Margo Lewis - organ
Carol MacDonald - guitar

The group broke up somewhere in '67.
Genya Zelkowitz became Genya Ravan and went on to front the 70s Horn-Rock band Ten Wheel Drive.

...Tightrope & Pulse

Carol MacDonald & Ginger Bianco (eventually joined by Margo Lewis) formed an all-female band with horns called Isis.

...Everybody Needs A Forever (from the 1974 debut release Isis)

...Bobbie & Maria (from the 1975 release Ain't No Backin' Up Now)
^This album was produced by legendary New Orleans producer Alan Toussaint.

...Loving You Through Music (from their 1977 final release Breaking Through)
^Dedicated to Laura Nyro.

Over the years, the band's lineup changed quite a bit.
The one constant, guitarist/vocalist Carol MacDonald, passed away in 2007.

To bring the story full circle, Fanny guitarist June Millington makes a guest appearance on the Ain't No Backin' Up Now release.

I don't think Atlantic was considered a major label in the 1960's, just like Motown wasn't even though they had popular acts on it.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Maybe just a question of semantics in terms of PR.

Based on my own purchases during that time period, Atlantic was pretty major.
