I prefer Stevie's version. One of my all-time favorite vocal performances from him. FWIW, I absolutely love Aretha's too.
Stevie has said in interviews that he thinks his version is ok, but he thinks Aretha took it to another level. I'm sure some of that may have to do with the amount of money he made off of it too.
I think it's the MONEY too. Had Aretha not had a hit with it (which is impossible to say because if I had been an A&R at Atlantic back then, I'd say it was a hit too lol), Stevie wouldn't be saying all of that. But he wanted ReeRee to sing it so.

He says the same thing about Luther's "Creepin'" and I vehemently disagree with him on that one. This one is much, much closer, but I'm going with Stevie for the reason Timmy said. His version is just so vulnerable and melancholy, which is the place the song resonates the most for me.

Yep. And love Lutha like a play-cousin but Stevie's original of "Creepin'" was far better. Stevie's TRIPPIN' on that one!

We know Stevie (and almost any songwriter) would be about the money.
I'm sure Holland-Dozier-Holland loves Adam Ant's version of "Where Did Our Love Go" as well as the Naked Eyes remake.
They probably also love Janet's "If" for the same reason.

I think many of the Motown songwriters (and their estates, including Marvin's estate, which includes his three children) love that the covers of the songs get them money lol so of course they'll talk favorably.

Hell Yeah, Dolly LOVES whitney's version.

Man, didn't Dolly use that money she got from Whitney's version to get Dollywood off the ground?!

Aretha owns that song It's an understatement to say that she "took it to another level".That's actually my favorite song by her.
