Readers Poll: The Queen of Pop is Madonna

the image

July 7, 2011

From Rolling Stone:

To say that Madonna won this poll in a landslide would be like saying that she was a kind of popular pop singer in the 1980s. It wouldn't even begin to explain the scope of the situation.

She received five times as many votes as Lady Gaga, who landed in second place by a very comfortable margin.

The only persistent criticism that Gaga has dealt with in recent years is that she's too much like Madonna. It's a hard shadow to escape. Madonna is a musical icon without peer. Her run of hits over the past 30 years is simply astounding, and when she hits the road, tickets sell like it's a Led Zeppelin reunion tour.

Sure, her last few albums didn't match up to the classics. Nobody cares. She's Madonna. Lady Gaga has accomplished more in recent years than any artist of her era, but she's still got a long climb until she reaches Madonna level. It's very likely that no other artist will ever reach it though.

Her manager Guy Oseary recently tweeted that she's started recording her 12th studio album, so clearly she has no intention of slowing down anytime soon.

Nominees in order of most votes received:

Lady Gaga

Brtiney Spears

Tina Turner

Beyonce

Aretha

Katy Perry

Cher

Elton John

Mariah Carey

^ falloff @ Elton John. Damn they just ripped his manhood right from under that skirt.

Madonna kind of old to just now win the readers poll for queen of pop isn't she? I mean that crown is kind of dusty.

I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!
RIP Dick Clark, Whitney Houston, Don Cornelius, Heavy D, and Donna Summer. rose

People have been calling her "Queen of Pop" for years. This isn't shocking.

No , it's a poll which in most cases doesn't qualify as "real news". But you knew that and proceeded to click on the thread anyway.

Basically.

No other female artist has been as successful as Madonna. She's been called the 'Queen of Pop' for like 20 years. People are just reiterating what they know is true. smile

I have a feeling someone is going to come in here and try to dispute this by claiming their flop, has-been fave is the 'Queen of Pop'.

Wait for it...

I agree that Janet should be there and Aretha probably should not but do you really see Tina as a pop artist? Maybe it's because I prefer her earlier work but I never really thought of her as being pop.

Was this poll actually for Queen of Pop? Did they include Elton John to be funny?

100%. As a SOLO artist, Tina fuses rock, r&b, soul, some funk, some dance/electronic - basically, everything from Private Dancer on is POP. It may have the influences of rock n roll and the blues, but it was designed as state-of-the-art POP music for play on POP radio in its time, IMO.

In that case I strongly disagree that Tina Turner should be considered the third "best" female pop artist. She had a fairly brief run as a pop star (basically two albums in the mid '80s) and didn't really manage to have many huge hits. On merit there is no way she makes the top ten list of "best" female pop stars.

2 pop albums in the 80s? So "Foreign Affair" and its hit singles "The Best" and "Steamy Windows" are NOT pop? That's called 'rock' or 'soul' or what is it?

Then even in the 90s and 00s all her new material started incorporating electronic dance music, in fact "Wildest Dreams" has lots of techno fused in there with big choruses, kind of the same trend Madonna had started doing in 1994 with 'Bedtime Story'...I'd say Tina's "Private Dancer" and beyond catalog is pop...yeah, i would. Those are pop producers and pop singles all the way.

Oh, I'm not denying that her work from 1984-present is pop music. My point is that other than Private Dancer and Break Every Rule she hasn't been particularly successful as a pop artist. My argument was that as a huge pop star she had a relatively brief run.

Look at her career circa 1984-present. In that span you also had Madonna, Janet Jackson, Sade, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Sheryl Crow, Shania Twain, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Beyonce, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. All huge stars who have eclipsed Tina as far as being pop stars is concerned. An argument could even be made that people like Cindy Lauper, Paula Abdul and Brandy were bigger and more successful pop stars than Tina Turner. I'm not saying that any or all of the above women are "better" than Tina but if you look at hit singles and/or album sales they all eclipse what she has managed to do. That's why I have a hard time seeing her as being the third "best" female pop star of the last 25 years. Her accomplishments as a pop star simply do not warrant her being in the top ten.

Aretha had some nice runs on the Pop charts during certain periods in her career but I hardly consider her a Pop singer. Same with Tina. She's always been more Soul & Rock than Pop.

I'm just a bit disturbed by the fact lady gaga came in second. neutral

She's hasn't even been on the scene for five years. Are people really this fooled by the hype? I still believe that she's just a fad and her act will become tired if it hasn't already.

Diana Ross hasn't had a top 10 hit (or platinum album) in twenty-six years. She's a legend and all, but a pop queen...no.

you have to currently be on the chart to be the Queen of Pop?

No, you don't have to be CURRENTLY on the charts to be the Queen of Pop...but the last time you were shouldn't be a quarter century ago.

7. Katy Perry
Remember the first time you heard "I Kissed A Girl" in early 2008? Whether you hated it or thought it was brilliant, you probably thought that Katy Perry's career would last about as long as Jill Sobule's – the last artist to land on the charts with a song called "I Kissed A Girl." Katy didn't pull a Sobule though. She just kept releasing shockingly popular hits. Even the haters can't hate on "Teenage Dream." It's just too good. Her second album seems to be a modern-day Thriller, just scoring number one hit after number one hit. She's now on a sold-out arena tour – and has been on the cover of Rolling Stone twice.
