Walters' career began in 1952, when he launched what became known as the Norby Walters Bel-Air nightclub in Brooklyn with his late brother Walter.

"I had Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie -- all the jazz greats -- and I got Miles Davis his first solo gig.

Every time he'd see me, he'd say, 'Norbyyoumotherfuckeryougotmemyfirstgig!!'" says Walters in an effusive rat-a-tat tone that wouldn't sound sweeter if it came out of Parker's storied sax.

Norby the gangsta? Hahahahaha. I did a stint with Norby on an event or two. First time I met him he said in his best Godfather voice "U know, I'm a original soldier - and you know what I mean when I say soldier". I didn't, but I nodded. Of course, then I found out he was connected to the Columbo, Gambino and Genovese families. Argh - I said to myself. A colorful character indeed.
