Lady GaGa Addresses Commercially Unsuccessful Rivals

Lady GaGa Plaque Lady GaGa Addresses Commercially Unsuccessful Rivals

She is one of the only artists who has been able to score high sales figures despite being in the era of ’song leaks’ and illegal downloading.

Now, Lady GaGa has given her thoughts on what she feels is the real reason some artists struggle to shift commendable units.

Check out what she had to say below…

On artists who blame piracy for low sales figures, she says:

“I believe it is whole heartedly the obligation of the artist to create a wonderful album that speaks to that generation through the digital era and through the challenges that we’ve been put up against.”

Going onto reveal:

“People that blame things on piracy and blame things on music being stolen- this is just an excuse. It’s an excuse for artists not creating through all of that.”

Whilst many a fan of ‘insert name commercially unsuccesful artist here’ may be rattled by these comments, Ms. Germanotta does have a valid point.

For she herself is an artist who has faced continous ‘leaks’ and ‘illegal downloading’ yet is still one of the highest selling artists in the world despite debuting just three years ago.

Even embarking on two record breaking tours in the space of two years whilst some of her contemporaries continue to serve as opening acts even after countless albums and support from well meaning fans.

She is just one artist in a long list of performers which include Beyonce, Drake, Adele, Kanye West ,Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears and Chris Brown who have managed to chart with impressive figures even when faced with the tiresome issue of music piracy.

Whilst some fan bases also choose to blame lack of label support for the shortcomings of their favourite artists, it is worth remembering that there is ultimately nothing a label can do if these fans know an artist has an LP out but choose not to buy it.

Perhaps GaGa’s comments will inspire the marketing managers of struggling artists to find new and inventive ways to persuade music lovers to invest in their artists.

For it is becoming increasingly obvious that it is the artists who embrace their fans the most, are the ones that have the most to smile about when the sales figures roll in

She does have a point, artists and bands with a strong connection to fans and consistent output are starting to sell as well as manufactured acts, sometimes even better. however denying that piracy has had an extreme effect on music sales as a whole isn't very smart.

Look at acts like Vampire weekend selling 124,000 in their first week, not far from Katy Perry with 192,000

It's fine for her to gloat and all... But they are kidding themselves or trying to kid us by acting like it's all about the music. Her image, marketing, and massive media hype contributes to her success as much as anything else.... She's the "it" artist right now and there are many people who will buy her albums and singles because she's hot right now and mainstream always seem to gravitate to what's hot ....until it's not. In 10 years she still might be able to gloat....probably not.

While I agree with her about the obligation of making music that resonate with people, I think the piracy issue might not affect her that much given that she has the full support of her label who will push her music out there regardless, but if she was an independent artist who only got herself ALONE to push her music, she would've sang a different tune.

Gaga has pretty loyal fan-base, so even if her album leaks ahead of time (see Born This Way) her fans will still go out and purchase her music. She has a strong connection with her fans...To me, she makes great music...Constantly re-inventing herself every era

The Fame Monster and Born This Way are brilliant, The Fame is the only work by her I'd call OK.

Brilliant is a word that shoud be reserved for albums like What's Goin' On or Songs In The Key Of Life. Not Born This Way or The Fame Monster.

I have listened to her albums, Fame Monster & BTW are pretty good. but nothing brilliant and i have kind of gotten off the GaGa train. I Think she is talented but her piano skills are not amazing like people make them out ot be, and her vocals are good but nothing stealer yes even the BTW accapella. But this is cause i was raised on Diamanda Galas, Nina Hagan, Aretha, Ingeborg Hallstein, Hazel Scott etc.

Women who can belt out almost operatic vocals, and Diamanda & Scott. Especially Diamanda who has operatic vocals and some of the fastest finger i have ever seen on piano, and some of the most soulful/creepy jams. So GaGa to me is nothing special.

And no one get offended by that it's just my opinion. Don't come attacking me telling me how amazing she is, i don't think she is and that's just my feelings hug

I don't know. The albums do sound different. But I'm guessing era is like years or something idk... but I guess in this day and age it could count as an era idk. shrug

I think you're right, but stylistically Born This Way is VERY similar to the Fame. They both have the same Euro-pop basis.

What the hell is 'an album era?'

Why not just say her sound is different with each album?

An era is a period of time, not an aural interpretation.
