I agree.

It has a lot to do with the fact that she's a black female. If she were white then people would view her as "rebellious", not a crackhead.

If Whitney was born a real white female, she'll be Molly Ringwald!

That's an insult to Molly man. lol Least say like that Elizabeth Berkeley chick from Saved By the Bell. lol

You can say that again! If someone is talking about folks that were throwing down, the last name that's going to come to mind is Shitney Houston.

I've waited five days to reply to this thread lol. Why do we have to wait so long? Anywho, I would definitely mention Whitney with 'the big three' as you all call them. Whitney is just as much as an icon as any of them. Every little girl in America wanted to look and sing like Whitney. She was the whole package: a beauty queen and had a fantastic voice. Whitney was the best singer in the world from when she hit the scene in '85 until after her bodyguard tour ended in '94. After that she was still incredible but her voice had suffered due to her extensive touring and her love of new ports. Nobody could touch whitney vocally in her prime..I mean NO ONE. She's less than a million album shipments away from having three DIAMOND albums. That's a feat not pedo pan, prince, or madge is even close to. And this shit talking about "I Will Always Love You" being her only memorable song is laughable. You guys must have her mistaken with Mariah, who doesn't have not one 'memborable' song in her entire catalogue. Oh yeah..in the early 90s she sang "Ain't No Way' better than Aretha.

Ok rant over lol. Whitney is my boo.

Wow, you're preaching up in here. Not only is Whitney both an icon and a legend, rightly so, she has a global reach that can not be denied just as Madonna Prince, and MJ has.

I think some here are in denial or have no clue about Whitney's accomplishements. Not only does she have 2 Diamond certs in the US, she is 1 mil away from her 3rd. The BodyGuard has sold 40mil+copies worldwide. Only MJ has sold more with one cd and that's thriller. One doesn't get to sell that many cds of one album without being a global smash and significant especially being a person of color. All of her cds have achieved platinum or multiplatinum status in the US except the xmas cd which is due a gold cert.

The Bodyguard

First cd by a female to sell 1mil copies +

longest reign at #1 by at female at 20 wks

best selling soundtrack by a female

top 3 of best selling cd by a female period

http://www.billboard.com/...0382.story

Seether Scores Top Billboard 200 Debut, Adele Still No. 1

As expected, Adele's "21" album continues to cling to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 for a ninth non-consecutive week -- just the fourth album since 2000 to spend that long at No. 1. It sold 137,000 last week according to Nielsen SoundScan (down 12%).

In the history of the Billboard 200 chart -- dating back to 1956 -- "21" is only the 12th album by a woman to spend nine weeks or more atop the list. The longest reign for a female album is Whitney Houston's "The Bodyguard" soundtrack, with 20 weeks at No. 1._______________________________________
http://new.music.yahoo.co...art_watch/

Shameless Plug: 21 is only the 16th album by female artist to hit #1 since the pop album chart became a weekly feature in March 1956. (I'm including movie soundtracks and original cast albums on which a woman had star billing.) Whitney Houston leads the pack with three albums that stayed on top for nine or more weeks: her first two studio releases and the soundtrack to The Bodyguard. Julie Andrews is in second place with two. She scored with the My Fair Lady cast album and the Mary Poppins soundtrack

Her last cd, I look to you' did very well for someone 30yrs in the game at 46yrs to sell 1mil cds in the US, platinum and 2.5mil WW with tour revenue gross of ~$40mil bad reviews and all. Someone who isn't relevant can't do that.

Whitney's Nothing But Love tour comes in at #34 on the Top 50 Worldwide tours for 2010 grossing $36.3mil not including her 2 Russian Dates

http://www.pollstarpro.co...tTours.pdf

Current and relevant artists such as Lady Gaga, Jesse J and Katy Perry are not only citing her as inspiration but they are covering her songs in concert and youtube (the latter 2). Whitney is just as bit as influential as the 3 cited. Her method of singing changed the game for pop/r&b singers and it is no accident that her songs are the most covered of any singer male or female on American Idol. Her songs are also covered at Xfactor Uk, Italy, and other foreign country talent shows as well. Her impact on female singers is huge and should not be diminished or played down. Her record of 7 consecutive #1 still stands.

As she continues to get herself together, if she does in fact star in 'Getting to Happy' as is being reported, 'Exhale sequel', i have no doubt that that movie will do well.

People forget that Whitney owned her own production company and everything she has either starred in or produced was a hit. Undeniable!

The Princess Diaries both 1 & 2

The Cheetah Girls & their sequels

Cinderella - becoming the highest rated disney show on tv

all produced by Whitney and in Cinderella's case, starred in.

Her box office history- all 3 of her movies were hits, no flops. The Preacher's Wife gave he a $10mil paycheck making her the highest paid black actress.

Using whitney's worldwide figures (unadjusted) to 2011 dollars via http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/
Bodyguard - 410.9 mil = 2011, $657.24 mil ,WTExhale - 81.4 mil = 2011, $120.13 mil, Preacher's Wife - 60 mil = 2011, $86 mil
Total $863.37 mil.

The bodyguard until recently was in the top 15 grossing movies of all times. Exhale grossed $65mi at the time which is over $110mil for inflation in today's dollars and Preacher's wife was also a hit. You don't sell over 170mil records without being a phenomenon.

Whitney in Feb 2011- she still looks great

http://twitpic.com/3zczxz

People may not like her kind of singing or her music but to deny her place in history or her relevance is sheer and willful ignorance.

Forgot to mention that Whitney's latest cd, 'i look to you

debuted at #1 in the US and 6 other countries including Germany, Canada and #3 in the UK. How's that for relevance! dunno much 46yr Black females with a 30yr career that could do that and sell 2.5mil records WW.

Madonna has sold more but she's put out almost double the cds with not much difference in sales. For Whitney's genre, there are infinitely more singers citing her influence. Whitney's movie career has also been infinitely better acting wise and profit wise than Madonna.

We'll get to see this pair up again when Madonna's W.E that she co-wrote and co-produced but not starred in goes up against Whitney in 'Getting to Happy'.

p.s no diss to Maddy, I quite like many of her songs.

yep still going and to add further:

'I Look to You' debuted at #1 in the US in Sept 2009 with ~305k cds sold first week. She is one of only a handful of artist including Madonna to have had a #1 cd in 3 decades i.e 80s, 90s, 2000s and if she gets one this era, that will put her in an even more elite class.

She is in the top 10 of artists with most Billboard #1 dance hits. She is a club diva and her gays/club fans have supported her.

The Preacher's wife Sndtrk- Best selling gospel cd ever. Kirk Franklin's cd my have tied it now or pass it but it would still be #2

She is one of the few who has been able to chart on multiple formats and do so as a credible artist.. Songs from her 'I Look to You' cd charted at least top 20 on

Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop charts - 2 songs

Billboard Jazz charts

Billboard Dance Charts

Billboard Gospel charts

and then a Hot 100 entry on Billboard Hot 100

Who has that appeal 30yrs into their career. It sure ain't Maddy or Prince. They chart but on limited formats.

This cd in the Uk on the back of one performance, went to #3 and the hit 'Million dollar bill' peaked at #5. the cd is just about platinum in the UK as it is in Canda, Italy and Germany. All of this on very little personal promo. Imagine if she had promoted.

Reading this thread, it's hilarious how some people's disdain obfuscate the facts on Whitney's legacy.

There are so many stats I can spit out re Whitney and I'm just a moderate fan,

The sophomore cd, 'Whitney' was the first cd to debut at #1 by a female. The song, 'Exhale, Shoop, Shoop' still has the record as the longest running #2 on the Hot 100 at 11 weeks.

Whitney was the first female artist to have two diamond albums (as of January 1994, both "Whitney Houston" and "The Bodyguard OST" were over ten times platinum). Whitney is the most covered artist on the TV Show American Idol with over 1.150 of 70.000 auditions being songs of hers during the show`s third season. The song "I Have Nothing" has been performed in the finals 6 times, more than any other song

Whitney Houston still has the highest ranking film debut by a music artist with her 1992 debut in "The Bodyguard", even ahead of Eminem`s debut, "8 Mile", despite "The Bodyguard" having opened & played in far fewer theatres and despite the inflationary factor that would increase Whitney`s lead

Whitney Houston is amongst the highest paid actresses in the world and is reported to have collected $10 million for her role in "The Preacher`s Wife"

The world`s best selling debut album by a female artist is "Whitney Houston" with over 25 million copies sold. (The record was broke in 1999 when ..."Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears was released with 27 million copies sold worldwide) The album also ranks as the number one best selling female album of the 1980s

The first album by a female to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 was 1987`s "Whitney"

"Whitney" (1987) has US sales of over 9 million, UK sales of over 2 million and total worldwide sales of over 19 million copies

Whitney`s version of "The Star Spangled Banner" is the only version to be certified platinum

Whitney holds the record for the highest one week-single sales by a female artist as 632.000 copies of "I Will Always Love You" were sold in the final week of December 1992

"I Will Always Love You" spend an amazing 14 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It remains one of the longest No. 1 singles ever

"I Will Always Love You" is the best-selling single by a female artist and the biggest-selling non-charity single of all-time

Total world sales of "I Will Always Love You" stand at 8 million copies, making it the second biggest selling commercial single in world music history - recently losing it`s title to "Candle In The Wind" (sales now at 30 million copies)

The second biggest selling single by a female artist in the UK is "I Will Always Love You", with UK sales of over 1.56 million copies - this record was recently broken by Cher`s "Believe"

"The Bodyguard OST" sold an amazing one million copies in the final week of 1992 - at the time, it set a record for the most albums sold in a single week. The title was broken in 1998 and again in 1999 but this was due to changes in the way the Billboard 200 was compiled adding extras days sales for Garth Brooks and Backstreet Boys. More recently, 'N Sync, Britney Spears and Eminem have followed in the million-plus league

The largest initial certification of any album in US sales history is "The Bodyguard OST" with 6 million copies sold in it`s first two months on sale

The biggest selling album in the world in the 1990`s is "The Bodyguard OST" and the second biggest selling album ever

Because Whitney was nothing more than a glorified non writing lounge singer who made it big global for only 3 years before she threw her life away.

GTHOHWTM! Whitney, despite what you think has written and produced songs. The entire Preacher's Wife Soundtrack is co-produced by her not just executive produced. She's vocally produced the majority of her cds

and she has co-written songs, she just doesn't choose to concentrate on that. On I Look to you she has co-writer credits on 3 songs:

I got You

Like I Never Left

and another song.

On Exhale Soundtrack- she has co-writing song on her hit with CeCe Winans' count on me'

On the Bodyguard sndtr, she has co-writing credit on 'Queen of the Night'

and a few other songs but of course, you wouldn't know that.

Whitney has been a global force for over 25years and the sucess worldwide of 'I Look to You ' proves you wrong with WW sales of 2.5mil cds song.

Her 'Ultimate collection' greatest hits released in Nov 2007 sold 1.5mil copies with no promo from her, peaking at #3 on the UK charts. Who does that if they are not a global star, this is 24years into her carerr.

She has had 4 cds selling over 1mil copies in the UK, very, very few acts have done that female or not.

I'll just keep posting facts to the misstatements here.

**The BPI doesn't regard TBGuard as a Whitney cd, it's regarded as a soundtrack which is accounted for differently but we all know it's a Whitney cd :The Bodyguard reportedly has sold more than 2.1 million in the UK- so, that would place it in the top 15, giving Whitney four albums in the top 100. Whitney is 1 of 8 women of color on this list and of that list, the only one with 4 cds topping the 1mil+mark with the latest being 2007.

Madonna has the most albums with 8:
Madonna -- Immaculate Collection : 3,565,000
Madonna -- True Blue : 1,980,000
Madonna -- Ray Of Light : 1,710,000
Madonna -- Like A Virgin : 1,640,000
Madonna -- Music : 1,625,000
Madonna -- Confessions On A Dancefloor : 1,345,000
Madonna -- Like A Prayer : 1,270,000
Madonna -- Something To Remember : 1,040,000

Also since this list was made, Adele has moved to 2,068,000 sold with 21

yes,Whitney is still popular.Unfortunately, these days it's for all the wrong reasons confused She went on tour last year but everybody was focusing on how much she ruined her voice with drugs.

Looking at these stats, where you see Madonna and Michael, quite frankly you see Whitney and Janet and to a much lesser extent Prince. It's just that Whitney had a much larger global impact than Janet and her album tended to sell more globally and domestically which speaks to her crossing over more.

Here is one interesting chart fact that suprised me as to where Whitney placed. I think members here will be surprised as well:

3
Whitney Houston
When Whitney Houston arrived on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in 1984 as the featured guest star on Teddy Pendergrass' No. 5 hit "Hold Me," many knew that chart success was in her future. After all, it was in her genes: mother Cissy Houston was a respected gospel/R&B singer (and member of the Sweet Inspirations) and cousin Dionne Warwick had been a staple on the Billboard charts for decades. But no one could have expected just how big Houston would become. The diva not only went on to earn eight No. 1 singles on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, but also landed five No. 1s on R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, including her most recent, 2009's "I Look To You."list divider

11
Prince
Though the Purple One's chart history stretches back to 1978, when he arrived on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs with "Soft and Wet," he continued to reign on into the next four decades with seemingly endless singles and albums. Since 1985 (the start year for this countdown), he's racked up 30 entries on R&B/Hip-Hop Albums -- more than any other artist -- with 19 of them reaching the top 10. Most recently, his last three studio releases all debuted at No. 1: 2006's "3121," 2007's "Planet Earth" and 2009's "Lotus Flow3r/MPLSound/Elixr."

7
Luther Vandross
The silky-voiced singer placed 36 hits on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, including 20 top 10s and six No. 1s, between 1985 and 2007. Sadly, his last two appearances followed his passing in 2005 at age 54. Key to Vandross' staying power was his ability to connect with younger audiences, courtesy of duets with Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey in the '90s and Beyonce in 2004. Before he suffered a debilitating stroke in 2003, he recorded "Dance With My Father," which he co-wrote with pop singer/songwriter Richard Marx. The touching ballad won the 2004 song of the year Grammy Award and Vandross' album of the same name became his first to top the Billboard 200.list divider
6
Usher
Since arriving modestly on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs with the No. 56-peaking "Call Me a Mack" (from the movie "Poetic Justice," starring Janet Jackson) in 1993, and on R&B/Hip-Hop Albums a year later with his self-titled debut set, which peaked at No. 25, Usher has gone on to sell 22.1 million albums, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Among his more recent non-chart-related credits: discovering Justin Bieber and being named one of Glamour's "50 Sexiest Men of 2010." (The mentor may have taught his protege a little too well: Usher placed at No. 38 on the list. Bieber ranked No. 7).list divider
5
Janet Jackson
With a staggering 15 No. 1 singles on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Janet Jackson owns the most toppers on the tally in the past 25 years. Only R. Kelly and Usher, with 11 each, come close to the diva in that span of time. (Even Jackson's superstar older brother Michael trails, with just eight in that span of time.) Between the years of 1985 and 2001, Janet Jackson was an unstoppable force on the charts, landing more top 10s than any other act: 27. Going further, from 1985 through 2004, Jackson amassed 33 consecutive top 40 hits, beginning with the No. 40-peaking "Fast Girls" through the No. 18 hit "I Want You."list divider
4
Mariah Carey
Having celebrated 20 years of conquering Billboard charts in 2010, Carey counts numerous records among her achievements. In addition to 10 No. 1s on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and five on R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, her 18 Hot 100 No. 1s are the most among solo acts (and second only to the Beatles' 20) and "One Sweet Day," with Boyz II Men, remains the chart's longest-reigning No. 1 (16 weeks, 1995-96). With 52.7 million albums sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan, Carey stands as the best-selling R&B album artist (and third overall after Garth Brooks and the Beatles) since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991.list divider
2
Mary J. Blige
The Queen of hip-hop soul was the title bestowed upon Mary J. Blige by Sean "Diddy" Combs who worked her debut album "What's The 411?" as an A&R exec at Uptown Records in 1992. On its way to spending seven weeks at the summit of Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, No. 1 singles "You Remind Me" and "Real Love" set the stage for Blige's illustrious career as one of the genre's most celebrated artists. She has since posted 20 top ten tracks on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, including "Be Without You" which spent a record-setting 15 weeks atop the list, and eight chart-topping albums, the most by a female in R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart history.list divider
1
R. Kelly
R. Kelly crowns our list of the top 25 R&B/hip-hop artists of the past 25 years with good reason. Since January of 1985, he's amassed 35 top 10 hits on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (the most of any act in the time frame) and a total of 84 charting singles. Among those are 11 No. 1s, including "Bump N' Grind" (12 weeks at the top) and "Down Low (Nobody Has To Know)" (seven weeks) with Ronald Isley. Further cementing Kelly's hitmaker status is his staggering 11 No. 1s on R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The R&B icon continued to post new chart achievements in 2010, as he notched his 56th top 40 single with "When a Woman Loves."

In honor of the incomparable artists that have helped bring urban music to the masses over the last three decades -- and also to toast the success of our recently launched music column The Juice -- the Billboard chart team has assembled this list of the Top 50 R&B/Hip-Hop artists of the last 25 years.

The tally is based on actual performance on the weekly Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts from Jan. 5, 1985, issue to the charts dated Nov. 6, 2010*. Artists are ranked based on an inverse point system (which just means that who ever spent the most weeks at No. 1 earned greater value than those that spent most time at the lower end of the chart).

Our list includes recent chart-toppers as well as classic favorites, platinum-selling crossover divas and quiet-storm crooners, innovators you'd expect to see and some surprising inclusions you never saw coming. But each artist is an essential voice in a genre that has become the driving force in today's popular music.

Now dissect the list, tear it apart, put it back together, and share your thoughts in the comments area below.

*Prior to the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart implementation in December 1992 of monitored radio airplay by Nielsen BDS and the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums incorporation of point-of-purchase sales data from Nielsen SoundScan, titles on those lists had shorter reigns at No. 1 and shorter chart lives. To ensure equitable representation from all 25 years, earlier time frames were each weighted to account for the difference between turnover rates from those years and the turnover rates that have occurred since the advent of Nielsen Music data.

Its a mighty list.

But it doesn't take away from the fact that no one puts her in the leagues we were speaking about. Have the whole world been duped??

Until Whitney, and Barbara and Celine start winning similar awards for songwriting, they are nothing more than a good voice. They may as well have come out of American Idol. Institutions rather than musical legends.

When Whitney holds a grammy in her crack stained fingers for a self penned comeback album, then the world might listen to the argument.

Oh don't give me that elitist bullshit! A songwriter is great to add to a list of one's accomplishments tbut that doesn't make it the be it, end all of what determines a legend. Let's not go with the 'crack stained' garbarge because everyone of the artist we are talking about did something in their life that was looked at with disdain whether it is Madonna exposing her twat and body for shameless shock jock, hooking up with multiple dudes, some would call her a skank and admiting to coke and drug use as well or Michael and all his accusations ( I won't go into that), Prince eccentricities and weirdness, let's not go there.

Does anyone think that an actor isn't great i.e Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Helen Mirren, etc are not great actors because they don't write the screenplay or script! Of course not!

Does anyone not think Ella Fitzgerald, gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, Barbra Streisand, and the like are not great singers/legends because songwriting was not their forte. Eff that so GTFOH with that mess!

The receipts have been provided above from whenc you have no where to go hence the insults. Whitney is a legend and an Icon indeed on the same level as those mentioned and mentioned by others. Prince .Org haters doesn't determine that. One doesn't produce the stats mentioned above without having made a global impact and what makes it even more revolutionary, extraordinary is that she was 1. a woman and 2. a woman of color

You will deal! and have been dealt a bag of receipts!

You are missing point.

The thread asked why people don't mention Whitney when they mention Madonna, Prince and MJ.

The reason is, she is simply not held in high regard. Its nothing to do with sales, otherwise Prince would be a lot further down any list.

You are waving receipts like you have proved something. It doesn't prove anything because to the vast majority to not put her in the same league. She is just a singer, when there are some artist who do a whole lot more.

And you are even trying the "color" card to defend the crack whore! lol
