Whitney's birthday will be coming up on Tuesday, Aug 9th, 2011. She will be 48yrs old.

also next year will be the 25th anniversary of her sophomore cd, 'Whitney'. I wonder if Arista is planning to do something special as they did for 'Whitney Houston' last year with the Deluxe Anniversary re-issue.

http://www.youtube.com/wa...4jGzNm2yPI

Here is the rare performance of her singing the Dreamgirls song, 'I am changing' which was finally released with the Anniversary Box Set

It also has her debut tv performance of 'Home' featured on the Merve Griffin Show

confused no no no! No one can touch Jennifer Holiday's original version of this song. And her chops are as good as they ever were--sending a chill down your spine! Here is Jennifer in N'Orleans last year:

The track was very good for the dance charts and Whitney still could NOT dance worth a damn! lol THIS alone is why she was NOT worthy to be in the same sentence as Michael, Prince, or Madonna.

Well, I've tried to answer your question in reply #231:

No one with a clear mind will deny Whitney's massive commercial success in the late 80s and early to mid 90s.

However, just like some other figures in popular music (Celine Dion comes to mind), I think she has failed to leave a lasting iconic impression within pop culture. The reason is simple: she is too watered down and too much everyone's darling and just lackes edge. I would argue that Tina Turner is the much more impressive figure if we want to discuss soul divas. Whitney's sterile act - no drugs, no sex, no rock'n'roll - is just too boring to make her iconic imo. She is like a solo R'n'B version of The Corrs. biggrin

Let's take her version of "I will always love" you as an example. This is a good song and a good cover version, for sure! Her vocal delivery is perfect! But - and that is the problem imo - it is also something you can play at your Grandma's place without her starting to complain. Try that with "Head" from Prince... biggrin While MJ will be remembered for "Thriller" and "Billie Jean", Madonna (who I don't like too much btw) for "Like a virgin" and Prince for "When doves cry" and "Kiss", she will be remembered for an adult contemporary "everyone likes me" version of an old country diva's song. That's the problem I have with her in a nutshell.

And please don't ask for this thread to be locked - we need to get Vainandy on a roll! evillol

I'm guessing this has been said by now (I haven't read this thread), but it's because while Whitney sold lots of records, she's had little to no influence on popular culture.

I feel that this is a great song for thos who have self-hate and are genuinely unhappy with their lifes;

Whitney: The Greatest Love of All- Arista 10th Anniversary

and in HI-Fi

Amazing influence on culture. I remember her song being used in graduations across the country and kids singing to it as their graduation them song. Truly a song of self-love and empowerment.

CHILLS!!!!! As often with Whitney, her live performances are usually better than the studio recordings as was in this case. Another standing ovation!

That was a George Benson song and it was already a very popular song before she recorded it and ruined it.

I never could get into Geroge Benson's recording of this song as i found it boring but to each his own. This song is now another one of Whitney's signature song that she performs at all ofher concerts. she has said that it is her favorite song of all that she has recorded. She has song this song so many times and never sung the same way twice which is another signature of hers.

She adds alot of emotion, trills and takes the listener on a roller coaster ride that after hearing, you ought to feel better about yourself.

Greatest Love Of All- Whitney: Concert for a New South Africa 1994

Nelson Mandela Concert

Whitney singing for Muhmmed Ali 1992

Whitney performing at her concert in Brunei 1996 at the request of the Royal Family

her live performance trumps all the other singers recorded or live performances even Aretha's version. She is the definitive singer of this song. Sorry!

Wrong! This is your opinion only, not a fact written in stone. Sorry! In fact, your facts reveal how many covers of other people's songs she has done. hmmm That reminds me of a certain biological organism that thrives off the work of others...

parasite (pr-st) An organism that lives on or in a different kind of organism (the host) from which it gets some or all of its nourishment. Parasites are generally harmful to their hosts, although the damage they do ranges widely from minor inconvenience to debilitating or fatal disease. A parasite that lives or feeds on the outer surface of the host's body, such as a louse, tick, or leech, is called an ectoparasite. Ectoparasites do not usually cause disease themselves although they are frequently a vector of disease, as in the case of ticks, which can transmit the organisms that cause such diseases as Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease.

And as for "The Greatest Love Of All", people were playing that song at functions years before Shitney even recorded her first record. Every year when they would have the telethons on TV, somebody would end up singing that song before the telethon was over. And after Shitney recorded it, they just continued on business as usual like they had before she recorded it. They use that song because of it's lyrics, not because she sang it. And a lot of the times, it's just an unknown band playing the song as people walk onto or exit the stage.

What are you talking about? you're so sad trolling around in threads of someone that you obviously don't like.

Who said that her version of the song was used for the movie? Nobody said that. The performance of her singing the song to Muhammed Ali was because she was chosen to tribute him at that setting. She has also been to other Muhammed Ali events later on and has a relationship with him.

There is a reason why they chose her to tribute him! Sigh!

Yes, it's my opinion which is I think her cover of 'greatest love of all' is the definiitve version that tops the original. I don't care what your opinon is. You can move on now, shouldn't matter what my opinon is.

and if that were true, they could have had john q public come and sing to honor the champ but they didn't and that is the fact, they had whitney elizabeth houston!
