The Blackbyrds Hello, Just recently,I've been listening to some music by The Blackbyrds."Walking In Ryhthm","Rock Creek Park","Mysterious Vibes"and lots more ,is just timeless.The band is so underrated.Did anyone here had a chance to see them live in the seventies.I have a cd with one of their songs on it and the author said that they were much better live.Donald Byrd assembled a great group.Ain't no telling what they would sound like if they stayed together a little longer,especially when the sun stood still in the eighties.I was little kid growing up in the seventies and I don't think the group did much television appearances,except"Soul Train",and American Bandstand".Does anyone else here have any memories of seeing them on tv playing live?Please share some of your memories! | |

1975's 'City Life' is their best album
The Blackbyrds -- a jazz-funk outfit formed in a university class taught by jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd, who produced the albums and wrote most of the tunes -- were more of an Earth, Wind & Fire-style horn band than a purist jazz crew, but few groups were better in their chosen style, and 1975's City Life is probably their best album. It's certainly their most successful, including the pop hit "Happy Music" and what has become their signature tune, a percolating Latin-flavored jam called "Rock Creek Park" that's one of the pinnacles of '70s jazz-funk. As on the bouncy title track, the lyrical content is minimal, a simple hypnotic chant, but the fluid interplay of the musicians, who are masters of the unison horn section and the polyrhythmic groove, is what's important about this music. Other highlights include the funky southern-style soul of "Hash and Eggs" and the lyrical ballad "Love So Fine." This is often-sublime stuff ripe for rediscovery by fans of '70s funk, soul, and fusion. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

This is so damn funky and jazzy at the same time it makes me wanna SCREAM! It's unbelievable.
Like I stated earlier I'm still discovering this band - I only remember "Rock Creek Park" and "Walking In Rhythm" from back in the day - so there could possibly be some gems a lot better than this. | |

it's one of the highlights of their 1977 'Action' album.From that same album,be sure to check out the instrumental "Something Special".Their music is so smooth and mesmerizing,you can chillout and get lost in these grooves.No memories of seeing and hearing this band in concert?I'm sure someone here has seen them.Please share. | |

A buddy saw them on a reunion-show, some years back. What i remember him telling was that they performed an excellent jam of that Mysterious Vibes-remix
