It's time for a new Queen of Pop.

Someone who hasn't peaked during a time period wherein the car was invented and someone who has actual vocal talent.

We are not just art for Michaelangelo to carve.

ehhh, sorry, but no. Her two solo albums are masterpieces, yes, but EMI blew it with a pathetic/cheap promotional campaing...on top of that, GaGa has STOLEN her stage antics...

sorry, Roisin had her chance but, sadly, she lost the train, the third album is currently in development hell. If she stills wants to be a star, she should move to the US...

2 pop albums in the 80s? So "Foreign Affair" and its hit singles "The Best" and "Steamy Windows" are NOT pop? That's called 'rock' or 'soul' or what is it?

Then even in the 90s and 00s all her new material started incorporating electronic dance music, in fact "Wildest Dreams" has lots of techno fused in there with big choruses, kind of the same trend Madonna had started doing in 1994 with 'Bedtime Story'...I'd say Tina's "Private Dancer" and beyond catalog is pop...yeah, i would. Those are pop producers and pop singles all the way.

Oh, I'm not denying that her work from 1984-present is pop music. My point is that other than Private Dancer and Break Every Rule she hasn't been particularly successful as a pop artist. My argument was that as a huge pop star she had a relatively brief run.

Look at her career circa 1984-present. In that span you also had Madonna, Janet Jackson, Sade, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Sheryl Crow, Shania Twain, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Beyonce, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. All huge stars who have eclipsed Tina as far as being pop stars is concerned. An argument could even be made that people like Cindy Lauper, Paula Abdul and Brandy were bigger and more successful pop stars than Tina Turner. I'm not saying that any or all of the above women are "better" than Tina but if you look at hit singles and/or album sales they all eclipse what she has managed to do. That's why I have a hard time seeing her as being the third "best" female pop star of the last 25 years. Her accomplishments as a pop star simply do not warrant her being in the top ten.

Ouch. And i disagree that Sheryl, Shania, Christina, Pink, Katy Perry or Sade have eclipsed Tina Turner as pop stars.

Sade, Sheryl and Shania haven't necessarily had a ton of huge hits on the pop charts but they did sell a ton of albums. On her first album alone Christina managed to have more big pop hits than Tina. The same can be said for Katy and her most recent album. Pink may be the most similar to Tina as far as hit singles and album sales but I think she has a slight edge due to longevity (as a pop star, obviously Tina had a much longer career overall).

As I said previously I am not saying that any or all of those women are "better" than Tina but as pop stars I think they are probably all bigger successes than Tina was. You could probably make a good case that she is on equal footing with a few of them but I tried to use hard facts (hit singles/album sales) as a barometer. Leaving artistic considerations aside I think it's very hard to make an argument that Tina is one of the biggest pop stars of the last 25-30 years.

She's hasn't even been on the scene for five years. Are people really this fooled by the hype? I still believe that she's just a fad and her act will become tired if it hasn't already.

Lady gaga is number 2, the same reason madonna is number 1. Lady gaga is a madonna duplicate. And people LOOOOOVE GIMMICKS.

Touring is a bigger measure to me. IF someone will go spend $35-$200 to spend the evening seeing your show...Tina was the first megamegamegastar on the touring circuit. 'sorry'

Fair point, I didn't really consider touring. However, I must confess I'm not entirely sure what "megamegamegastar" means. I would guess that people like Barbara Streisand and Barry Manilow were huge touring attractions that could demand premium ticket prices before Tina Turner.

Tina Turner (born Anna Mae Bullock; November 26, 1939) is an American singer and actress whose career has spanned more than 50 years. She has won numerous awards and her achievements in the rock music genre have earned her the title The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll.[1][2][3] Turner started out her music career with husband Ike Turner as a member of theIke & Tina Turner Revue.[4] Success followed with a string of hits including "River Deep, Mountain High" and the 1971 hit "Proud Mary". With the publication of her autobiography I, Tina(1986), Turner revealed severe instances of spousal abuse against her by Ike Turner prior to their 1976 split and subsequent 1978 divorce. After virtually disappearing from the music scene for several years following her divorce from Ike Turner, she rebuilt her career, launching a string of hits beginning in 1983 with the single "Let's Stay Together" and the 1984 release of her fifth solo album Private Dancer.

Her musical career led to film roles, beginning with a prominent role as The Acid Queen in the 1975 film Tommy, and an appearance in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. She starred opposite Mel Gibson as Aunty Entity in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome for which she received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture, and her version of the film's theme, "We Don't Need Another Hero", was a hit single. She appeared in the 1993 filmLast Action Hero.

One of the world's most popular entertainers, Turner has been called the most successful female rock artist[5] and was named "one of the greatest singers of all time" by Rolling Stone.[6] Her combined album and single sales total approximately 180 million copies worldwide.[7][8] She has sold more concert tickets than any other solo music performer in history.[9][10] She is known for her energetic stage presence,[2] powerful vocals, career longevity,[9] and widespread appeal.[11] In 2008, Turner left semi-retirement to embark on herTina!: 50th Anniversary Tour.[12][13] Turner's tour became one of the highest selling ticketed shows of 2008-2009.[8] Turner was born a Baptist, but converted to Buddhism and credits the spiritual chants with giving her the strength that she needed to get through the rough times.[14]

Huh, I'm not saying that she hasn't sold more concert tickets than any other solo music performer in history but I am extremely skeptical. You seem to be a pretty big fan, how many tours has she done? I know that from the '50s-'70s she toured constantly with Ike but would those ticket sales count? She wasn't exactly a solo act at that time. I did read the linked sources but they were just articles claiming that she sold more concert tickets than anyone else, they weren't very detailed and did not seem very credible to me.

I would guess that people like James Brown and Bob Dylan must have sold more tickets than Tina. Hasn't she gone long stretches of her career without touring? Brown and Dylan have toured fairly steadily throughout their careers (well, James isn't doing too much touring these days).

I'm not anti Tina, far from it, but I do have trouble believing that particular statement (that she sold more tickets than any other solo music performer in history). As a big Tina fan I'm asking you to help me wrap my head around that claim. When exactly did she split from Ike? '75, '76

ish? I'm guessing that she did big world wide tours for her three solo albums from the '80s but what about the '90s? I know that there was a bit of a retirement and then she had a big comeback in the late '90s maybe? And then she did another tour a few years ago. So would it be accurate to say that she did five large scale world tours? I know that she was doing live performances in the late '70s/early '80s but it's probably fair to say that they were a bit more sporadic and on a smaller scale. If that is all accurate, and if it's not please correct me, I find the claim in question extremely hard to believe.

Somebody, anybody, please pipe up and say that you find it surprising to learn that Tina Turner is the solo act that has sold the most concert tickets. I can't be the only one that finds that very surprising!

why is it so surprising? she still holds some record for performing in Brazil for over 180,000 in the audience.

She did tour after every studio album from Private Dancer on - and America is the only place she is an arena act. In the rest of the world she is a stadium act. Since PD, she's not exactly been playing theatres...the Break Every Rule tour and her millennium/2000 'farewell' tours were especially huge...

Because she's not someone that is out there on the road constantly. I suppose if she is playing stadiums that makes a big difference but I still have my doubts. Do you have any idea who is just below her? Is there a top ten list anywhere?

Madonna had enough talent to sell over 300 million records, the most of any female recording artist - ever....to produce more top 10 hits than any other artist in history (male or female)...to be credited by both Guinness and Billboard as the 'Most Successful Female Recording Artist of All Time'...to have had two different world tours gross enough money to become most grossing concert tour for a solo artist in history....to wind up in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame....and to become the richest woman in the music business.

...and in addition to all that, she apparently had enough talent to convince Rolling Stone readers to choose her name as 'Queen of Pop' over some other chick. razz lol cool

Discussion over.

Queen of Pop = Madonna.

Madonna was the shit in the 80's for sure, but i dont know that she has the talent to label her queen of pop..

If we go by talent my vote is for Christina Aguilera.. Hands down that girl can SING!

EXACTLY!!!!!

QUEEN OF POP is not a technical talent / singing talent contest. That would be called 'American Idol.'

And if XXXtina is the queen of popular music Im a fucking Royal Brit.rolleyes

I'll leave it alone babe...just be me
