Mtume- Juicy Fruit

This song has been on heavy rotation in my stereo lately. I absolutely adore how silky and slinky it is. The groove just curls in this song! It has been my respite from being sick and having to move lately.

Anyone else love this song?

Also, does anyone have any suggestions of Mtume albums to buy?

Love it. Classic synth funk. I might like Biggie's version even better though.

Makes my body rock, keeps me sizzling
Do what you want,I don't care
I'll be your lollipop, you can lick me everywhere" smile

I only have two albums by Mtume,1983's 'Juicy Fruit' album, and the follow-up,1984's 'You,Me And He' album. Both of these albums are GREAT,here's a short review...

***'Juicy Fruit'(1983)---Of course, the highlight of this album is the sexy, slinky title track. But the opening track "Green Light" is fast and funky, and the second single "Would You Like To (Fool Around)" is no slouch either.

***'You,Me And He'(1984)---This album opens with the intoxicating midtempo jam "C.O.D. (I'll Deliver)" which sounds like "Juicy Fruit Part Two".That's okay, because it's a kickass song that sizzles nonetheless. And then there is the title track,a wonderful R&B ballad about a woman dealing with her love for two men.

As far as I know,Mtume did one other album (1986's 'Theatre Of The Mind' featuring the hit "Breathless") before the lead singer went solo and the group disbanded. All three albums are available on CD.

His version? I think you mean when he "sampled" it, right? Nah...this time it follows the age old adage of the "original is the best"! He only sampled it. He didn't remake anything.

Do you guys remember the video for this song? It featured a man and woman dancing to the song, intercut with scenes of Mtume singing the song in a studio. It also shows the woman eating a piece of fruit (an orange?),I guess that's their way of being subtle? wink

Biggie's Version? The rhymes was cool, but no...

Mtume's version is cooler because of the synth, and vocals!!! And It Beats ALOT more.

I remember hearing the "candy kisses" version on AM radio stations back in the day.Apparently, some DJs felt the original version was too explicit.Notice how,on the album and 12" versions, they REALLY emphasize the lyric "You can lick me everywhere" by stopping the music when they say it...lol...and you can even hear "slurping" sounds in the background!
