Jazz-Funk Appreciation

Just wondering if there's any appreciation for this underappreciated fusion genre on the forum. I've been looking into some funk lately and reading the Funk Bible: Funk: The Music, The People, and the Rhythm of the One. The jazz-funk section caught my eye and I begin to search around a bit...listen abit...buy a few albums...

And I've discovered that this little known genre is underappreciated and is in desperate need of recognition!

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

It used to be very appreciated here.

Probably has to do with folks that were into it no longer posting.

With this particular genre you'll generally get great grooves combined with excellent musicianship.

One of the best examples imo are the Herbie Hancock Headhunter releases.

...Sly

...Spank-A-Lee (LIVE)

(Unfortunately, the studio version isn't on YouTube)

I just listened to "Gentle Thoughts" and it was awesome! I'm ashamed to admit that I only know one song from Herbie - I can't remember the title. It is from the '80s and there was a lot of "cuttin' and scratchin' " in it.

That song would probably make you feel the same way Stevie's "I Just Called To Say I Love You" makes me feel lol

Imaginative

For really funky Hancock, it all starts here with the Octet:

Nice pull on the Ramsey Lewis project.
And as for Mr. Miller, yes we can go up and down that street all day long!

Two takes on...
