Junie was a genius! The fact that he was all over the place was what made him sound unique. A hit does not = good music, just popularity. His 70's solo output was abstract funk for sure and not for everyone, but he did what he wanted. The hits came through his stnts with Op and P-Funk. The nastiest OP stuff is from their Junie era. "Ecstacy" and "Pain" being the examples of this. He made P-Funk hit when they started slipping. Yeah he needs his own Unsung episode!

I am THRILLED someone finally put out a documentary about my FAVORITE group of all time.

The Ohio Players were and still are unmatched. Their funky style, lyrics and blatant sexy covers are clearly the platform to why many of us are on this Prince site right now.

Sugar IS THE MAN! Each member of the group formed a great collective that can't be match but seriously..... Sugar IS The Ohio Players. worship When I see them come to town, I need his voice that's it!!

I'm so glad he is doing well after 2 strokes. God Bless! He speaks wonderfully and that voice... Whew..that's the aphrodisiac for a romantic evening. :kisses:

ThankUPrince!

Yeah, when my dude told me, I was floored. He is actually one of the dudes on the Unsung special. He told me over lunch when he was in Dayton. Hell Diamond wanted to get paid too, but when they told him we already got Sugar and Marshall, I guess he came aboard.

Well hell I might as well let the cat out of the bag. Scott Brown, who was on the Unsung special, and is a professor at UCLA, is doing a book on the Dayton funk. The book is in the final stages. He is coming back to Dayton soon to finish it. He is bring a photographer from Japan to take pictures. When talking specifically about the Players, I asked why they fizzled. He basically said they same gangster, pimp persona that made them was the same thing that took them out. Made sense. I asked him based on his research, why did the Dayton scene just die. Simply put there wasnt a Berry Gordy or a Dick Griffey to run the scene. The mob was running these Dayton groups. Groups getting paid with drugs, cash, hoes and cars and not paying attention to the paperwork.

It's amazing. They were on top of the world. The hits quickly dried up before 1980. I

actually got my mom to buy me their last album with top ten hits on it Angel while

i was still in elementary school. What does everyone think about Zapp Troutman's comment

at the end about EWF copping the Ohio Players style. I definitely disagree with

that one. I think Maurice had his own vision of what he wanted EWF to sound like and

look like. Maurice always stated that he wanted blacks to be aware of African heritage

through their music and it showed with the sound and album covers which was definitely

different from what the Ohio Players were doing. I think Zapp was just being a Dayton

homer with that comment. biggrin

It's only what 4 black bands in the Rock hall. P-Funk, EWF, Isleys and Sly/Family Stone. You can count James Brown, but I don't think any of his sidemen were inducted (except with P-Funk, lol)

Yes. Even if you include the vocal groups, it's just a few more like the norm Dells, Tempts, Tops, J5 and O'Jays.

Yeah I noticed that bogus comment he made too. I was like "wow" did he just say that bullshit just now? EWF DEFINITELY was not trying to be OHIO PLAYERS....EWF has always and always will have their own style. When I hear EWF I'm not even reminded of the Ohio Players. They both totally different funk groups in their own right. I think ole Lester was feeling himself because he was asked to be interviewed.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I don't think that is what he meant by his comments. I thought he meant that EWF was copying the OHIO Players in the sense that they wanted 2 be an extremely TIGHT live band and was inspired by the live aspects of the OHIO Players.

Man, EWF was/is as distinctive in their sound as OP and all the other bands from that era was, and being that he was there you would think Lester would know better than 2 trip like that. But I guess that goes 2 show how just how many egos there are in funk so go figure..... lol
