Gene Chandler covers James Brown's "There Was a Time"

I just heard this for the first time on The Story of Brunswick. The liner notes mention that "no singers covered James Brown songs" which isn't strictly true but I think Gene was pretty brave to cover this particular song.

Any other examples of artists covering James, particularly during his harder funk years?

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Gene never did any funk songs besides the cover anyways, did he?

I don't know if they'd be called "funk" he had a few uptempo joints though.

Huh, how have I been on the planet for thirty years without having heard Aretha tackle James?

It's not exactly the most faithful cover song, is it?
