Is anybody else troubled by this? And what P-Funk albums do you recommend if I don't want to hear any misogyny?

Parliament/Funkadelic is not for everyone, particularly not those easily offended. I'm not troubled by their lyrics, though would recommend that P-Funk is probably not for you. Generally speaking, they're a fairly raunchy ensemble.

Anyhoo, this was recorded before the PC era just like Richard Pryor's albums. That should be taken into consideration.

Also unlike a lot of today's music, it's not like that's what came out of their mouths on every other song.

I think the main problem with the usage of various non-PC words is the tendency to overuse by those with limited vocabulary and limited creativity.

WTF?

So we here now IS PC?!!! Hardly.

No pass (or consideration) for when it was recorded . . . . . . .

Tupac, Biggie, Eminem etc are all so focused on being PC these days . . . . Well, Tupac and Biggie aren't so concerned I guess these days, but when they were recording, I don't recall them opting for PC expressions . . . .

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Exactly. It was a different time obviously. People could say ANYTHING then. Now you're being put under a microscope if you even say anything similar to what the bruhs at Funkadelic were saying then.

Timmy!

C'mon.

People can and do say anything now!

You are not put under a microscope for saying anything similar to Funkadelic.

Nikki Minaj is mysogynist on Pink Friday and not a word heard . . . .

um, the PC era? how is it a PC era when so many songs overuse non-PC words, to use your phrase?

What makes this the PC era is that the usage of certain terms is commented on far more frequently than in the past, and the fact that the overuse of those terms is condemned in certain circles.

Just as there are so many artists guilty of this overuse, there's also a much larger backlash than in previous eras.

Pryor used the n-word frequently and not much was said about it at the time until he himself retired the word from his act after visiting Africa. Since then there has been a growing consensus against it's usage even though some artists still insist on using it. The attitude toward certain words has changed in the PC era even if some didn't get the memo. lol

Where the backlash against rappers using the n-word? Where's the backlash/boycott against Tarantino's fondness for overuse of the n-word? When has Eminem been boycotted for his mysogyny? His homophobia didn't stop 'Stan' from being a hit.

He also committed domestic violence under a character in "Bob George".

So who's zooming who here?

And my favorite artist did an S&M track and was all "bitch are you cumming?!" So if you're gonna get upset at anyone being misogyny, might as well name every male artist that ever recorded in tthe history of recorded music back to the blues era. evillol

Are YOU going to name every male artist that ever recorded as misogynist?

I don't think they are.

It seems to be a weak argument that because it's everyone, it must be alreadly acceptable.

I don't think every male artist is misogynist.

There are women who are misogynistic also.

Not saying George is right, but at the same time I try not take some of his stuff too seriously.

Yeah like for example I don't see no tightwad getting upset over George having a song called "Jimmy's Got a Little Bit of Bitch In Him" dedicated to a gay member of Funkadelic's crew. wink

Must we be upset over any and every? No.

The poster may not have been offended by homophobic or gay bashing lyrics as misogynistic lyrics.

Um, how is it a party if I'm offended?

Keep in mind that I enjoy the hell out P-Funk generally. Their best combines humor, dance, and a serious side. Right now I'm listening to Funkentelechy:

"When you're taking every kind of pill (deprogram, program)

Nothing seems to ever cure your ill"

"Funk is a non-profit organization!"

Great stuff!

How do you even get offended by that? Seriously?

Look, it's the equivalent of someone saying you're a 'bad bitch'. It's actually a compliment and not an insult.

If you're that easily offended, you probably should just stay away from p-funk along with a whole lot of other stuff because you're gonna stay constantly pissed off. lol

Being called a 'bad bitch' can be offensive to the recipient even if it is meant as a compliment.

If you consider it a compliment, does that bar someone from being offended?

If you're that clueless maybe you should stay away from women.

Why bring up the fact that Prince has misogynistic material?

Being Prince fans, most of us would know that already.

It seemed to imply that if we were Prince fans we've been exposed to misogyny and excused it or at least found it acceptable.

I will direct you to the PMRC just like I did baroque. To suggest that "no one complains about the misogyny in hair metal, heavy metal and even rock" is to be ignorant of the recent past. The reason that albums with naughty language come with warning labels is a direct result of people complaining about the lyrics in "white" rock music.

The reason that the media are focusing their attention on "black" music these days is because it is by a wide margin the most popular music.

While I love Funkadelic, I find the misogyny in some of the lyrics to be a problem. I bought Standing on the Verge of Getting It On yesterday and was surprised to hear:

"A luscious bitch she is, true

But it's not nice to fool mother nature
The proud mother of god like all ho's
Is jealous of her own shadow"

I really don't need to hear "bitch" and "ho" in the first 15 seconds of my album. And of course there's "No Head No Backstage Pass" from Let's Take It to the Stage. Even The Mothership Connection has "Handcuffs":

"If I have to keep you barefoot and pregnant

Oh, to keep you here in my world

(Lay down, girl) lay down and take off-a your shoes

Cause I'm a-gonna do to you

What it is I got to do"

Is anybody else troubled by this? And what P-Funk albums do you recommend if I don't want to hear any misogyny?

You need to get a grip on reality and take this P.C. crap somewhere else. These guys were grown ass men who grow up in a different time from today. Enjoy the music and realize they were high out of their minds went they wrote most of the lyrics.
