Midnight Star live, I saw them a week ago I saw Midnight Star in concert last Friday, and was it a great show, yes indeed. They still have the same fire, energy and polish that they had in the Eighties, perhaps they are even better. They did all their big hits and crowd faves like: "Operator", "Headlines", "Wet My Whistle", "Midas Touch", "FreakAZoid", "Curious" and devastated the crowd with "No Parking On The Dance Floor" and the ballad of all-time, "Slow Jam". Three fourths into the show they did a medley of tunes they liked from yesteryear, and featured Belinda Lispcomb (complete with huge Afro wig) doing "Love Hangover", "Got To Be Real" and "Don't Ask My Neighbors", they then did songs they wrote or produced on other acts: "Meeting In The Ladies Room" (Klymaxx); "Love Shoulda Brought You Home" (Toni Braxton); "I Wanna Be Rich" (The Calloways) and "Rock Steady" (The Whispers). The show had some opening acts, most noticeably a young male r&b singer called, Zay, and he did his debut song called "Slow Song", which features Midnight Star member Bo Watson on vocals and Isley Brothers band guitar player Reggie Griffin on it. The young man was quite good and really put on a show with his dancers. Before Zay, a jazz group from Cleveland called Note Plus Sounds peformed and they were really good also. The amazing thing is that this show was free and sponsored by a church in Indianapolis. Midnight Star performs in Woodstock, Ga (near Atlanta) on July 9th; Lexington, KY on July 19th; Las Vegas, NV on July 23rd; Memphis, TN on August 6th; and Cleveland, OH on August 27th. Word from some of their crew is they are working on a new album, their first in nine years. Music Royalty in Motion

I just hope Midnight Star never forsaked their synths like Prince did.
Oops, did I say THAT?!?^

Their earlier records were regular R&B more like like Jeffrey Osborne, not electrofunk. They changed their sound because they toured with Zapp and they (Zapp) stole the show. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Jeffery never jammed as hard as Midnight Star did in the early goings. They even funk out with a flute!

I saw them a few years ago and it was one of the best shows I ever went to.One jam after another.Everybody was on their feet throughout the entire performance...dancing and singing along.Their songs have really stood the test of time.Songs like "No Parking On The Dance Floor" and "Operator" still pack a punch.I wish they would return to the Bay Area again.

I'm so happy that they are still out there "doin it"......and as per R&bA's (and others' reviews)...the RIGHT way.
I was so afraid when they did that "Calloway...."I Wanna Be Rich" bullshit that another great funk band would devolve into a total retro-joke.
Apparently not. They have the good sense to know what the fans wanna hear & are givin it UP at every show.
Good on 'em. Funk Is It's Own Reward
