Why do gay men idolize female artists? I know there are straight men that are fans of female singers but I’m just curious on why a lot of gay men are fascinated with these women. I notice it more in the pop fandom; I hope my post is not offensive this was not my intent.

Maybe they more easily relate to female emotions.

Emotions are just emotions. The same emotions a man has, a woman has too. And vice versa. But, I do see what you mean and you may be correct on some level with what you've said.

Seems if said woman has been through alot and/or they are camp as all hell, along with a "never say die" attitude etc....

things like that some gay men can probably relate to, or they find endearing, particually if they have been through alot of shit as alot of gay people in general do aswell.

Maybe the same reason "stud" women dress in a hip hop "thug" male like manner. I've seen homosexual guys that aren't into the "diva" thing though.

Because on the average women are less apt to judge gay men...and most of them are really good friends with them in so much that some straight guys get jealous.

Not me. Now, when I was a child, my favorites were women such as The Bionic Woman, Wonder Woman, Charlie's Angels, Samantha from "Bewitched". But when I got a little older into my teens, it was someone I could relate to more who was the same gender as I am which was Prince who is a gay man.

But 90 percent of my favorite musical acts are male funk bands.

I wondered too for years, cause the more time I spent online, the more I came across that, as well as those having an appreciation for Judy Garland, Liza Minelli, Elizabeth Taylor and so forth. I even realized, I as a female love all the big divas but was unsure about my sexuality. I like males for the most part but am not afraid if I'm attracted to a female too, cause it does happen time to time. One may say I'm bisexual, but I think sexuality is fluid not fixed really on my part.

I wished it didn't. That's why we got the problems we got in this world. Hell a few years ago when I was attending public school and riding home, some of my friends joked about me liking classic rock.

To be honest, Boy George, Elton John, George Michael, David Bowie, Prince, Freddie Mercury and the like influenced me more than the women though I grew up listening constantly to Madonna, Tina, Janet, Whitney, Diana and Aretha.

Idolizing some person from a distance seldom means that you want to fuck that person.

I think a lot of straight men find it hard to identify themselves as being a "fan" of some female artist. The music enthusiasts with a wide taste in music may do that, but not the average guy that listens to mainstream radio and buys the occasional CD from the store. Gay men aren't as tied to the same stereotypical expectations that concern straight men, so that probably provides an additional push for it.

Of course, there are many aspects about female artists that gay men may identify with. It's not necessarily just due to the image of the female artists, but also the lyrics that are addressed to a male person etc. To be honest, I don't think the reasons why some gay men are really into female artists is not that hard to understand on a more "intuitive" lever, but trying to put it into words may result in rather awkward comments or even politically incorrect statements.

Being fascinated in most anything is irrational in any case.

For me, I prefer highly emotional singers. It just so happens that most of them are female. I like a voice that can touch my soul, that can mentally take me to a whole different plane. It just so happens most of them have been female. I prefer songs with great meaning and depth and that address romantic (not sexual) issues. It just so happens that most of those songs, for me, have come from female singers.

I think the reason why straight men dont idolize female singers the same way that gay men do is because straight men tend to sexualize female singers while gay men don't. So, straight men are a lot less likely to go out and spend money to hear a great voice.

And yes, there are plenty of gay men who are not into the female singer thing. A lot of people hate to admit this, but there are lots of gay guys who are totally into Hip-Hop music.

It doesn't matter if it's a friend, someone in the office, someone on the screen or on stage, a singer, whatever...if you are a badass bitch, I will swoon.

I've always gotten along with women way better than men (tragically gay men too )

When it comes to lyrics I almost only identitfy with ones from a feminine's POV

and thats why the men I like tend to have a feminine side (Prince, Queen, Bowie) or lyrics that transend gender (Springsteen, David Bazaan, Nirvana)

Why they're aren't many gay male artists out there to follow I don't know. I'm not very into Lambert.

Rufus is boring, Lambert is hard to stomach, Aiken is out of the question.

I do love Boy George, and Elton. But why are the only successful gay male acts the ones that remained ambiguous until after their peak.

Women tend to be better singers.

Or at least a bit more exciting singers.

If you're too open about it, you won't have much commercial success. Yeah Rufus, his music is alright but I think I have to be in a certain mood to get into Rufus. I think Boy George was actually OPEN but he was playing coy at first. I think he came out during the Grammy Awards in 1983:

I mean I get why some gay people latch on to female artists because they see parts of themselves in the women (and their songs).

It's all about the DRAMA! Men have drama too, but with them it's not that exciting as with women....the emotion, the heartache, the tears...you name it. With men it gets boring very quick.

You gotta have a female singer for that.

Thank you for the ones who gave mature answers and I see some here are thinking I’m stereotyping when I am clearly not I was just asking a question because it’s something that I have observe keeping up with the pop fandom and yes I know not all but I seen a lot but anyway thanks.
