Who/Whom are some artists that you feel are great, but have put out forgettable work?

This question crossed my mind today while I was listening to India.Arie's Testimony vol 1. album. An artist like India is really good, but her music tends to be very forgettable to me. Are there any other artists like that you can think of?

Patricia Louise Holt - great performer but has the tendency of releasing crap save for the albums between 1977's Patti LaBelle and 1983's I'm in Love Again (her most flawless album IMHO).

At least with Patti, people recognize songs like "If Only You Knew," "Lady Marmalade," or "On My Own." Ask someone about India, they will just stare at you.

Yep Yep!

I'd say more of the "vocalists" today, I'm not talking about "fart of the month" gals, I'm talking about Syleena Johnson, Blu Cantrell, Truth Hurts, Faith Evans, Kelly Price and 'nem.

I love some of the stuff they released but on a broader scale? Its more miss than hit, hell, sometimes they even add a lot of pizzazz & life to certain uninteresting material just on the strength of their voices alone.

I def agree about India too. Her 2nd album was as far as I could go with her.

True. It's sad when the "ones who can sang" choose to have poor material. confused

Very good one. She has a great voice, but her songs just don't grab me.

Have you ever heard her first two independent releases pre-Lost & Found?

Trust me, Ledisi definitely has stellar and memorable work. These two albums prove it! thumbs up!

She should've cut around 5 or 6 tracks from Archandroid

George Benson's immediate post-Give Me The Night albums during his 'poppiest' '80s phase (In Your Eyes, 20/20... I actually really like Turn Your Love Around and Never Give Up On A Good Thing from '81's The George Benson Collection, though).

I totally disagree. I think all of her cds have been very consistent. She just don't have

any songs that appeal to the 106 and park crowd. It's like damn if you do, damn if you

don't. People say they want good music in lieu of most of the crap that you hear on the

radio but then an artist like Indie Arie or Lalah Hathaway give people that then they claim

its boring. People would prefer to hear an artist make useless rap collabos or slap some

3 minute crap on tape with the flava of the month producer i.e swizz beatz

Another good example here. Not just her albums are good. She puts on one damn

good show with a real live band. No artificial ingredients. All natural.

These young r&b girls need to get pen & pad in hand and take notes from this woman.

School is in session when she performs.

I agree.Throughout her career, she's had a hard time finding the right producers and the right songs. Most of her albums could not really be called "classic".'I'm In Love Again' is her best work....sweet,soulful and satisfying.Remember that horrible late-80s song "If You Asked Me To"? disbelief Crap like that is beneath her.

I know I might get heat for this one, but Mariah Carey is another perfect example of an artist putting out forgettable work. For me, Mariah's music as a whole has not extended beyond Butterflies, The Emancipation of Mimi, and a compilation of her greatest singles. That's just the honest truth, I know! Sorry Mimi fans...lol

Great voice. Forgettable songs.

I agree. She seems like a nice talented kid, but her music does nothing for me. Her music is very well done and super-extra-slickly overproduced, that sounds better suited for tv commercials than something I want to put on and listen to.

falloff

To be honest, she has always struggled to find decent material. Honestly though she's recorded more pop stuff than soul stuff, which is amazing that anyone could consider her a "soul artist" because if you think about her material, even her first six post-Labelle albums (and even pre-Labelle), most of her music has been straight-ahead POP music. I'm in Love Again was the perfect mixture of pop (the title track, "Love Bankrupt", "I'll Never, Never Give Up", "Lover Man"), soul ("If Only You Knew", "Love, Need & Want You"), and lite funk ("Body Language", "When Am I Gonna Find True Love"). Before (and after), she struggled. I think her best pre-1983 album was the 1977 debut album honestly. But you're right, a lot of her material is not "classic". The voice might be but not the songs. razz
