Jamerson. He influenced every bassist in rock, pop and soul from the 60's to the present. Especially McCartney! His greatness has changed the role of the bass. Many play bass the way they do because they were inspired by someone else who was inspired by Jamerson and don't even know him. [Edited 6/27/11 11:12am] Release Yourself

Always loved the bass work post Revolver.
"Baby You're A Rich Man" especially.

Come Together was pretty funky. Loved that bass work. I play that almost everyday.

May take you way out of your comfort zone but check out Joe Osborn's work with 'The Carpenters'. Very melodic / McCartney-esque.
Pure genius w/ respect to supporting a song. If his work were the standard, a lot of bassists would be switching careers (to bass-tech)...
Also: Colin Moulding - XTC Me'Shell - of course My wife? She's my keel, and I'm her pesky boulder in shallow water... http://kideuphrates.wordpress.com/
