Don't worry. There has been enough of excellent music recorded in the past 100 years to get you through several lifetimes, even if you only spend 8 hours a day listening. "There is two kinds of music, the good, and the bad. I play the good kind."

You are an immature, ignorant brat. You're talking in circles, making pointless out of context and contradictory comments in order to start fights with everyone about a bunch of shit that makes no sense. In short, you've shown yourself to be about as smart as a fucking stump. Several people have tried to have intelligent discourse with you and you've belittled and insulted each and every one of them while twisting their words around to suit your needs. Grow up you dimwitted turd. You're the absolute worst kind of internet troll I can think of.
There, is that more like how you'd like to converse?
Edit: Yeah, I edited. Not because I felt bad, but because I didn't want the post deleted. [Edited 6/24/11 21:59pm]

I'm not trying to get anyone's attention. He is young an doesn't like today's music. I am young and I think that is an idiotic and overrated opinion. If I were trying to gain attention, I'd be posting all these pictures, or gifs, or videos like you see others doing.

I'm not a "rude ass" because I think somebody is an idiot for calling music dead. It's not. Especially when you only name like 2 or 3 artists. Music is much more diverse than it was 3 or 4 years ago. Few examples.
Nobody is making all these songs with girls in the videos anymore. People are actually starting to like music with more substance.

But where did "American" music come from? Europe, Asia and Africa!
Where did the English language come from? England!
There is very little in American culture that is new or completely original. There is a very good reason that America is known as the Great Melting Pot. Americans have taken various aspects from other cultures and forged them into their own style but without that foundation that comes from many other cultures there would be no "American" music.

Bro...I made a Tyler The Creator thread. Do you hear or see any of those artist you posted on the radio or T.V.? No. That's why I said music is dead because their playing the same corny music on the radio and T.V.(Lil Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj etc...)

I have trouble taking you serious.
Odd Future were featured on Jimmy Fallon's late night show and it boosted their popularity to new heights.
Tech Nine has a new music video that recently debuted on MTV.
Kid Cudi has also performed on numerous late night television shows and gets plenty of airtime.
All you have done is diss Lil Wayne and Drake. Okay, you don't like them.
I have done my fair share of Weezy bashing, but he isn't really that bad when you compare him to most mainstream rappers.
+Someone in this thread mentioned Wayne not playing guitar, well, he does play. You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

I am glad to be the one to tell you this:
There has never been a decade of popular music where the music in and of itself was considered mostly good. I've had this argument here before and was chastised but my argument still stands and is sound:
Pull out a Billboards Top 100 chart from the 50s - now. You will see some really good stuff (which is highly subjective) and you'll see mostly shite (which is highly subjective as well). The 60s gave us the Beatles, Beach Boys, etc. The 70s gave us stellar R&B. The 80s gave us the stellar pop and the namesake of the board. The 90s gave us stellar hip hop. But these generations were filled then as they are now, with disposable music that I doubt will make it into the western pop music canon. Dumb shit makes up 70% of any Billboard chart in my opinion.
The culprit of all of this?
You...as in the buying, normal populace who wants cheesy corn music that is opposite of cerebral.
If there was no desire for cheese, there'd be no cheese. You think the reason why classical music and America's only contribution to classical music, i.e. Jazz, are not popular because it's so easily digested? No!
Again, if there was no desire for corn and cheese, there'd be no corn or cheese.
People act as if the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s were so fucken great! No, they weren't. These decades each had their chart topping artists who'll never get mentioned again.
I blame YOU.

No disrepect but the "Yonkers" song by Tyler...well, um, I really tried my best listening to it but after the first 45 seconds I skipped forward to see if I could hear anything different. But, no, I skipped forward another minute and it sounded the same (which to me, is awful). I don't want to insult anyone's taste but there's no melody, key changes, instrumentation, and this guy's voice seems so damn monotone. I guess the reason I'm put off by a lot of so-called music today is that it sounds like it was just thrown together in 10 minutes. I can't sing nor play an instrument, so why would I waste time listening to so-called autotuned artists who can't sing nor play instruments either?
I'm not old by any means and have felt that the past decade or so of mainstream music (with a few exceptions) has been largely one-dimensional. I think this is part of the reason why Lady Gaga's commercial success has basically taken the world by storm because there really hadn't been anyone who "seemed" original and who had a different sound.
I think R&B is basically in the gutter, thanks to the shady promoters/managers/etc. who are just dying for "crossover" appeal while destroying the soul of R&B.
I'm really, REALLY trying to like Janelle Monae but it seems like her gimmick has already worn off. I find Bruno Mars to be unbearably irritating and I'm TRYING to like him.
One reason I appreciate Prince is because, good or bad, he CHALLENGED us with new sounds, looks, etc. and I think when he complains about "today's music", perhaps that's what he's referring to. Today's music is basically overproduced and condensed for ringtones and not for the soul. Trolls be gone!

I can think of at least a few factors at the top of my head for the state of music.
1. There is less money than ever in the music industry for artists to earn a living on, it has become a part time hobby more than ever for new artists.
2. Though technology now makes it feasible for upcoming artist to do what the Beatles and Quincy Jones spent millions of dollars to produce at a tiny fraction of the cost, that still only buys you the ability to produce the music, but not all the talented people that came with it and were involved in a Quincy Jones or Beatles production. The tools are just a small part of cooking the soup.
3. Even when great songs are released, the music industry is so fragmented now that a lot of good music fall through the cracks. That was one of the great benefits of the old music industry, where there was a very focused streamlined machine that moved music to direct channels and promoted the shit out of it. Now music has so many different avenues and hyper-specialized, ghettoized, hyper-focused, sub-categorized channels that it is very difficult to find a place where all the best of the best from all categories, that are promoted properly and can be accessed easily and consumed casually while listening to the radio on-line at home at work, in the car... I find myself channel surfing too much, get tired and just leave it on a station and just suffer through the monotony of it as tiresome as that one hyper-focused style of music on that one station may become. And that is not such a bad thing, but it is a two edged sword.
I think, the problems I listed above are only problems in the short run, as time passes, someone will figure out how to balance things out and turn a problem into a multi-million dollar solution. Problems are only problems until someone figures out how to address them, and makes a killing in the process. I think the field is once again wide open for someone to make a killing in the music industry and re-invent it.

Music is not dead and never will be. What has happened is radio...radio is now own by conglomerates, i.e. Clear Channel who tell us what they "think" we should be listening to. The autonomy of radio is dead. There was a time when a DJ would step outside of his playlist and play a song that he really liked...it caught on and became a hit. Those days are over. There's still good music being made, but you don't hear it.
I will admit we have gotten too wrapped up in image instead of the music. We're all a part of it.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yes, but hasn't that been true since the late '70s/early '80s when rigid playlists became the norm? It's not really a recent phenomenon. I'm sure things have become worse over the years but this is something that has been a problem for thirty years.

EXACTLY its not supposed to make sense.
the OP was talking about American Mainstream Music, and then another person brought up native americans and all other kinds of stuff, that had nothing to do with topic at hand. And i asked them, if you don't call the music that is made in the USA, American Music then what is it called. And I still never recieved an answer.
