Just what I've been waiting for: he's been off the radar since releasing the internet-only album, In Case of Emergency, 2 years ago. Thanks for making us aware!

Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter-producer Van Hunt makes his return this week with the online premiere of "June," his first new music in more than three years. "June" heralds the release of Hunt's new album, what were you hoping for? The album arrives in stores and at all digital retailers on September 27th.
"'June' was written to mirror a person's complicated moodiness," Hunt says. "Some people are called pessimists because of their persistent dourness, but I think they are optimists. Sorely disappointed optimists. The song is my attempt to make one, in particular, smile."
Hunt and his band plan to hit the road in the weeks surrounding the album's release, marking his first national tour since 2008. Hunt has attracted critical praise touring as headliner as well as alongside such acts as Kanye West, The Roots, Coldplay, Mary J. Blige, and Dave Matthews Band.

I love it.
Something about it reminds me of the music from the Twin Peaks series.

"June" is simply great, benifitting from a good arrangement and his usual imaginative lyrics. I want the new album right now.

After listening to this track, Hunt remains my favorite songwriter. Now let the slathering of superlatives commence:
Hunt knows how to craft a song - the chord modulations were tastefully done (it took me the second verse to catch on to what he was doing chordally), so too were the quirky flourishes hear and there. And his lyrics (with their Poe like imagery) are on point as usual. Hunt does not waste a word in order to create and finish a line; they are all important to him. That's the mark of a craftsman, in my opinion - care, talent, intricacy...
There were two albums I was looking forward to this year: Bush and Hunt. Bush let me down. Hunt sounds promising.
He's a helluva songwriter - I don't know if you guys understand that what he's crafting, musical snippets of Monk and Stone, is brilliant.
Our generation is looking for hooks, beats, looks and fail to pay attention to the music and the lyrics. Hunt is not catchy. And he ain't gon' stun us with his musicianship/chops. But you don't need those things for conveyance. He doesn't need to dance on stage. He is not an entertainer.
He takes care...dude is one of my favorite songwriters of all time and I wouldn't be afraid to suggest he's the best songwriter (definitely in R&B/soul) in the past decade, genre notwithstanding.

Is it really a song or more of a mindfuck? It's a taste of something really intriguing. The bizarreness reminds me of a great Prince vault song. Prince should take notes, because this is the sound he has lost.
This was never meant to be a fully fleshed out song, but it is wonderful to hear. It really sinks into your subconsious. All you others say Hell Yea!!

I don't know why people INSIST upon mentioning Prince with Van Hunt. Hunt and Prince are two different satellites orbiting the same moon; otherwise, I think it's a lazy argument.
What is a "fully fleshed out" song? June has a verse and chorus - what else do you want/need, the 12" extended version?!...its an aperitif served before the album.
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is 30 seconds of classic never go outta style music: and it too is a song.

Stop trying to make Prince happen. He's not going to happen.

Oh my gawd,
No, no, NO! Please don't turn this thread into another one of those arguments. In my opinion, Hunt is an amalgamation of Thelonious Monk and Sly Stone with 70s funk bands from Ohio thrown in!!!!!!!!!
But who cares about influences anyways??!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Why are we humans, me included, always trying to categorize things?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?
I come here only to talk about Hunt, don't ruin this for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude, chill the fuck out. It's only an online forum
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Oh, please. I was being facetious - this is indicated by the extended use of punctuation. Think, McFly...
Comparing Prince to Hunt is a lazy comparison with no musical merit.
And if you can't live without love as your banal signature tells us, why are you telling people to "chill the fuck out?" The tone of your was mean. Don't fuck with me right now...please and in a nice, respectful way.
Wait, why I am trippin' about a forum??????

His voice sounds a little like Sam Cooke. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!
