Singer and former Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland is sitting pretty these days atop the charts.

Destiny's Child helped put her on the map.
Now this singer has a hot single with a sexy video featuring her dancing in revealing outfits. She also has tons of adoring fans at home and abroad, a love of fashion and a new, high-profile promotional gig.
No, not that singer.
While Beyoncé Knowles has always been the recognized megastar of the hit girl group from the 1990s, these days Kelly Rowland is also causing a stir.
Her single featuring superstar rapper Lil Wayne, "Motivation," recently earned the No. 1 spot on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart. Rowland also recently scored a gig as a judge on the hit British singing competition, "The X Factor."

A long-awaited third solo album, "Here I Am," is slated for release in the fall. A second single, "Lay It on Me" featuring rapper Big Sean, debuted this week.
After years of watching group mate and best friend Knowles burn red hot with fans, Rowland now appears poised to grab some shine of her own.
"When you have been standing in the shadows, frankly, of Beyoncé for your entire professional career, it's really hard to make a name for yourself," said Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts for Billboard. "I think this is just another building block in Kelly Rowland Inc. and trying to further herself and take a stand as an independent artist."
The association with Knowles laid the foundation for the woman born Kelendria Trene Rowland.
Rowland lived with the Knowles family as a youngster as they pursued music careers as "Destiny's Child." They were teens when their 1999 hit album, "The Writing's on the Wall," thrust them into fame and started the rise of one of the music industry's most successful girl singing groups.
"When you think about the history of girl groups -- I won't say all but some, which are the stories we always hear about -- some aren't the best-ending situations," Rowland said in an interview with The Telegraph last year. "But Destiny's Child, we did a great job of supporting each other and being there and still remaining close, so that's what I'm most proud of us for."
The two best friends have gone out of their way to proclaim that there is no rivalry, yet comparisons were unavoidable as Knowles found fame in films and music while Rowland struggled finding her footing with her solo ventures and appeared in films such as "Freddy vs. Jason" and the straight-to-DVD "The Seat Filler."

^^LeToya Luckett also released a couple of albums.

She seems like a nice girl but her music stinks! - actually I find it all unbearable.

She has had loads of big hits in Europe though - so good luck to her.

Kelly is never going to have that "crossover" appeal to other races like Beyonce can, its that simple, case closed on that. For the many reasons that Mya and Amerie didnt appeal to white america and the same reason Teedra Moses Tearria Mari and now Ciara dont have that hold is they cant sell to white america, take that any way you want but its true, Beyonce is the safe girl for white people, as is Rihanna, see if you would have given all Rihanna songs to someone like PATRA and see if she would "appeal" then. It doesnt matter the material, Kellys material and all the others i mention have far more interesting material than Beyonce has had, but thats not what this is about, music is not what people are buying.

Oh yeah, I forgot, I loved LeToya's first album, it sort of had a 90's sounding R and B vibe to it, and I LUV 'I Need A You' from her second album, it sounds very Prince inspired love.

Other than Shaggy, dancehall has never really crossed over. It doesn't even get urban radio play. Teedra Moses is not on a major, so that limits any chance to get on the radio.

Um, what about Sean Paul? He is definitely a dancehall artist and he was pretty big for a few years at least. Beenie Man as well.

I just don't see Rowland breaking through in the US.Her music isn't great, she doesn't have the "it" factor, ad she doesn't have the "look". There seems to be a pretty standard formula for pop stars these days and she doesn't have it.

Also, folks have been talking about her "time to shine" since she went solo. Just because her bandmate hit it big, doesn't mean that she is going to have equal or even similar success. Lightning isn't going to strike that close twice. She has had big singles before as I recall, but she never becomes a big star. I think she is at her peak and thats ok.

But Moses would never cross over, her look isnt safe, just like amerie and mya and Kelly, Beyonce and Rihanna are safe, even now when people think Rihanna is Raunchy because of her stage act and S&M etc...but its safe playful stuff that gets through, Kelly and Mya and Teedra never could do that on a mainstream stage, mya did on mtv and got blasted for it and she was gone from that scene, people at the mtv show "shook their heads like OH shit shes giving a lap dance, like MTV didnt promote sex 24/7 with shows like undressed and mtv fuckfest shows like real world hawaii and whatever place they could find 9 idiots to stay in a house and learn a script.

Mari was on a major and got dumped by Jay Z who signed her in place of Rihanna who looked more "safe" Mari is far from safe, just check her mixtapes and 10 + videos shes done from them, mainstream america would be crucifying her for it.

Never heard of him. The other one I only heard a song he did with Janet Jackson. I don't follow modern radio music.

If you take a group like Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings or Brand New Heavies and erase Sharon's & N'Dea's vocals, have Beyonce or Rihanna sing over the exact same tracks (releasing them under their names and not the bands' names), they wouldn't cross over no matter what they look like. It's doubtful they would get played on the hip hop R&B stations or shown on BET either.

i think has to do with more with age than anything...

You're right. Although I do think Kelly was and IS the most best looking DC3 member (beauty wise and vocally), she needs to get her vocal training game up a little bit more. When she sings, it does sound like she's gasping for air, but her voice is the most clear out of the girls...

Very true. Kelly just doesn't have the skin tone amerikkka likes. Plain and simple! it sucks. But she isn't the only one, look at janelle monae, jill scott, erykah badu, india arie, grace jones, and many more. America loves what they consider safe black people. The biggest prime example was whitney houston, many people knew she was "HOOD" but she played the safe card. But the truth got her in the end!!!! But I also notice it's not just black artist!!! This is why I respect janelle monae hussle because she may not be well known but she is always touring with somebody. Sometimes fame isn't everything, it's all about passion of work ethic. But there's alot that can be said, this is just my opinion on the matter.

Kelly is actually very huge overseas & bigger than Beyonce over there. She is just now catching on here in the US. U maybe biting your words. I do understand what your saying & your right about a lot U say. But they said the same about Oprah & she turned out to be the richest women in the entertainment industry..........It is just taking Kelly a little longer.

Beyonce is a sellout & a liar. She has been caught in so many lies. But she is a hard worker and Kelly has been working nonstop for just as long. It will payoff for her..

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince
