Alexander looks like the Candyman
like if you said "Candyman" 3 times in the dark, you'd hear the opening of Fake in the echo and you see this

That's not totally true. A producer in some cases only enhances what was/should already be there. If you don't have even a solid voice or an ounce of creativity with melody, arrangement, or a pen it won't matter who you got workin the boards or what band is backin you up.

The makers of Unsung need to do a comedy series on comics. I'd love to hear about Aresnio Hall, Robert Townsend, cats who were bif in the late 80s to mid 90s than just vanished. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Oh, please. How is Prince anymore ashamed of being black than Alex?
One might posit that Alex is as colorstruck as the next man, hence his boatload of lightskinned children and white spouse. He said early on in the show that he felt that he was treated differently because he was darker than some of his siblings. So, he might often think that at times when he is slighted it is because of his skin color. Therefore, light skinned Prince didn't want him in the Time because he was too dark. He needs to diagnose his own color issues rather than what he perceives to be Prince's. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

Alex was sweating like hell in that video for Fake. I thought Cherrelle was a good singer but not great. Her voice seems a little shot now and i hope she hadn't been doing a little bit of that stuff that Alex has because she looks a lot different now than she did even in 1992. Don't laugh at my funk

I disagree with this. I think Prince has color issues like many blacks, but I do not think they are the way that some perceive them. For example, the convenient blackness that people are referencing here to me refers to Prince's understanding of race and racism in this country and the entertainment industry. As Arthur Ashe stated in his autobio, "Whites like their blacks in token amounts." This is nothing new. Most of the black entertainers who have achieved mainstream success are light skinned, light brown, thin featured or mixed, especially those who achieve sex symbol status.
Prince knew this and played on that white racism to promote himself to the mainstream. by exploiting what some thought was a racially ambiguos look. He knew he didn't want to be pigeonholed like many black artists before him. However, I do not think he ever abandoned black media. He did not distance himself prior to his fight with Warner (the so-called "Slave" fiasco that you referenced). Prince didn't do many interviews with white or black media back in the day or even now. However, I remember him being interviewed on black radio by people like Tom Joyner and featured in black magazines throughout his heyday and afterward. Back in the day he gave BET/Video Soul exclusive videos and content during the '80s and '90s. I remember different members of the band being on during the SOTT era, Diamonds and Pearls and others. In the '80s he was giving money to Marva Collins' school, so I don't think he distanced himself from who he was. Additionally, unlike many other high profile black celebrities, Prince has employed blacks in myriad key positions throughout his career. His bands and friends are majority black as well. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

One of my fave eps. Alexander came off as unlikabe and egotisitical. He is not as good a singer as thinks. He also looks seriously crazy with those mean eyes of his.
Cherrelle has an annoying pipsqueak voice when not singing, but she is likable. On another note, jsut by the name Randy Rand, she should have known he was trouble.
Also, Pebbles came off as old to me. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Some on is going STRAIGHT TO HELL for that Candyman comparison. Y'all hear me? STRAIGHT TO HELL.
Now about this whole Alexander, Prince beef, I gotta side with my girl Harle (hi Harle!!!!). Someone IS LYING. My oldest cousin, my infamous Uncle Teddy's daughter has damn near every Black Beat, Right On and some Rock n Soul mags from the early to late 80s. And last Xmas, I was in there reading and at the time (no pun intended), that Alexander and Prince beef was real. And according to interviews Alex gave and others involved gave, there is a lot more to the story that was said. I can't really remember what, but what I do remember is that Alex was in the Time for longer than a hot minute, that's for sure. And Morris was not mentioned as calling to relay the "you're fired" message to Alex. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Boom. And there it is. So Alex sold out, what, 60,000 seats at the peak of his fame.
Prince sold out 525,000 seats (O2 is 25k capacity x 21 nights).... 22 years after his commercial peak
Anyway - is this episode online yet? I wanna watch. Someone hit me up with a link. |

TONYVANDAM from 2005 said : Long Story Short: The real reason why Prince fired Alexander O'Neal had nothing to do with being "too black looking or sounding". He was fired from The Time because he wanted more money. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis had verify this story more than once before. And Alexander also admitted that he and Prince had never seen "eye to eye" musically.
blacknote in 2010 said: I've read a few interviews in which O'Neal states that he was fired for a range of reasons. One reason being (and probably the most absurd) that he was too "black" and another for not holding his tongue when challenged. Dude could sing his ass off though.
