I remember reading a review for Cherrelle's 1988 album, Affair and it was clear that Cherrelle, just like Janet, was a "producer's singer." Without talented and established producers on their side, they wouldn't be where they are today

you can say this about pretty much anybody,if they dont find the right chemistry it wont work.if you gonna make this statement you have to include all the motown acts , the philly acts, and so on.

That's not totally true. A producer in some cases only enhances what was/should already be there. If you don't have even a solid voice or an ounce of creativity with melody, arrangement, or a pen it won't matter who you got workin the boards or what band is backin you up.

but we all knew that lol

Oh, please. How is Prince anymore ashamed of being black than Alex?

One might posit that Alex is as colorstruck as the next man, hence his boatload of lightskinned children and white spouse. He said early on in the show that he felt that he was treated differently because he was darker than some of his siblings. So, he might often think that at times when he is slighted it is because of his skin color. Therefore, light skinned Prince didn't want him in the Time because he was too dark. He needs to diagnose his own color issues rather than what he perceives to be Prince's.

O'neal still seems bitter about Prince kicking him out. But it worked out better for him in the end. Still that was a nasty comment to make about Prince. When Prince has remained still very successful to this day. I always knew he was on drugs. He was always sweating like Whitney Houston when he would perform, without doing that much.

JJ&TL always keep it real in any interview they give. They never seem intimidated by anyone. O'neal had one of the most soulful voices, he could have been huge. I never really felt that Cherrelle was that good of a singer & still don't. She had a good look & image though. But without JJ&TL like she said she was nothing. O'neal could have made it without them. But sadly drugs took over...

Alex was sweating like hell in that video for Fake. lol

I thought Cherrelle was a good singer but not great. Her voice

seems a little shot now and i hope she hadn't been doing a little bit

of that stuff that Alex has because she looks a lot different now

than she did even in 1992.

Somebody's ass is lying, I don't know who.

The Time concept was developed long before Baby Alex came into the picture as a deal between Prince & Morris(in result of the "Partyup" blatant rip off).

Now I know that Alex auditioned to be a member of the band, but I don't know which part is true, the implication in DMSR that he didn't wanna settle with the measly payment or that he was too dark to be frontman.

That being said, Alex is correct in his assessment that Prince was conveniently "black" when it served his purpose, its nothing new. Back in the 80s he distanced himself from black media outlets and threw himself into the mainstream crowd, until the "Slave" fiasco happened thats when all of a sudden he embraced the black media. Even his drummer Michael Bland pointed this out.

[Edited 6/21/11 9:31am]

I disagree with this. I think Prince has color issues like many blacks, but I do not think they are the way that some perceive them. For example, the convenient blackness that people are referencing here to me refers to Prince's understanding of race and racism in this country and the entertainment industry. As Arthur Ashe stated in his autobio, "Whites like their blacks in token amounts." This is nothing new. Most of the black entertainers who have achieved mainstream success are light skinned, light brown, thin featured or mixed, especially those who achieve sex symbol status.

Prince knew this and played on that white racism to promote himself to the mainstream. by exploiting what some thought was a racially ambiguos look. He knew he didn't want to be pigeonholed like many black artists before him. However, I do not think he ever abandoned black media. He did not distance himself prior to his fight with Warner (the so-called "Slave" fiasco that you referenced). Prince didn't do many interviews with white or black media back in the day or even now. However, I remember him being interviewed on black radio by people like Tom Joyner and featured in black magazines throughout his heyday and afterward. Back in the day he gave BET/Video Soul exclusive videos and content during the '80s and '90s. I remember different members of the band being on during the SOTT era, Diamonds and Pearls and others. In the '80s he was giving money to Marva Collins' school, so I don't think he distanced himself from who he was. Additionally, unlike many other high profile black celebrities, Prince has employed blacks in myriad key positions throughout his career. His bands and friends are majority black as well.

while I thought it was kinda "WHOA" when he said it, if you get fired from a group because you're "too black" wouldn't YOU be mad? neutral

But I honestly don't even believe that. How can you get fired for being "too black"? Doesn't make sense, all of the band members of "The Time" were NOT light skinned so that reason is just a bullshit excuse for what really happened which is what Jimmy and Terry said, Alex came in there demanding shit like he was hot shit or something and he got shot down. Now the real question is this, why the fuck is Alex bitter towards Prince for getting kicked out the group when it was really Morris who made the damn phone call??? hmmm See what I mean.

I just don't get why he's still so bitter, I mean wasn't this a blessing in disguise? Your ass ended up having some type of successful career at one point after that so why still act like your feeling still hurt over it? Besides that, when Alex finally achieved the success he so craved he couldn't even handle it.

Overall I thought the episode was just hilarious. Between Cherrelle's annoying ass voice and her dramatic version of how everything went down and Alex's bitch fest, they both had me rolling. Alex was sitting up there looking like a burnt piece of toast at some point and at other times looking like Otis the trashman trying to paint himself out to be a victim. Funny how he doesn't own up to the mistakes he's made in his life and instead tries to justify everything. rolleyes He really sucks as how he was portrayed on the show last night. I just rather prefer to listen to his old jams and enjoy them the way they are. But him and Cherelle hyping up their current line up of dates performing live like its the best thing since apple pie had me dying laughing. lol

[Edited 6/21/11 4:41am]

Sadly yes. lol

The only way i would see this trainwreck was if it was free because i sure

wouldn't get a hard on for Cherelle these days. lol

And poor Alex. disbelief

One of my fave eps. Alexander came off as unlikabe and egotisitical. He is not as good a singer as thinks. He also looks seriously crazy with those mean eyes of his.

Cherrelle has an annoying pipsqueak voice when not singing, but she is likable. On another note, jsut by the name Randy Rand, she should have known he was trouble.

Also, Pebbles came off as old to me.

Some on is going STRAIGHT TO HELL for that Candyman comparison. Y'all hear me? STRAIGHT TO HELL.

Now about this whole Alexander, Prince beef, I gotta side with my girl Harle (hi Harle!!!!). Someone IS LYING. My oldest cousin, my infamous Uncle Teddy's daughter has damn near every Black Beat, Right On and some Rock n Soul mags from the early to late 80s. And last Xmas, I was in there reading and at the time (no pun intended), that Alexander and Prince beef was real. And according to interviews Alex gave and others involved gave, there is a lot more to the story that was said. I can't really remember what, but what I do remember is that Alex was in the Time for longer than a hot minute, that's for sure. And Morris was not mentioned as calling to relay the "you're fired" message to Alex.

Alex sold out Wembley Arena which housed a bit over 10,000 people, whereas Wembley Staium housed (at the time) 72,000

Boom. And there it is. So Alex sold out, what, 60,000 seats at the peak of his fame.

Prince sold out 525,000 seats (O2 is 25k capacity x 21 nights).... 22 years after his commercial peak lol

Anyway - is this episode online yet? I wanna watch. Someone hit me up with a link.
