I did the same thing. I have the DVD collection of 70s Soul Train and I watch this classic appearance by the J-5 all the time, along with their classic appearance on Soul Train as the Jacksons back in 1979, when Destiny came out and they were celebrating their 10th anniversary.

Don't deny Jermaine! Even though he's a major nutball, the man had much promise once upon a time. Just on a different caliber from Michael. Michael could never be duplicated or upstaged, so I see what you're saying. lol

Jermaine's debut album had just come out so they were tying to make it as successful as Got To Be There which had come 6 months earlier....but it wasn't LOL

Got There Be There (January 24, 1972)- Pop #14, R&B #3

Looking Through The Windows (May 23, 1972)- Pop #7, R&B #3

Jermaine '72 (Jermaine's had 3 self titled albums lol ) (July 1972)- Pop #27 R&B #6

Ben (August 4, 1972)- Pop #5, R&B #4

Motown was popping out Jackson 5 albums lol

Agreed! By the end of the Jacksons' tenure at Motown, there was a total of roughly 18 albums (20-something, if you add greatest hits compilations and imports) released (solo and group-wise). Michael, Jermaine and Jackie all released solo albums. Damn! 1973 was probably the busiest year.

1969: Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5 (The Jackson 5)

1970: ABC (The Jackson 5)

1970: Third Album (The Jackson 5)

1970: The Jackson 5 Christmas Album (The Jackson 5)

Well yeah, but I don't really count that as an official release per se. It was only available in Japan and it is a live album, but you can add it sure. It's not that significant with their official releases in the US and elsewhere.

Yeah they have been playing the same old stuff here in Chicago (i.e. "Human Nature", "Billie Jean", "DSTYGE", "Rock With You", some J5 hits, etc.) I've been listening to my own stuff on my iPod classic. I was jamming with Jackson 5/Jacksons material this morning. It was crazy. I've been blasting the fourth disc of the Soulsation! set on my iPod as well. Just magnificent material. Fuck radio down here in Chicago, but it seems like they are playing great stuff down there where you are LittleBLUEcorvette!

I heard Michael say during an interview that his daughter was named Paris because that's where she was conceived.

I can't remember Michael saying it, but I do remember Debbie saying it twice. Who do you think is saying the truth? Hiltons or Debbie?

* there's also video

Fans by the hundreds made the pilgrimage to Neverland Ranch, Saturday, on the two year anniversary of Michael Jackson's death.

"My family and I we always come out here and bring flowers and pray," said Regan Martinez of Santa Maria.

Fans came from across the globe to pay their respects, including groups from Italy and China. Some wanted to leave trinkets behind, like balloons, flowers and notes. But Regan will have her tribute with her forever... a Michael Jackson silhouette covering her upper arm.

"My tattoo is about four months old, and I've wanted it for a long time and I finally just did it."

Just up the road from Neverland Ranch, Jackson fans Mone Baker and Kristina Stewart spent this day giving back. As volunteers, they helped riders on the Wine Country Bike Trek, a fundrasier for the Santa Ynez People Helping People charity. The bike ride raises money for disadvantaged families in Santa Barbara County.

"We wanted to do something that was more in line with his humanitarianism and philanthropy," said Stewart.

"We mourn of course, and our hearts are heavy today, but we're trying to turn this into something bigger," said Baker.

To honor his memory, they chose to be of service... a part of Jackson's legacy they want remembered.

"All the nonsense, everything else will fall away, and what will remain is the music, his art, his dance, his philanthropy, his humanitarianism... that's what will remain," said Stewart.

Michael Jackson: Remembering the star at 20

To the left (in the foreground) is Michael Jackson, and in the background is Marlon Jackson. (John McDonnell/The Washington Post)
Saturday afternoon, two years ago, I walked out of a movie theater on sunny afternoon in Chicago and got a text message from a friend: “Michael Jackson died.” I thought it was the start to a joke. Michael Jackson had been a star before I was born and — despite his personal struggles, his questionable behavior to children, his personal life spirals — managed to stay a star all my life.

The world was emptier without his talent, but it was the end to a difficult and challenging life. In memory of his death, here’s a remembrance of Michael Jackson full of life — before the surgeries, before the masks, before the court cases and tabloid troubles. Written by the Post’s Jacqueline Trescott on June 11, 1979, here’s Michael Jackson, a 20-year-old man on the verge of breaking out from his family’s shadow:

Michael Jackson, now 20, an elongated version of the cute, spindly youngster who finger popped into teen hearts 10 years ago, knows what he wants for the next 10.

“To do everything I feel I should do,” says Jackson, his trademark airy pitch unchanged. His dark eyes are direct, making no excuses for that goal. “Really, more music, films, everything. I want to go all the way.” His smile grows into grin, testing the boundaries of a crescent fact that, up close, is small and sand papery. His answers are the quick, flippant retorts of any 20-year-old, their tone mixed with the blase worldliness of someone who has spent half his life in the limelight.

Dressed in brown slacks and print shirt with a gray cavalry hat perched on a wayward afro, Jackson leans back onto the bedpost. His brother, Marlon, 22, one of the original five who started out as the Jackson Five in 1969 and renamed themselves the Jacksons three year ago, joins the conversation. Three hours before the group will bring 20,000-plus fans to their feet, on a night when a reported 5,000 were turned away, Michael and Marlon are totally relaxed. In fact, they are cutting up like the Smothers Brothers.

“What! There aren't any girls downstairs,” mocks Marlon, camouflaged behind sunglasses and a worn cream-colored jogging suit. From the corner, one of the managers announces that the lobby of the Sheraton Lanham Motor Inn was packed earlier in the day.

“Well I guess they'd expect us to be at the Regency, or the ‘Gate,” says Michael (who is given to abbreviations: ‘Gate for Watergate Hotel, ‘tics for politics, ‘Town for Motown Records, their first label).

Ten years ago, the Jacksons were all terribly green, painfully shy, leaving all the declarations to their father, Joseph Jackson. What they offered to the music scene were five blemishfree faces, heart-throbbing in their close-cut hair, chino pants and matching sports jackets. Out of Gary, Ind., they marketed bubble-gum soul, which brought them adulation and riches. But, even then, when they spoke, they were coy: their sound, explained one back then, “is a secret; too many people might find out and start doing it.”

Now, with their youth no longer a salable part of the act (Randy, the youngest, is 16), the Jacksons have to compete with established male acts like the O'Jays and Commodores. “We have to strive to set trends, instead of following them,” says Michael. They are succeeding. Their latest album, “Destiny” is certified platinum and has birthed two top 10 singles.

Yet 10 years has produced some changes. Chinos have been replaced by coordinated gold lame stitched into a medieval-futuristic combination. The screams have cultivated layers, from those whose years are marked by Jacksons' pin-ups and from a younger generation that can't be called bubble-gum, though that's its age and beat. In personnel, there have been alterations - one brother, Randy, substituting for another, Jermaine, who remained with Motown when the rest switched to CBS Epic Records.

But what has remained constant is the dominance of Michael Jackson. His career has gone further, expanding to movies with the role of the Scarecrow in “The Wiz,” and joining the gossip mystique, escorting Tatum O'Neal. On stage Michael's dancing is an impeccable sample of disco and acrobatics, stylishly flamboyant and patterned. The packaging has killed the spontaneity but, nevertheless, three women were carried over the rails in dead faints during Michael's solos Saturday night.

“In Charlotte, it was a little unreal because they carried the girls out in stretchers across the stage,” says Michael. That was Friday night, and a day later, he sounded slightly stunned. Marlon explains that they never get used to the screams, and Michael elaborates, “it honestly feels fresh each time.”

In the hotel room the two brothers are explaining what tours are like, insisting the Jackson public camaraderie carries over to travel and record sessions. In the fourth week of the two-month tour that ended over the weekend, the Jacksons switched from airplanes to a caravan of station wagons and mobile homes. “I prefer the bus. Flying is fine in good weather,” says Michael, who watches movies during the long drives and then rushes out to catch the zoo in each major city. “Hey he feels at home, looking at his relatives,” says Marlon.

“Well, that means you, right? Sure I like you,” says Michael.

Looking back, the Jacksons agree that the response they triggered in fans was the most fulfilling aspect of the last decade. “The fact that we have sold 60 million records and brought joy to so many people. I like that for the happiness, not for the money,” says Michael. “And playing for the Queen of England, twice; what an honor. I had a fantasy of kings and queens and there she was in her magic box, with her crown and jewels.” Marlon interrupts. “It's everyone we have touched, and selling out certain places, like the Astrodome and breaking the Beatles record in Liverpool.”

Success has brought certain luxuries. Marlon is buying a house in the San Fernando Valley, equipped with a tennis court, so he can live his fantasy of being a tennis pro. Waiting for Michael at the family's sprawling compound in Encino, Calif., are several movie offers.

“First there's the movie of ‘Chorus Line,’ but I haven't seen the script yet. Then someone is doing a script on the Bill Robinson story, then a movie about summer stock, about what people do to make it, the pain of success,” says Michael. Is he attracted to stories of struggle because his career has been free of scars? Michael immediately responds yes. Marion again interrupts. “In the early days, before we went national, we did the seven shows a night, traveling in a Volkswagen. That wasn't fun.” Corrects Michael, “It hasn't been bad, but we didn't come out of the blue.”

But what about the internal jealousies, the rifts that must come? “We like one another and think alike, so there are few problems. And we tell this one,” Marlon says, looking at Michael, whose attention has been caught by the television, “We tell him the most important thing is the last name.” Michael scowls. And Marlon amends, “I was only kidding.”

Thanks for posting I love to read about Mike before his megasuccess. Its funny he says "To do everything I feel I should do..." and he did.

nod Yep, they filmed that piece of shit "movie" in Canada on the cheap, and couldn't even get the rights to MJ's music. It was doomed from the very start. I remember a fan from MJJForum (now MJJC) somehow got a hold of an email sent from one vh1 producer to another about "Secret Childhood", basically acknowledging their intentions to slant their "documentary" and ultimately portray MJ as the very person he was accused of being in the courtroom. It was fucked up how they tainted a lot of great footage with so many lies and innuendos, all for ratings.

You know, I really like to ask Joseph why he wanted his chirren to call him Joseph. That's one of the only thing I really don't get. My parents would slap the shit out of me if I addressed them by their first name.

THE LIFE AND LONGING OF MICHAEL JACKSON: 2 YEARS TODAY...

Written by me!

Whew! Those two years have passed by so swiftly. I can still feel the shakes and anxiety I experienced when getting that call from my mother, informing me that Mike was hospitalized and turning on CBS to see the drama unfold. We had just lost Farrah Fawcett that same day and something was in the air. I knew it. Just something that I will never forget. It was as if someone was playing a sick joke or I was in some kind of weird nightmare. When it was confirmed that he died, I was just mortified, shocked, paranoid and frightened. Seeing the hundreds of people cluttered at the UCLA Medical Center is an image that will never escape my conciousness. My mind went blank at that moment and that whole rest of the day. I couldn't eat, watch any special or news broadcast involving his sudden death, or listen to music. That day was just...a wild circus! Seeing the helicopter taking off with his body to arrive at the coroner's officers was just sickening and sad. All this didn't hit me until the night of June 26th, when watching the "Gone Too Soon" and "Liberian Girl" videos and just thinking about how much this man was really L-O-V-E-D.

Outside of all of the drama and controversy that has surrounded his untimely death and its aftermath, it is important that Michael's music and impact is prevelant in the culture we live in today. Nonetheless, we must also utilize Michael as the true example of a complex genius as well as multi-faceted man, who lived life on his terms without a care. Sure, there were perplexing moments in his life that caused him to be mythologized, maligned and unfairly scrutinized, but Michael was deep. Deep not only in his many talents, but his character as well. His soul, giving spirit and courage was abundant and it all derived from the spirit and hope of his own upbringing. The hardwork and commitment of the Jackson Family fueled a whole new movement in American culture and Michael, along with his parents and siblings, did their best to show the world how there is indeed light at the end of any tunnel.

The hidden links in Michael's enduring musical legacy lies tales and messages of desire, struggle, justice, joys and sorrows. These stories must've been among the culmination of Michael's own personal life, as it was filled with a myriad of pride and devastation. Amazingly, these songs are the only real stories that have accurately told the truth on the many dimensions of Michael Joseph Jackson. His defining voice and remarkable talents as a performer, songwriter, producer, musician and dancer were filled with careful skill and unmatchable virtuoso, which echoed the best of other icons such as Jackie Wilson, James Brown and Charles "Cholly" Atkins before him. The fiery and perfection of Michael's talent was towering, but his sweeping career, which lasted four decades, proved that there was something more. Vision and dedication was among the many reasons as to why it all stood strong.

The legacy of Michael Joseph Jackson is simply this: endurance, pride and willingness. If one takes the time to listen to his entire catalog, from the earliest Steeltown recordings to the last full-length of his career, Invincible, there lies the journey of a legend. We will miss Michael! I salute you as a man and living testimony of what a human being should be. Furthermore, thank you for everything! rose pray worship

Beautiful tribute,Silverchild. I am reading your words with tears in my eyes. I still can't believe MJ is gone.

Don't forget In JApan, also from 1973.

Also, is everyone's local RnB stations playing MJ and Jacksons music non stop? Since Friday, they have on Majic 102 in Houston. They played I Am Love, Push Me Away and This Is It (havent't heard TIT on the radio since they premiered it in 2009) on the radio!!!

Yeah, they playin all the songs, not just the top hits. They are even playin old intervies with Mike. They had a Tom Joyner intervuew from like 82 when Thriller just broke.

Michael Jackson 'Thriller' jacket fetches $1.8M

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — A famed black-and-red calfskin jacket that Michael Jackson wore in the classic "Thriller" video has sold at auction for $1.8 million.

Darren Julien, president and CEO of Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills, says the jacket was purchased Sunday by Milton Verret, a commodities trader from Austin, Texas.

The jacket is one of two Jackson wore during the filming of the 1983 "Thriller" video. Jackson wears the jacket in a scene with a troupe of zombies who rise from their graves and break into a dance routine.

Verret says the jacket will be sent on tour and used as a fundraising tool for children's charities.

A portion of the sale price will go to the Shambala Preserve, a big cat sanctuary caring for two tigers Jackson one owned.

Is Katy Perry the new Queen of Pop?
The singer's latest smash, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," jumped 27 spots this week on Billboard's Hot 100, where it's now No. 4 with a bullet.
If it hits the top, like four previous songs from Perry's latest album - "California Gurls," the title track, "Firework" and "E.T." - she'll tie a record held my Michael Jackson, most No. 1 hits from a single album.
And surprisingly enough, that album's name is "Bad," not "Thriller."
"Bad" sent five songs "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," the title track, "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror" and "Dirty Diana."
One significant difference between the Perry album and Jackson's is the way those hits drove album sales.
By the summer of 1988, when "Dirty Diana" became the fifth chart-topping song from "Bad," the album had gone six-times-platinum.
Perry's album has yet to be certified platinum.
But she's more a singles artist, and it's less an albums world.

The point is, it's easy to get #1 with catchy tunes nowadays with Itunes. However, back in the 80's.. people actually had to go out and buy the singles. Also, Mike has always been an albums person rather than a single artists like Katy Perry. She'll probably be irrelevant in a few years. She's cool though.
