If you are speaking of the version in the video posted as the "single" version versus the album version, then I have to go with the single version.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Album version is better IMO, it has more of the Jam & Lewis sound to it. That video version is actually the edited 12" version, I remember back in 88' when I was nine picking up this 12" from the wrecka stow with my little allowance money, good times!!

LayDownMisty

This song is the story of my life. smile

But seriously, this song is better than any song by Backstreet, NSync, NKOTB, etc. I have always wondered why they did not become more famous and can only assume negative things but for the sake of keeping this thread in this forum, I will not speak on that.

I also loved N.E. Heartbreak

here is a live version and they sound great live too!!

Prince - not black, not white........just COOL

The album version is way better. It's one of my favorites. I may be the only person who thinks it's a better song than "Can You Stand the Rain."

LayDownMisty, N.E. were R&B superstars in their day, but even though they managed to have some crossover success (most notably with "Cool It Now"), the splinter acts became even bigger from a crossover POV (especially Bobby and BBD).

I like the album version the best. It is because like some said..that jimmy and terry sound....it was unique in my opinion. Haven't heard a beat like that before or since that production. Goes well with the arrangement. I'm glad that they do not remix the whole song on the video versions anymore, that shit got played out really quick.

I knwo I wished all their tours were somewhere. I have the Home Again bootleg dvd and Ricky wasnt there for some odd reason..I think ti was him.

My mom told me she went to see them after the All For Love album was released...I would have loved to see them sing some of their hits right there at the height of their career (imagine them singing Sweet Thing excited )

Album version. Probably my favorite song on an album full of smashes. I played their "Past & Present" vhs to death growing up. Still watch it about once or twice a month nowadays.

LOL I still have their old 80's VHS comp somewhere? Itr was OK, but it edited the hell out of some of the videos, though it was cool to see Jam and Lewis working behind them when the guys were being interviewed LOL. But it was frustrating when they teased with clips from the tour LOL.

Some of the clips from youtube must be from that video...I never seen it do not believe...however I have always hated that live 12" remix version of Crucial fuse

Gonna have to disagree there. From that same album, "N.E. Heartbreak" is much better in its remixed form (and I also prefer the single remix of "Crucial," but I'm right there with you on the live version).

I LOVE this version, way more than the one on the album.

And every time I listen to this track, I imagine Bobby singing/performing it, circa 1989. Sounds just like him to me, and would have fit perfectly on his second album.

Just imagine Don’t be cruel songs mixed with N.E. Heartbreak album it would have been flawless.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I wonder if it's available "shortened" on the 7" single perhaps? Otherwise I'm taking that schitt to Cool Edit and chopping it down. lol

Are you talking about "Crucial" or do you honestly like the original version of "N.E. Heartbreak" better than the remix? eek

I mean, it's a good song and all, but the remix has

1. more Johnny

2. "knock 'em out the box, Rick"

3. "doin' it with the R"

4. "don't forget the pumps"

5. "I said, "Yo baby, how the hell are you livin'? Cut that zero and roll with Michael Bivins.'"

The remix is alright, but I do like the original version more...it doesnt sound so hip hop influenced..hence more dated than it should be.

The climax of the song on the original just sounds more banging. The video was awesome though.

The Crucial remix I dont like either because of too much hip hop influence...I mean I know New Edition always had their one song stab at hip hop like School, Pass The Beat and Kinda Girls We Like but it just took away from the original composition imo.

Well, I can see it if you don't generally like the hip-hop elements of NE's music. I've always thought that was part of their charm. I'll never understand the "dated" complaint, though. shrug

The originals ..to me have more of a timeless sound...as in you can play it 10, 20 years from now and it still sounds fresh. Dated as in ...play it once and it sounds so cheap and trendy like for it's time that I don't care to play it again for a long time. It was like they were trying hard to appeal to the kids of that era.

Oh, I know what "dated" means, I just don't see how it's a negative. "Be My Baby" sounds very much of its time. So what? It's still fantastic. A good song is a good song regardless of one's ability to discern its era (IMO of course).

Oh I know what you mean...it is just songs like "Hanging Tough" NKOTB or "Pop" by N Sync that sound like they tried really hard to fit in and it sounds dated...I agree with you ...music is music weather it is from 90 BC to Today..if it is good it's good. I just thought the originals have a lasting play quality and didnt sound like they were trying really hard to fit in.
