Phil Upchurch and Charles Stepney - "Black Gold", "You Wouldn't, Couldn't Be True" (1969)

...

Howdy!

A couple o' gems from Phil's album "Upchurch", from 1969. For those familiar with Producer Charles Stepney's work with Rotary Connection, Terry Callier, and Ramsey Lewis (and later, Earth Wind and Fire) , you'll notice that vibe immediately--the swirling harp, strings and the ethereally soulful vocals (Kitty Haywood and other Rotary members), along with Morris Jennings on Drums and a Kat named Donny Hathaway tucked way in the back, on piano and organ....

...Oh, yeah, and Phil is Killin' the guitar, by the way.....

and on the track, "Black Gold" Rotary fans listening closely will hear the first ideas for what would later expand into the classic track "I Am The Black Gold of The Sun"........

"You Wouldn't You Couldn't Be True"

"Black Gold"

Very nice Gap-Man. Classic cuts/album.

Dr. Phil has a gig coming up next month at Vitello's.
Yes, that Vitello's, the Robert Blake spot!

I told him if Sonya leaves him in the car to go back into the restaurant to retrieve something...HAUL ASS!!! smile
