I'm not a big fan of either, but I think Mariah has the musical edge.

They are TRUELY EQUALS,

When Im in the mood to hear powerful vocals, i listen to whitney,

when I want something more subtle and soft I listen to mariah.

But I can't put mariah over whitney in vocals, because mariah whispers way to much and sometimes sounds like a baby crying. lol

Both give me chills.

@ all these Whitney votes.

lol lol Hey i think mariah has more songs that i like, but thats due to whitney barely releasing albums.

whitney can really sing, she has 5 octaves, and power. I think people do like mariah voices, but out of the two, you have to admit hers can get the most annoying. lol So thats probably why they choose whitney.

Whutneys voice is easier to listen to, however her songs just do not put her up at arms compared to Mariah's tracks in my opinion

Whitney all day every day. I like some Mariah songs, but I never really warmed to her overall as a performer. I will always love Whitney. To hear her sing "Greatest Love of All" or "All at Once" is magical. Mariah never made me feel that.

Yep, all great songs that showcase Whitney's voice. "Didn't We Almost Have It All" is another one. Such a superb vocal performance from Whitney! I'm sorry but i've never heard any vocals by Mariah that even come close.

Oh yeah and Whitney has something else Mariah does not, which are acting skills! lol Whitney is such a natural on screen. I really enjoyed her in "The Bodyguard", "The Preachers Wife" and "Waiting to Exhale".

I would have to take Mariah, mainly off of the fact that alot of Whitneys best wasnt even hers to start, i give more to Mariah for being more involved with the writing than Whitney, Whitney to me is more of what Sinatra was not on his level, but she sang what others wrote for her, but again there is greatest to that, but since Whitney doesnt write music or lyrics especially early on, she loses to me. Now Mariah though she does these things, she is a TERRIBLE album artist, her album cuts all sound the same, and her last 3 albums have been identical, the time for her to focus more on the material and NOT the charts and her sex appeal has come.

I just don't care for Mariah. She's like a goofy, rhythmless Pussycat Doll. Too often her music is corny and dingy, which makes sense because her mentality is stuck up, immature and vapid. On top of being a dingbat, she strikes me as a huge opportunist who will do anything for a hit song and to be in demand. Marry her record label CEO, recruit any hit streak producer, shake her tail at a popular rapper of the moment so that he'll be a featured guest on her song and she can co-opt his fan base into hers. You name it. I just see her as being very disingenuous. The only time she seems kinda/sorta genuine is when she mumbling and whining some corny, self-help ballad…but it's corny, so who needs it?

Whitney just seems more 'real.' She may not write any of her music, but I believe everything she sings and never get a "phony" vibe from her. I do get one from Mariah, big time.

Writing and singing are different things, I never understand why people think that singers should write their own material. A singer brings the material to a higher level.

In classical music almost nobody sings their own material, it's only with pop music that singers should write their own material. Never got that.

Once upon a time, Whitney HAD 5 octaves and HAD power. Now, she has about as many octaves and vocal power as Barry White or Isaac Hayes had.

Mariah certainly does not possess the vocal power she once had, but, once upon a time, Mimi sang songs of great substance. They had deep meaning. And when she sang those lyrics, you believed her. Although I love a lot of Nippy's early catalog, I can't necessarily say the same thing about her songs and performances. Like someone said earlier, Nippy was just singing some stuff someone else wrote. Mimi was singing about what she had lived, which made her more convincing and a more geniune vocalist.

Mariah could NEVER come for Whtiney vocally in her prime. NEVER.

I can't take Mariah seriously. Personally, she was never an impressive singer like Whitney was.

It brings the audience and the artist to a personal level. Mariah writing her own ups and downs bring us closer to whom she is a s a person. Unlike Whitney who could sing "On My Own" but in the same time dealing with her drug issues and being with Bobby. Hypocritical.

Whitney can sing her ass off in her prime...but we didnt KNOW her..and she really showed us that in her personal life...we just went off of what we THOUGHT we knew of her...that wshe was a good two shoes pop singer....we couldnt really grasp any personal validation through her music.

Mariah on the other hand has given us her heart on a platter at times; Twister, Languishing, Breakdown, Butterfly, Make It Happen, Vanishing, Crybaby, Sunflowers Are For Alfred Roy, Fly Like A Bird...we have always had a slight grasp on her personal thoughts at the time.

You may listen to music, but are you listening to the artist too? Not with Whitney.

I get your point, but still, to me singing is a performance. It's like acting. The actor doesn't need to have lived the life of the person he or she is in a movie. But the feeling is there.

One of my favourites songs by MJ is "Man in the mirror", but he didn't write it. And i don't care. The way he sings it, he makes it his song and brings it to another level. That's what counts.

I prefer to critique the singer's entire artistry, not just their vocal talent. And even if I was just basing my opinion solely on vocal performances, Mimi still wins hands down.
