Janet performing Rhythm Nation for the Queen of England

From a 1990 Royal Variety performance in which several members of the Royal family, including Queen Elizabeth, were in attendance.

lol Me too. Somehow I can't picture her tapping her toes to that Sly and the Family Stone groove. Now, Diana, on the other hand...

I remember the headlines Diana made when she performed for the Queen while still with the Supremes. The news media said Diana's performance made her cry tears of joy. But I think she WAS enjoying it. Just because she didn't "get down" (come on you have to be proper if you're ROYALTY ohgoon ) didn't mean she didn't enjoy it. nod I imagined she was doing the same thing when Michael and 'em were performing in front of her. smile

I wasn't "hating", it's just that posting this in a new thread when it looks and sounds exactly like the other 100 times she's performed the same song on TV doesn't make it special enough for a thread by itself.

I always like it when she does stuff live, even when it's all screwed up, off key and breathy. At least it warrants a viewing.

It does sound kind of weird. I'm trying to imagine the expression on the Queen's face during that performance, too. She was probably like, "What the hell is going on here? I thought Celine Dion was performing?" lol

lol I don't think Celine had attained "performing for the Queen" status just yet.

Sheight have done. After all Celine killed it in 1988 winning Eurovision when it wasn't such a political joke in what was one of the greatest performances ever at the contest. Queenie might have enjoyed her more smile

Or maybe the Queen recognized the Sly & The Family Stone "Thank you" sample and

got a "funk face" expression of her face biggrin

It was a pretty big honour for Janet to play at the 1990 Royal Variety show since they were celebrating the Queen Mother's 90th birthday - so it was a bigger deal than usual.

I think the performance was on point - We're just not impressed because we've seen the routine 100 times after but at the time it was unique.

And as always it would be 1000 times better if she did it live - but what can we do?

The Queen often paraphrases this Janet track in her Christmas speech to her own rhythm nation.

We in the United Kingdom, have had an annus horibilus, things are getting worse. We have to make them better. It's time to give a damn. Let's work together, come on now!

Of course most of us are too full with Christmas dinner to get out of our chairs and do the full choreographed dance but the thought is there... cool

Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

Regrettably the RN tour was her only one I didn't see live, as I was only 14 or so when she went on tour then. By the time the janet. tour came around, I was ready lol.

It's all good. I was 9 at the time, my sister (she was 15 or 16 at the time) took me. It wa sona sunday evening and still can't believe my mother allowed her to take me on a damn sunday night? lol. She must have pulled out some BS to her, but it was worth it..great time and got a drum stick (used by her drummer)signed her and the rest of the crew. Rene spotted me and my sis and had us meet janet backstage. My sister was on cloud 11.

peace
