I really love these 'Dirty Mind Era' outfits of Prince, they're so nasty & gay. Today it's just gay (without nasty), see artwork for the 2010 tour & album ...

Concert of a lifetime! And a memory I will never forget. This was one of those events in history that I'm grateful to have witnessed myself, so that I'll always be able to separate fact from urban legend when it comes to the Prince/Rick James debates.

What would he have been arrested for in Jackson, Mississippi?!? Indecent exposure?!?

Somebody posted that here on the org last year on April Fool's Day of 2010. It's a photoshop. However, March 29, 1980 is the actual date that he and Rick performed here in Jackson so I just had to save it. Andy is a four letter word.

I have a friend that used to work backstage at the coliseum back then and he was working the night of that concert. He said Prince wasn't stripping yet when he came here. I think we were one of the earlier stops on the tour and he must have started stripping later on the tour trying to compete with Rick in the outrageous department.
My friend said Prince came through the backstage area very quiet and shy. He said Rick, on the other hand, walked around backstage smoking a joint as casual as if he were simply smoking a cigarette and that he cussed every other breath. If anybody would have gotten arrested in Jackson that night, it would have been Rick, not Prince. Andy is a four letter word.

So, who killed it each night??

So the mugshot photo is fake after all? Never did believe it.
Prince & Rick were as close to glam rock for black audiences IMHO during that time.

I love this pic of Prince with a pink skinny tie. He looks like he could be a member of Blondie circa Parallel Lines.

That's why I just simply called it Rick's Fire It Up Tour, since it was indeed his tour, so I could post it over in this section with folks that have minds of their own instead of over in the worshipping section. Andy is a four letter word.

Love the concert photos! Prince looks shorter than usual in the bikini pic--almost dwarf-like. The one of him in the skinny tie is nice too. It's like he tried out the Morris Day look on himself first.

PDogz would only know about the particular night that he attended. I betcha money Rick may have outdid Prince several nights and Prince may have also outdid Rick several nights. Both of them were competitive so I bet the other one took notes each time he got his ass whooped and came back stronger the next night. Both my favorites on the same tour trying to outdo each other, I wish I could have witnessed it. Andy is a four letter word.

Earlier on other threads, I had reported seeing this concert in 1979 (having estimated from memory). But now that I look at the official 'Fire It Up' tour dates, I know that it was the April 25, 1980 show in Charlotte NC that I attended.
Honestly? They both killed it, lol. The difference being (...in my opinion); Rick James obviously had a much bigger budget to work with. His staging was bigger, Rick had pyrotechnics and specialized stage props whereas Prince had none, and of course Rick was the headliner. Rick James & The Stone City Band tore the roof off! But Prince was a much more dynamic performer, and Prince seemed to have made the deepest impression (perhaps because no one knew what to expect of Prince before he hit the stage).
Once Prince was done and Rick hit the stage 30 minutes later or so; at least initially, Rick was no comparison. Many of the people that were glued to the edge of the stage when Prince was on began walking out once Rick came on. But Rick's show was RELENTLESS! Rick's set was well over 2 hours, whereas Prince only had about 40 minutes. Rick James literally declared FUNK WAR on the audience until he won everybody back over, and then he continued to funk everybody to death, lol. Rick's show was EXHAUSTING (...in a good way).
Both performers did their thing, but Prince was the one everybody was talking about the next day.

I DO NOT BELIEVE ANY OF THIS!!! SHALL NOT AND WILL NOT UNTIL I SEE IT FOR MY DAMN SELF!!!
Pdogz...please do not that this personally...my comment has absolutely nothing to do with your view.
I've just had an overwhelming NEED to see just one of these shows for myself before I leave this Earth...and I will do and/or say whatever it takes to finally make that happen. Without regard to anything other than that goal...no matter the consequences! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Well, when you get your hands on that Time Machine, please get in touch and let me know. I've got a few things in my past that I'd like to go back and change, lol.
(...no offense taken, lol)

You and me both Andy...I hate that I did not witness such a legendary showdown. Just reading about it in Rick's autobiography makes you wish you were there. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.
