The Osmonds were out long before the J5, but they started out as a barbershop quartet style group. Their image was changed when the Jackson brothers became popular. As far as the J5 goes, their music wasn't a lot different than other stuff on Motown (other than kids singing it). I Want You Back was written for Gladys Knight & The Pips. Other songs weren't original to them like Who's Loving You, Can You Remember, Stand, Daddy's Home, etc. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Oh, no offense taken at all.
I don't speak of what people would've done, either you do, are you don't. I don't care what angle the record companies had in mind on how they market a group. Less make sure we know what we are talking about when it concerns the history of The Sylvers. They didn't arrive after the Jackson's. The Little Angels started their careers in (Olympia, Leon, Charmaine, and James) the late 1950's. In the 50's they were appearing on TV and opening up for Johnny Mathis and Ray Charles.... late 50's / early 60's. As the "Little Angels and later as the Sylvers they recorded and released about a dozen or more singles before their 1st album.... The Sylvers I 1972.
I don't recall the Jackson 5 ever singing much three, four, or five part harmonies. I don't recall the Jackson 5 coming out of the gate writing their own music.

^ Most family groups had a lot of history prior to their debuts. The Emotions started singing when they were barely out of their diapers, so did the Isley Brothers. It seems as if compared to other groups, the Jackson 5's career started because Joe's career had tanked and his sons had more talent than him. I didn't get that vibe with the other family groups - Osmonds included.

Yep.
There's this misnomer the Sylvers started after the Jackson 5 or because of the Jackson 5, that wasn't or isn't the case.

I always thought that if The Falcons took off, there probably wouldn't have been a J5. Some of the younger children might not have even been born if Joe was touring all the time.
Joe's brother Luther was performing until a few years ago with his band Loose Cannons. Yeah no one never thought of that. Falcons becoming a success, Jermaine, Marlon, La Toya, Michael, Janet and Randy probably wouldn't have been born and it would've changed music history. Maybe it was fate that his band bombed lol

I guess there would have been a lot more "Joh'vonnie's" though. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B.
