Confused..if I actually like "Love Of A Lifetime" or not (Chaka)

U know what, I think I would actually like the song more had it just been sung by Green. I can see why they would hook Chaka with Scritti Politti to go into the pop zone, but this one just seemed like it didnt fit right with her. I think the song sometimes is over produced in bits of the breakdown...however I love the drum programming and the bass. The verse arrangement is tight too

Good For you

Heart of change

Got to be the heart of change

Good for me a heart of change

I know we'll make it better

definitley love the play on the way that works even though the sane thing is written three times.

It's a shame that Love Of A Lifetime has NEVER made it on a Chaka Khan greatest hits/best of album.

The song is on the cheapo "Platinum Collection" cd though.

I have that CD. This track is pretty cool definitely not classic it was an attempt to go for that mainstream pop sound in the mid-80s. Actually the first time I heard this song was on 'Soul Train' Go figure.

I've always LOVED this track! It was produced by David Gamson and Green Gartside of Scritti Pollitti, hence the heavy Scritti sound. It's a fun track and video.

it's not one of my favorite Chaka Khan tracks. That overproduced,synth-heavy 80s sound is annoying.

Definitley has that dated sound...even by 1989 it would have sound old.

nod I feel the same way about the previous album 'I Feel For You'.That music sounds so sterile and formulaic.Chaka's best album is 1981's 'What Cha Gonna Do For Me'.

It seemed like they were concentrated on marketing Chaka for the 80's and letting go of the sound she used to have. While it proved successful, even Chaka thought that was one of her least favorite albums. I forget what she thought of doing Destiny in her book. Still This Is My Night, My Love Is Alive, TTF, and I Feel 4U are good dated cuts.

IMO, the biggest thing "Love Of A Lifetime" had going against it was the fact the lyrics were muffled. I can hardly understand most of the lyrics she sings throughout the song. Also, it's a terrible song to perform live. She performed it live on The Tonight Show and some other show and it was a bloody mess both times.

Most of Scritti Polittis first release was like that, you defintiley need a lyric sheet to understand what he was saying at times.

Supposedly when Green and David began writing this track, they envisioned it as a follow-up to "Perfect Way". smile

Anyway, I was just saying the other day that the 1-2 punch of the first couple of songs on this album is KILLER! Starts with this, and then goes into the cover version of Charlie Singleton's "Earth To Micki" - I like Charlie's original version more (it's from his Modern Man album), but I dig Chaka's as well.

Somebody from another board did a mash up between Chaka's vocals and Charlie Singleton's track, I wish I saved that when I heard it. Even though its not official, as far as I'm concerned, that version is the ultimate.

I agree Timmy, as a coming into Chaka stan I think that her previous output was far more real to her style.

Militant & Harlepolis - I heard the track on harlepolis mixtape and I think I still like Chaka's version...more so because of the production. Charlies version is too muddled and he cannot really progress his voice on the track..it sounds alright but compared to Chakas singing I could not go back.

Militant..I just started listening to the album and I really like Watching The World.

"It's you" is analog synth heaven. Shame it's not on youtube anymore. Ditto with my fav track "Watching the world", which is also massively overproduced but thats how I like it LOL.

Gaga's wannabe 80's anthem "edge of heaven" has nothing on "watching the world" to me. And thats not a knock on Gaga, but the production and mixing on Chaka's track kills Gaga's and most of records released today. Most people hate mid 80's records for the same reason I love 'em LOL. Not a fan of compressed made for MP3 style mixing and engineering that todays music has.

Whoops, yes LOL. I heard it weeks ago. Sorry. Funny that as Gaga and all her generation (Iam 25 so that includes me) are going back to the 80's for pop music in general like it was some golden time LOL. When people in the 80's probably thought the 60's were the best time musically....

Anyway yes, I admire what she is doing on tracks like "Edge of glory", but I tend to like my pop music very well produced and mixed, and that just does not seem to happen with really anybody in todays pop music.

I grew up in the '80s and, let me tell you, it really was the golden period for pop music. lol

I agree, I love it. Always have. I love some 60's music too, but in general, its all about the 80's and early 90's for me.

This song recieved plenty of UK airtime in the 80s, only thing that irks me about it is the sax.

'I Feel For You' is such a contrived album. It was so blatantly commercial, designed to appeal to a younger crowd (which it did).Today, that album sounds horribly dated and doesn't reflect the "real" Chaka. For the follow-up 'Destiny',they used the same formula only this time,it didn't really catch on with the public.

I agree SoulAlive. The 12" of Earth To Mickey they called themselves adding "I Feel 4 U" in the mix during the breakdown...it was an obvious giveaway to recapure that magic.

They did a profile on her on Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous back in the 90's and they did talk about how her albums were selling well up until "C.K." and how it was a major blow to her when it flopped. That failure, along with her dependencies, led her to fleed the U.S. and set up house in Europe.

I'm grateful for the IFFY album. It literally saved her career and turned her into a household name, which she wasn't prior to that.
