Better debut sngle: "Vision of Love" (Mariah) or "You Give Good Love" (Whitney)? Out of these two artists, who had the better debut single in your opinion?

Both were strong, but I'll go with Mariah.

That's not Whitney's 1st single. It was Hold Me with Teddy Pendergrass. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I can't choose..it's two different time periods...both were fitting debuts for its time. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I love both songs, You Give Good Love isn't as boring as Vision of Love, but I don't feel like the song You Give Good Love, showcases whitney's voice, like Vision of Love did for mariah.
So i have to say equal
You give good love is a better song then vision of love, the production was beautiful it had a nice melody, that i can chill out to.
Without mariah's vocals on VOL, that song would have been forgotten because it is truely a boring melody. With that being said, i still like the song.
Sometimes i feel like mariah's voice is better and sometimes i feel like whitney's voice is better. It just depends on what i feel like hearing. But they are truely equals.

Then that ain't her single, it's theirs because it appeared on his album first and then hers.
"You Give Good Love" is her third single from her album. Not her first. "Someone For Me" was her debut single. [Edited 6/4/11 18:27pm]

Mariah's Vision of Love, because it came out of no way to become a #1 hit.
Just ask Arsenio! | |

I'm just waiting for the part where Vainandy just say "f*** both of these debut singles" already. You know it's going to happen in THIS thread!

Hold Me is a Teddy Pendergrass track. Huge difference.

It was on both Teddy's album and Whitney's album.

It doesn't matter whose album it was on. They're both credited, so it's still her 1st single, and the Grammys considered it as such. Say Say Say is on a Paul McCartney album, but it is still counted in Michael Jackson's hits in Billboard because they're both credited. Somebody's Watching Me is not, as it's only credited to Rockwell. Also, Take Good Care Of My Heart was on Jermaine Jackson's 1984 album before it was on Whitney's. Nippy's first single wasn't even "Hold Me", it was "Life's a Party" back in 1980 with Michael Zager when she was 16. Whitney made it through the music industry MUCH like Luther did: singing background for established acts and also singing jingles eventually moving up to featured spots on other artists' songs (for Whitney, it was Michael Zager, then Material in 1982 prior to her duets with Jermaine Jackson and Teddy Pendergrass). In FACT, her second live TV performance following her solo debut on Merv Griffin's show in 1983, was with Jermaine on, I believe, "As The World Turns", singing "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do" and that was in the summer of 1984). Whitney's duet with Teddy came out later that summer. So she was getting established word of mouth prior to her debut album.

This was a hard choice but since YGGL wasn't Whitney's debut, I can go with Visions of Love and be happy about it! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Right and also here's what so interesting about how Mariah suddenly was able to jump into a debut after a couple years with Brenda K. Starr, because Mariah DIDN'T have famous ties like Whitney. She had to be discovered to get signed and then spent two years perfecting the first album and perfecting her early sound and style so while sharing the same contributes as Whitney also had a style different from hers (hence her singing Minnie-type whistle notes). So the fact she blew up with "Vision" was really a surprise (welcoming surprise at that). I remember when I came home from school one day after kindergarten and hearing the song for the first time on the radio and then watching the video debut on BET's Video Soul. Nevertheless I was blown away by that. I missed Whitney's rise but I was right there when she got red-hot in 1986.

I dont think Whitney's You Give Good Love really showcased her vocal ability, to me anyone could've recorded that song. That song didnt move me like Mariah's 'Vison of Love' did. There was a duet with Jermaine Jackson circa 1985/86 'If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful' I believed it was released the same time as her debut album. I think that's when the public paid attention to her.

Right! YGGL was typical of any R&B ballad at the time though it did give her exposure enough to go to #3 pop and #1 R&B (though Clive obviously wasn't satisfied with it). Still didn't get why it took him until August '85 to put SAMLFY out lmao...

Between the two of them, I prefer "You Give Good Love." "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

so if we are speaking debut song, mariah wins.
if we are speaking better song, whitney wins.

bout damn near even
both classics...
...but it's gotta be whitney. her music just always had that extra touch of class to it that mariah's never has. a sonic kind of class... I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Though she was credited on the song and appeared on her album later on, it was still a Teddy single. "Hold Me", was NOT an official first Whitney Houston single. "You Give Good Love" was.

It's like the single for Careless Whisper. Some versions say Wham!, some say George Michael, and others say Wham! featuring George Michael. How is it not official? It's not a bootleg. It charted in Billboard. Even if you don't count it, someone above says You Give Good Love is not the 1st single from her actual album.
