White girls saying the words "n***a" OR "n***er" in their song lyrics is nothing new. Remember Patti Smith?
THIS^ infamous classic was produced by Jimmy Iovine. Yes, it's the same Jimmy Iovine that would be the future record exec for Interscope/A&M Records.

Exactly. Wanna trip on Kreayshawn? Then trip on Patti and John Lennon. Fuck a double standard.
The reality is that people are looking for any excuse to hate on Kreayshawn cos she just got a million dollar record deal based on ONE song and is killing it on the streets right now.
"Oh, let's call her out for doing the same thing every other rapper does, but it's not OK for her because of the color of her skin"
Now THAT'S racist.

Let any of these women mentioned in this thread use "kike" instead of "nigger" and damn near every one in this thread would sing a different musical. And miss me with the "get over it" bullshit.
But like armpit, I'm indifferent to this.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

No one is hating on her people just have a problem with her using that term I don't even like when the black rappers say it in every other sentence as well but at the end of the day she is white it doesn’t matter if where she’s from it’s acceptable she should know better and if she says it somewhere else people are not going to take kindly to that . And good for her if she’s killing it in the streets not bothering me her music not my cup of tea.

That's actually a good point. I remember the big stink it caused when They Don't Really Care About Us was released. Everyone was yelling that it was an anti-semitic, but when other artists use the word 'nigger' it is taken with gasps, but not in the same way if someone, non-Jewish I presume, used the word 'kike.'
Why is that? Is one word worse to use than the other? Either they are both inappropiate or appropiate to use. It should not be one or the other. [Edited 6/12/11 13:02pm]

I saw nothing wrong with MJ using the word kike either. Trip on intent, not words, people. |

IA with you actually, but that still doesn't change the reality of things either...

In Militant's world, saying, "end world hunger", makes it happen. Space for sale...

That's the opposite of what I'm saying. Can you not read?
Let me repeat it again. For at LEAST the third time.
INTENT is important. Not WORDS.
If you intend to make an effort to end world hunger, by all means go ahead and say it as much as you want. |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
We can play the ostrich game till we get drowned with sand, people don't bother with intent and you know it.
Whenever somebody say "kike", intent be damned, that fool is DOWN late that night or early the next morning, you might not see anything wrong with MJ's song but many did and went after him, lets not deny that. But when "nigger" comes flying outta people's mouths, you can bet your last dime trivializing excuses will follow and whats worse, the same people who would cry anti-semitic would tell you in the same breath to "get over it" if you got indignant about it,,,,,,intent or just mere words.
People are not that stupid, they know the severity of what comes outta their mouths. Nobody will say "kike" as a display of affection, admiration or humor. But folks are carefree when it comes to "nigger". [Edited 6/12/11 15:23pm]

You also can not overlook the fact that there are some Ashkenazi Jews & plently of Pro-Zionists (of all different racial backgrounds) within the entertainment industry that are responsible for maintaining the double standards concerning racial AND sexual slurs in music.

This is pretty much my sentiment. I hate the cultural conditioning that takes place these days. Its cool to throw "nigga" around freely but use the word fag or kike and the PC police come out in full force. You can't tell me what to be sensitive or what not to be sensitive about. I do agree with Militant in that context plays a part but I don't agree that words are meaningless. Even on their own, they can be ugly and insulting. I do wonder what type of reaction another rapper would get if they wrote a line like "rolling with my rug munchers, taking bitches' bitches" I see a lot of fake outrage these days. I didn't find anything she said personally offensive - just tacky. I actually find them being POSERS a bit more offensive than anything. [Edited 6/13/11 1:50am]

Words certainly aren't meaningless on their own right. The context where the statements are made and the full sentences used delimit the possible interpretations from a larger set (the "possible interpretations" may also vary somewhat from situation to situation and from person to person, but the point is that the scope is narrowed down in any case). If anything, many words are "too full of meaning" and that's why their vague use tends to confuse and upset people sometimes. If you leave a controversial term or a statement hanging in the air without further explanation then it's justified to criticize it. The term used here is obviously a risky one, so no one should be surprised that its use will be criticized by some. Of course, when you criticize other people the purpose should be to make them see their mistakes, not just use the criticism for venting out your own frustrations.
Rappers using such a word during a freestyle piece isn't that surprising to me, because they've most likely heard it on records so often that it's become a convention. I suppose the careless way these type of words were used in hiphop music especially during the late-1980s and 1990s also indicated to many that they are simply the way some young people speak (not just "nigga", but also "bitch", "ho" and so on). I admit that it seemed sort of cool to me too when I was 14-16 - around that age. This type of language was also justified with the notion of irony on many TV shows, movies and so on. However, that was then and I think enough time has passed from those days. It's not really even subversive anymore. These days if I catch an English speaking person use the word "nigger", or an equal word in some other language, I don't really think of it as "ironic" or anything like that. In most cases people still feeling motivated to use such words seem to have genuinely racist sentiments. [Edited 6/13/11 2:40am]

It says everything about American cuture that some standardly lazy use of "nigga" in a rap song gets all the attention whilst her constant threat of violence and murder via AK47s barely attracts a mention. Sticks and stones may break your bones but AK47s will pierce flesh.

That was what I meant about being more offended by her being a poser. This chick ain't gunning anyone down. (Just like 98% of rappers aren't, either) Its entertainment and I accept that for what it is. Its just very low-brow, low quality entertainment for a niche market.

Violence is the American way, land of the NRA. Why do you think action movies always make the most money? You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. that girl knows she has no business saying that.
the n-word is probably the most degrading word towards a race of people, its just plain rude for people to think its okay to use that word.

This chick is borderline mentally handicapped. Her and her "white girl mob" are a bunch of attention-whoring posers who can barely string two sentences together. She has some high profile rapper friends, which got her the attention she is getting now and after her gimmick wears off, she will be as forgotten as Khia. She is just an internet fad. Its like when a mentally handicapped person calls you stupid - are you offended? Its hard to be when you know the source its coming from. This chick ain't that bright and she ain't that deep. She's just a silly weedhead trying to be hip. She doesn't even deserve all the attention she's getting.
