Sly Stone arrested for coke possession

Sylvester Stewart, otherwise known as Sly Stone, the expressive frontman of '70s funk band Sly and the Family Stone was arrested last year for cocaine possession and is slated for a court appearance Friday, June 10, reports TMZ. On April 1, 2010, Stone was pulled over and his car was subsequently search by LAPD officers.

The 68-year-old singer was then found in possession of freebase cocaine. James Silverstein, Stone's lawyer, told TMZ that his client was riding in a friend's camper vehicle and was pulled over for a routine traffic violation.

This isn't the funk legend's first brush with the law. Back in 1989, Stone was extradited to California from New Jersey by the FBI after he had been avoiding a drug charge in Los Angeles, according to the L.A. Times.

I can only imagine how terrible that will be. Is he gonna sing one line, then stop, then yak for a minue, then pretend to start another one?

As much as I love Sly I do not look forward to reports that he is making new music or preparing for another round of gigs.

I agree.I saw him in concert in 2007 and it was a bizarre performance,to say the least.I support Old School artists trying to make a comeback, but sometimes it's just not possible.

Wow, I missed that part! lol It's like "what year is this? 1982?!" No one has said "freebase" to describe crack cocaine in years.

Sly Stone hospitalized

Funk legend Sly Stone was forced to skip a court hearing on Friday after he was hospitalized with heart problems.

The reclusive Sly and the Family Stone frontman is facing a charge of cocaine possession stemming from an arrest in April. Stone was a passenger in a pal’s car when police pulled them over for a minor traffic violation. A subsequent search of the vehicle turned up the illegal substance.

The veteran singer, real name Sylvester Stewart, was due to appear before a Los Angeles judge to answer the count on Friday morning, but his lawyer James Silverstein turned up without Stone and explained his client had been taken ill.

The judge postponed the hearing and ordered the 68 year old to return to court on Wednesday.

However, Silverstein is confident Stone will not face prosecution because he is adamant the drug was not his.

He tells TMZ.com, “The evidence is clear that the vehicle was not his. I believe that this case his highly defensible, and Stewart should never had charges filed against him.

“We firmly believe the DA (District Attorney) will lose this case at trial without us having to put on one witness.”

Just before he pled not guilty. Funny this didn't make the news so much as his bust.
