Oh, please, cigarettes isn't the issue, alcohol and 'crack' are... still. You're talkin' about someone who been messin' around since she was 16 and now you want her to kick all? It's not gonna happen anytime soon, those cigs are helping keep ol' girls mind kinda off her two other BIG issues. Hate to put it this way, but pick your poison.

Anyways "the voice" is finished, shot, too through. Hell its not gonna make a difference if she kick that habit anyways. Were she live? I'll send her a couple of boxes of her favorite brand.

In other words:

IT'S FUCKIN' OVER AS FAR AS "THE VOICE" IS CONCERNED.

BTW, Aretha and Chaka qualify more as "the voice" of music IMHO. bored2

YEP.. hasta luego. Did you notice "the voice" was in in quotes. wink lol

Look, Houston blew it but things could be much much worse, she could be dead or in prison. It's up to her to decide what she wants to do with the rest of her life, hopefully it includes sobriety. Her daughter may be going down the same road as she so, singing I would think wouldn't be the top priority.

Right. Now should be focused on getting her personal house in order. Her professional house can fall like the Rock of Gilbratar (sp?) if I care...

Whitney Houston is a LEO, lol. So her top priority is HER, lol. boxed

Chaka smokes too? That's so disappointing. Smoking is a pet peeve of mine anyway, but it especially pisses me off when professional singers smoke. It's like me as a guitarist intentionally banging my hands against a wall...eventually, my fingers will get abused to the point where they barely even move.

By not smoking, drinking or doing drugs along with vocal technique training, a singer can keep their range and tonality well into their 50's and 60's.

I know Chaka's voice was affected by cigarettes for a minute (check out her vocals on "I'll Be Good" with Uncle Ray then go to her version of "My Funny Valentine" years later when she stopped smoking).

I'm pretty sure Chaka still smokes. There used to be an interview on YouTube where she's smoking and she gets annoyed when the guy asks her about it. She blows it in his face. lol

The flip side... most 98.5% of musicians/singers have abuse drugs and/or smoked; their voices didn't go to hell, but Houston's did. Oops. shrug

P.S. Hell, her cousin Warwick has been a pothead for decades and "the voice" held up until recently.

Even Chaka and Aretha can still throw down. Cigarettes or not. Whitney must be a chain smoker like Eddie Kendricks. Eddie Kendricks smoked so many Menthols and Newports that by the time he became a solo artist, his falsetto was softer than it was when he was with the Tempts. And it got worse from there (though he was still able to sing until it got real bad and he developed lung cancer).

That's so sad. I feel sorry for the people that got hooked on cigarettes way back in the day, when they used to promote them on TV as if they were some sort of healthy snack. Anyone who started smoking after the 1970's KNEW what they were getting into.

I'm glad my mother only smokes occasionally. She's not one of those 10 pack a day folks. She uses it in moderation. Wish other people can do that. Smoking all the time is not the way to go.

I'm just always astounded at how some singers can smoke all day and never lose their beautiful voices (like Diana Ross), while others totally destroy their ability to sing right (like Whitney mad).

Diana smoked in moderation, she knew when it was too much when she had to do an album or perform.

Hmm....To me, their voices have become drastically weakened over the years just like Whitney's.

The only power singers that still sound the same as they did when they were young (in my opinion) are Gladys and Patti.

Unless she's on a real diabetic low or feels too cold or is sick with something (she has used these three recently), Patti's voice has weakened too. Gladys is the only one who still sounds like she did back in 1973. Chaka and Aretha have weakened but luckily they have lower voices they can still use to affect (I was blown away by Ree's riffs during a performance of "Angel" recently). Whitney's definitely the WORST. Her's and Dionne's. neutral

Ahh, ok. That could be it then.

However, in Whitney's case though, I also think it's more than just the smoking/drugs. I believe, like Aretha or even Mariah, she literally "broke" her sharp vocality by singing so intensely for so long (and maybe without proper vocal conditioning). It's almost like they have worn their voices out.

They all probably took their nodules out, that's probably what it is.

Ozzy Osbourne's singing voice still sounds the same, but he has those special genes that makes him "indestructible". wink
