Suede BEEN touring. | |

Yeah, they've been touring since last October or November. Some clips are up on YouTube. They sound pretty good, although Brett's voice is far from what it used to be.
I agree, my favorite is "Dog Man Star" and it's associated b-sides. Incredibly dark, bitter, very dramatic.... Kind of a mash between Ziggy-era Bowie and Berlin-era Bowie, with some Roxy Music thrown in - - only updated to the 90s. Great stuff.
But I like "Coming Up" too, just irresistible big guitars and choruses, and definitely a dark underside to it.

Here's a recent live performance of one of my favorite "Dog Man Star" era b-sides, "My Dark Star".
I love how the audience sings along w/ it like everybody knows it. You won't find many bands whose fans are as familiar with the B-sides as they are w/ the A-sides.

I love it too! The two singles they released from it had wonderful B-sides as well. The Primitive was one of the two B-sides of Lovers "Life's an elevator, it goes up and down. Life's an elevator can't you dig the sound?" -Marc Bolan

I kind of like the fact that a lot of '90s bands faded away. Too many bands hang around too long and end up leaving fans with a bad taste in their mouths. I would argue that Pearl Jam should have called it a day about ten years ago. Instead they decided to keep churning out mediocre albums.

I wonder why though. It sounds like some of the groups in the '60s, '70s and '80s seem to have something that the '90s groups didn't...

I think I know what you mean, arguably U2 and R.E.M. were the last two big bands that actually stuck together but nearly all groups that hang around for twenty or more years end up producing very weak albums. I kind of like the fact that many '90s bands will forever be preserved at their peak. Until they need the cash and do the inevitable reunion tour.

True. That's why I'm glad Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl moved on after Kurt's death. No need to replace him when Kurt Cobain, Krist and Dave WERE Nirvana, no one else.

it looks fantastic!! I'll be getting "Coming up" 4 sure. "Beautiful ones" is one of my fave songs!

That Tears B-side is ok a bit so-so for me.
"My Dark Star" is probably my favourite B-side of all, that version above is ok but his voice sounds a bit off or something... there's an acoustic version just done by Brett Anderson himself that i really love.
Have been listening to some more New Morning'' B-Sides, while sounding fairly decent i don't know if they would've really improved the album that much to be honest, they may need time to grow on me though, "Colours" was probably my favourite. The Dog Man Star b-sides are the ones that really stand out for me. We're here, might as well get into it.

Oasis i actually really liked their last 2 albums, and '"Be Here Now" i thought was pretty good too, i think they often get a bad rap from people because they're such a$$holes, i wanna punch Liam aswell. We're here, might as well get into it.

Pearl Jam, Nirvana and those other Seattle-sound bands i never got into, i'm sure their really good, just not my thing. U2 and REM i think are well past it, U2 haven't done an album i really loved since "Zooropa" We're here, might as well get into it.

I loved the first 3 Pearl Jam albums; all 3 are stellar.
Then, if you compile the best tracks from all the rest of their albums, you get one more amazing disc.

Honestly I've only heard it a few times. I probably should give their post Binaural albums another few spins but there's a lot of other stuff I would rather listen to.
I haven't got it yet but I found the Dog Man Star reissue for fifteen bucks.

They aren't all released yet - they are releasing them one at a time, a week apart. So far, only the debut and Dog Man Star are out in the UK. I ordered mine from Amazon.com/uk, the prices aren't weren't too bad. The first one arrived last Saturday, and I'm expecting Dog Man Star any day. I was hoping for it today, but got home and checked my mail and was disappointed. [Edited 6/11/11 21:36pm] * * *

Yeah it's looking like the 20th before they start arriving over here. What's the sound like on the remastered first album compared with the original release? [Edited 6/11/11 21:24pm] We're here, might as well get into it.

I haven't pulled out the old CD to compare to the original, but the remaster sounds absolutely terrific. * * *

Sounds promising!, i try not to get too hung up about sound quality anyway, tends to distract me from enjoying the music, it's the extras and artwork that i'm really interested in. Let me know what you think of Dog Man Star when it arrives. We're here, might as well get into it.

"Dog Man Star" arrived yesterday - - I love it. The sound is great, and the package is quite nice. I watched the DVD interview w/ Brett and Bernard and it was quite interesting, although I kept waiting for them to delve into the crazy drama surrounding that album, and they didn't really go there. It was tense in some ways, they seemed to be tiptoeing around alot of stuff, heh.
But excellent package and an album that still sounds amazing. Looking forward to "Coming Up", which has already shipped according to Amazon.com/uk.

Did anyone hear the Coming Up reissue yet? I think that Head Music is also out. If anyone has any reviews/opinions they would like to share I would enjoy reading them.

I've been listening to "Coming Up" quite a bit - sounds fantastic, just like the first 2. I pre-ordered "Head Music" and it hasn't arrived yet - hopefully in the next couple days.
They really did a great job with these. * * *

I haven't really scrutinised the tracklists, are there any outtakes or are all the extras demos and b-sides?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
There are only a couple outtakes, and they are rather demo-ish, not finished songs.
There are numerous demos, and of course a zillion b-sides.
There was an interesting cover of the Pretenders "Brass in Pocket" that they did for a compilation - it's included as a bonus on "Suede" - - quite cool take on it. * * *

"Head Music" arrived today!! Listening through it now. Brett says in the booklet that he feels "Head Music" is the most underrated Suede album; I kindof agree because I think it is undervalued but "A New Morning" is disliked far more and I think it's very good as well, so i'd call it the most underrated. "Head Music" was still quite successful - it hit #1 in the UK, had 4 hit singles (although they admittedly didn't chart as high as the "Coming Up" singles). It's a sonically adventurous album with some amazing moments - especailly "He's Gone", "Everything Will Flow" and "Can't Get Enough".
I also agree w/ Brett when he says in the comments that "Head Music" would have benefited from some "harsher editing". There are a couple tracks that should have been relegated to the b-sides.
But overall I'm really enjoying it. Been a long time since I've listened to this album all the way through. And as always some great b-sides.
One interesting note - the b-side "Let Go" was actually released as the A-Side in Sweden and went Top 5 in that country. [Edited 6/25/11 12:02pm] * * *

Just bought "Dog Man Star" today, very nice packaging and a low price, i like the fact that this band isn't all tight ass about charging top dollar, and it looks like a lot of care and effort has been put in to making these as good as they possibly can.
I hadn't heard the full 8 minute version of "Stay Together" before, that's what's stood out for me on first listening it's absolutely epic! blows the single version out of the water. I like the piano version of "Living Dead" and "This World Needs a Father" is a great b-side not included on Sci-Fi Lullabies". Also interesting is the alternative tracklisting mentioned by Brett Anderson in the liner notes, if he could rewrite the past he would've included "My Dark Star","Killing of a Flasboy" and "Living Dead"on the original album in place of "The Power" and "Black or Blue". There's a few strange inclusions...An acoustic French version of "The Power" and Ëno's Introducing The Band" a 16 minute ambient piece which probably should've been cut down to about 2 minutes, overrall though i'm very pleased.
Yeah interesting to hear Brett thinks "Head Music" is their most underrated album, "New Morning" definately gets the least amount of praise, even the band seem to have disbanded that album though. Which are the tracks which should've been relegated to b-sides on "Head Music"?. "Let Go" does sound sound like a real good song! [Edited 6/26/11 2:15am] We're here, might as well get into it.

In my view "Elephant Man" is the biggest mistake on "Head Music." Interestingly in his revised version of "Head Music" in the liner notes, Brett would leave off the title song in addition to "Elephant Man", "Crack in the Union Jack" and "Asbestos" and replace them with the b-sides "Heroin", "Leaving" and "Crackhead".
Glad you liked the "Dog Man Star" reissue! It's awesome. * * *
