Showtime At The Apollo

Man I miss those days, I be watching at 11 (I think that's when it came on.)

First, who was your favorite host? Sinbad, Mark Curry or Steve Harvey.

What are some of your favorite performances?

I remember every week, someone would sing "Who's Lovin You". Also, if you did a Gospel song, sandman wasn't comin for you.

Sinbad > Mark Curry > Steve Harvey in that order.

My favorite performance non-famous folks? When Sam the Man came out to take those non-singing fools outta there. I used to LOVE to hear that siren and the intro was one of the tightest intros in the history of television.

Rick Aveles was the host before all three or was in between Sinbad and Harvey.

I remember some cats did the Impressions "I'm So Proud." They made it like a 90s version like something Jodeci would do, I've never seen it again. Was amazing.

Yeah I think Rick hosted for a good year or two before Sinbad...

You mean Sandman Sims?

I had the opportunity to attend a couple of live tapings of "Showtime", but for the life of me can't remember who the host was at the time. It would have been one of the guest hosts that filled in between the time Sinbad left in '91 but before Steve Harvey picked it up in '93 (...I don't remember it being Mark Curry, but it may have been).

I met Biz Markie at one of those times, just hanging out in the lobby like any other person that came to see the show. He's very down to earth, and is very accessible in the Harlem community.

Incidentally, the theater itself, and the stage, are a lot smaller in person than it appears on TV.

My favorite host? Probably Steve Harvey (back when I still thought he was funny, lol).

My favorite performance? Probably when Lisa Stansfield was on, when many were blown away that a White girl sang "All Around The World", lol. Lisa turned the Apollo out that evening! I love when expectations get shattered like that.

Over the years, I've also attended several memorable concerts at the Apollo. That place is so full of history, that you feel honored just to even be sitting in the audience.

I wonder what happened to her. lol No matter who was on the stage, famous or not, if you were GOOD, she'd be sitting in the front row moving around almost like she was saying "SING IT CHILD!" lol

1. To my eyes and ears, Sinbad was THE only true host of SATA.

2. My all-time favorite performances were the ones from Expose. cool

That was "Miss Apollo" Eva Isaac. Not sure if she's still around or not, but she would be in her early to mid 70's if she's still with us.

I just read a story on IMDB that said she fell out with the Apollo management and stopped coming. Guess she got carried away, or they otherwise got tired of her antics, lol. That's too bad.

The Lisa Stansfield performance will always stand out to me because the whole audience embraced her that night. I was suppose to be there that day but I got sick that day my cousin went and she couldnt stop talking about it.

They also booked Latin Freestyle artists like Corina, Sweet Sensation, Noel, Lissete Melendez to name a few but I got the feeling the audience weren't into them.

Vanessa Williams singing the Right Stuff was a cool performance so was Whodini, Brand New Heavies, and Seductiion
