Nope. Chaka definitely has more of a status than Patti, sad to say. I usually think what happened to Patti's career was the case of bad management (sometimes), bad decisions, bad luck and sometimes being at the wrong place at the wrong time. The only times she really got it right was during the Nightbirds era and between 1985-1986 (commercially) and artistically (the entire Labelle years from '71 to '76). As great as she has been as a live performer, she's been pretty spotty on her recordings. I think her greatest moment as a recording artist came and went with the I'm in Love Again album. She never could repeat that magic no matter what else she did because it wasn't the same. Let's also not forget Patti turned down a lot of stuff that COULD'VE made her bigger than she is now.

I don't have strong feelings about Patti one way or the other but I do not believe that she has earned that title. I dig some of her music from the '60s and '70s but since the '80s she's been more adult contemporary than soul.

Yeah I know but I think Patti has always been more POP than Aretha in the sense that while she had the big voice relegated to soul/R&B stations, her status just wasn't the same as Aretha's so giving her that title was a little too much.

My friend worked at a hotel in New Orleans and told me how Patti had an entourage, diva demands, and brought her own set of dishes and silverware to the hotel. Her food had to be prepared in a certain way. And when the staff didn't do things in a strict fashion--Diva Patti threw a fit! This was in the 1980s. Must be worse now...

T84 and SOSG - my dissapointment in you both is complete, and I believe you both need to go look for your minds. But the "Patti Robot" thing is genius. She looks like she is tryin to fly over that rainbow she is alway screaming about in the other one. I love her.
This trifecta thing that people try and create where Aretha is Queen and Patti, and Chaka, or Gladys or whoever follow along after her is boring to me. The conversation really seems to simply be catering to Aretha's celebration of her title and role, and then all the other talent is pitted against each other for some sort of recognition. (Godmother of Soul? Where the fuck did that come from?) Yes, Aretha rules as the Queen of Soul as far as I am concerned, but that is reflective of her spirit and experiences, and should not be indicative or reflect on these other ladies. Somedays it just seem like the precursor to some Lil' Kim and Niki Minaj bullshit.
