Maybe so, but we have to take in consideration that music is everchanging. Toni tried to change with the times. She did hip-hop soul trax, pop ballads, etc.
The biggest mistake she made was trying to leave LaFace/Arista. She thought she could compete with the Destiny's Childs of the late 90s when she should have continued evolving as a pop singer. She should have left the hip-hop tracks to the kids and continued to make pop songs.
She sold out to hip-hop, that's as brunt as I can put it. I can't excuse that she just simply "wanted to change with the times". I could understand it when Prince, Michael and Madonna did it because they still had their trademark sound but it seems like Toni forgot where she came from...
Exactly...she is better off trying acting out or something. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

I sort of lost interest with her 4th album for sounding too hip hop cause I was getting tired of it that year and didn't end up buying it like her first 3 albums. But I checked it out later and that Neptunes single sounded okay, and she has some non hip-hop sounding songs on the album, so maybe it was just marketed as hip hop and failed to sell as a result? Libra had some good songs too, sounding like what Mariah had out at the time. |

It's ironic that her first two albums sounded so much more "adult" than the teenybopper hip-hop stuff that she started doing later. She really should have stuck with what she does best.....warm,soulful songs like "Breathe Again" and smooth pop ballads like "Unbreak My Heart".That's what her audience wants to hear. |

Which albums did u listen to?
I actually kind of liked "Burnin'." There were some good mid-tempos and ballads, while the up tempos sounded really dated.
"Gems" was hit and miss (but New Jack was dead by the time it came out). |

So was Micheal Cooper's Just What I Like album. The ballads that were hit singles were
cool but most of the album was a New Jack mess. Don't laugh at my funk

Agreed. If this happened in 1996 it would have been HUGE, in 2011 it warrants a meh.
I agree. It's like she's getting desperate to keep her name in the news. It's a shame that she doesn't realize that a good album would do the trick. She's really made a mess of her career. |

So, Toni's gonna take a page out of Miss LaToya's Playboy spread from '89?

I beg to differ. Nobody was studying LaToya until she did Playboy. When she turned herself into sex kitten she had steady work...mostly across seas, thank God. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired! |

Yeah man but thats also cause of Babyface he was on a incredible inspired run back then wrting the hits for her like "breathe again" thats one of her best songs. Also love the song "how could an angel break my heart" including the remix with 'face. |

Totally. Babyface helped shape the artist that she once was. The musical styling was very sophisticated and suited her better than anything she tries to do today. If it ain't broke don't try to fix it. |
