...the 1977 song "Black Lady" (about a hooker)

I've never heard this song before. The only Donna Summer albums I have are "Love To Love You", "Live and More", "Bad Girls", "The 12 Inch Dance Collection", and "The Wanderer". Then I have the "Love Is In Control" and "She Works Hard For The Money" 12 Inches and I also have the 2 CD "Anthology" set.

Looks like I'm gonna have to go back and get some of those older Donna Summer albums because I love a good hooker song. lol

I think that these are the 'essential' Donna Summer albums to have in your collection:

'Love To Love You Baby' (1975)---Even though the other songs aren't that great,it's worth having for the 17-minute title track. That song takes up the entire Side One lol

'I Remember Yesterday' (1977)---Notable for the influential synth-disco masterpiece "I Feel Love",this album is an interesting concept album in which each song represents a different time period.Side One covers the 40s,50s and 60s while Side Two brings you into the 70s.The sexy "Take Me" should have been a single.

'Once Upon A Time' (1977)---Even though,on many songs,Donna isn't using the full power of her voice (she sounds high or drunk on several songs, lol),this is a dazzling 2-record set. It's yet another concept album.

'Live And More' (1978)---I think most of the live versions here are superior to the album versions. The original 1976 studio version of "Try Me,I Know We Can Make It" is boring but on this album, they speed it up and it sounds amazing! Ditto for "Spring Affair","Faster And Faster To Nowhere",etc. As an added bonus, you get the stunning "MacArthur Park Suite".

'Bad Girls' (1979)---you already know how I feel about this album lol

Her 80s albums are a bit spotty, but I really love the 1982 'Donna Summer' album produced by Quincy Jones. That's a must-have.

I haven't read all the comments but is such an excellent overall album. It's not just disco but it has a very 70s feel. People might call that dated but I think it's vintage. I wasn't alive in the 70s, but it makes me imagine all that was cool about that time.

Think of all the styles

Straight disco("One Night....", "Dim All The Lights"....a straight disco song that starts with as a ballad and then explodes)

funk disco ("Bad Girls"),

rock disco ("Hot Stuff")

AC ballad ("There Will Always Be A You"),

rock ballad ("My Baby Understands"),

country ballad ("On My Honor")

techno ("Sunset People", "Our Love")

And yet it sounded perfectly cohesive!

I actually think had Donna not left Casablanca and continued to promote Bad Girls into 1980, "There Will Always Be A You" and "My Baby Understands" would've been released and "My Baby" could've won Donna a rock Grammy. nod

I trying to think....back in the day, what is the most number of singles most albums (even doubles) would yeild? It's highly possible and if that was teh case, it would've been fantastic for ANY of the ballads to have been released as a singles. I could've changed the course of her career. Could be good, bad or indifferent....Donna making full on ballad albums? it would depend on the producers and other writers.

Considering she fought for them to be PUT on the album, I think she would've had eventually released the ballads but I guess that's why she left because they were still trying to sell the same Donna '75 image that she spent the next two years of her contract getting away from.
