watched it last night...it was so good! I saw him in concert a few months before BLACKsummers'night was released, so I know what he's like live, but that storytellers performance was superb. excited

I didn't know the setlist, so the "DrownDeep: Hula / Reunion" medley was a nice surprise. They're 2 of my faves.

The arrangment of "Sumthin Sumthin" into "Get to Know Ya" was fantastic!

I need this entire show on CD just like MTV Unplugged.

I like Maxwell and was glad to see the clips. But I am so sorry to see that his voice is gone. I don't know what happened. Did he ever get training? Has he not protected instrument? Is it just natural/aging?

Whatever the case, its just not good anymore.

I'd like to see his band do an instrumental album ala Sweetback.

I am not talking about raspy. I am talking about hoarse and lost falsetto.

I thought that his voice was in pretty good form during the performance. I noticed that he used the female vocalist to sing some of his trademark falsetto notes on some of the cuts (i.e. "Drowndeep: Hula / Reunion), but he carried his own last night I thought.

Singers can get hoarse, it doesn't mean that there is permanent damage.

Simon LeBon of Duran Duran is going through it right now, probably more serious. Duran Duran had to cancel a lot of dates while Simon has been going to multiple doctors.

Adele cancelled some dates due to laryngitis.

As for Maxwell he's always had this voice. Listen to "Suitelady" from his debut. He's singing/yelling and very raspy sounding.

Different strokes. His voice has not been on point since on 08 in my opinion. I've seen him live, and the tv performances, and it has declined. The Storytellers was not awful, but it was no "Unplugged" vocally.

We don't have to debate this. I am just expressing my opinion.

Aww man I love me some Maxwell. Loved the show.

There is a distinct difference between 97's unplugged show and this show...it used to be completely effortless for him...now there is struggle...but nevertheless I still enjoyed the show.

The entire show is on VH1's website.... All the songs are there.

Here's the link: http://www.vh1.com/video/...lers.jhtml

I don't have cable so saw the whole thing online.... Awesome show... Really great performances by Maxwell and his superb band... Love the new arrangements, the songs, the whole thing was great.

Can't wait for the new album to come out already.

I kind of, sort of get what you are saying noticing the difference. While I still think Maxi did quite well on Storytellers, it nowhere compares to his Unplugged performance over 10+ years ago. Nevertheless, I think his performance on Storytellers still warrants it to be released on CD/iTunes, etc. I was a bit disappointed that he wasnt hitting his classic falsetto notes and instead letting his background singer hit them for him, but overall his voice is still strong. That version of Sumthin' Sumthin' was hott!

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

The article clearly points out the follow-up is due out this year, GC. You're slippin'.

I'll believe it when I hear it.

They have been saying this 4 quite a while.....and it's still NOT out.

According to Maxwell, blame the record company. He said it's been done & he wanted to put it out 6 months after the last release but the record compant said no & they are still the holdup. He said it's been done.

He's got that "IT" factor. His sound and delivery still works. He's kind of a male version of Sade. Though the industry and top recognized and marketable artists seem to run the air and video waves...Maxwell never ceases to fail in his performance or his music. Subtle, sexy, and serene.

New to the forum, so hello everyone. biggrin

Max is the whole package (looks, talent and musicanship) which is fast becoming a rarity. I agree with HotGritz Max has that "it factor". I'm not going to front. He could be standing in the middle of my kitchen wearing a shower cap, a dirty housecoat with flip flops and he would still be finer than sifted flour. heart

As for Max's performance on VH1 Storytellers I thought it was very good. Does he sound as he did fifteen years ago? No. Age brings about a change in some singers' voices.

Also that pristine sound of 1996-2001 came from a very pristine existence, no heavy partying, no drinking, (he didn't take his first drink until his 30th birthday) and no smoking. But his voice is not "gone" he still has a wonderful tenor.

Besides he is one of the sweetest people you would ever want to meet. Genuinely nice, genuinely kind and that ain't easy to find in the music business.

I agree..I enjoyed that.

With his voice yea age brings about a change sometimes but being that he was gone for what was it 8 years?....I would think that he shouldn't have any problems belting it out like he used to......I mean when I listen to cuts like This Woman's Work or Wherever Whenever Whatever from the unplugged CD it still gives me chills....his voice is positively soul stirring...almost brings me to tears. Everything worked..his band, showmanship and that silky voice of his...very few artists have the ability to sound as good as he did live. In fact I don't think I've heard anyone quite as good as him live in all honesty.

He will always have a fan in me.
