Richard Marx's feelings on American Idol Richard Voiced these opinions a few years back in an interview in 2003, so im surprised they went back and asked him about judging the damn show, but Richard once again, shows why he is so friggin cool, and hes 100% on point about the show and what its teaching young singers to do.

I think that if Mr. Marx caught a sniff of that American Idol money he would change his tune very quickly.

True but, hell, he still making mad dough off his songs though so maybe he's not fucking with them anyways.

I agree with Richard. It's basically a karaoke contest, and with all the money they're pulling in, you'd think they could hire a decent arranger. The song arrangements sound like some shit a high school jazz band would be playing.

Eh, for something like American Idol you are going to get very basic and generic arrangements. They can't be the least bit "edgy" for fear of offending someone.

Nah. The songs they're always playing are old chestnuts. There were more hip arrangements being played on Lawrence Welk than on some of the episodes of Idol that I've seen (which aren't many, but still...)

they have covered his songs a few times on there. I think Richard is paid very well just on the writing of "Dance with my father" and "this i promise you" by Nsync, those 2 songs alone rake in more money than AI winners all toghether will see in their lives. Richard is paid, big time on his own songs and the songs he wrote for Nysnc and Luther, and tons of Country Artists and also Striesand and Josh Groban. Yeah and he is totally right about "how can i see what an artist or singer is about when they are singing a old motown song with a horrible arrangement" this is so true. Everyone was all over this year and that PIA TOSCANO girl, but did anyone listen to her performances....its like he said, "sing loud and they turn on the applause sign for you" (yes the show has one of those) "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Yeah I read about it years ago. Richard don't even have to release his own album, he's already sitting in cash.

^^^I don't think Steven Tyler was broke. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Had he not quit cocaine in the '80s...

The obvious response from some has been "oh sour grapes", but im like WHY? because he thinks this show is boring? it fucking is boring, its awful and has gotten worse and worse because its not doing anything, i have to post the video of this interview, because the girl who interviewed him LOVES AI and obviously Richard is pointed out what he doesnt like, but he didnt take the approach and bash the singers which was cool. ANd at least he sticks to what he felt about this show back then, no double standard, unlike PRINCE who bashed it then performed on it??? Sure, more money than the winners but what about the judges? You are comparing apples and oranges.

The judges get PAID. | |

Richard's stuff is great go get his "Stories To Tell" disc that just came out through walmart as a 3disc version, one disc is a new concert dvd, one cd is acoustic versions of some hits and some songs he wrote for others like Nysnc (and he does that better by far) and the third disc is all hits including his new one at AC radio/charts, but the cool thing is that he resang everything, and his voice has not lost a step and honestly i havent heard ANY singer alive that hasnt lost something over a 25 year stretch, i mean the dude sounds exactly the same. I might get it considering what they sell in Wal-Mart when it's not the latest commercial shit lol

Why would he want to be a judge? I mean outside of Randy Jackson and maybe Simon who has cred to criticize?? JLO and PAULA talking about how people sing?? really?? How about we get actual singers to judge, lets see what happens then. and lets not talk about ELLEN judging, whats next Ms. Piggy [Edited 5/21/11 16:59pm] "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

You mean had not Run-DMC basically resurrected Aerosmith's career. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Dude don't give them ideas they MIGHT just do that if Steven and J-Lo decide to ditch it after this is over.
- E-mail - orgNote - ![]() |
But again you said he was paid, maybe someone still wants to keep his cred, everyone cant be the king of double standard like Prince "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I admit I'm not a fan but what cred? If he wrote songs for N'Sync I do not believe that credibility is a concern.
Besides, maybe he could make a small impact on the show and steer them towards what he views as being better singers? Probably not but you never know. He might catch on and be very popular.

The show wasn't built like that, hence why he won't do it.

A guy who has written entire albums worth of material for other musicians complains about American Idol being karaoke. This is just too easy.
- E-mail - orgNote - ![]() |
How is that a connection? Those songs are written for them, the Idol people are covering songs they most of time dont even know, or have a clue what they are. Big difference. Idol is Karoake, just as bad as some drunk in a bar singing along to lisa lisa's all cried out, if thats the case put that shit on tv too.

first of all a 47 year old is not going to have some "pop culture" popularity all of a sudden, this is not the 80's, hes too old for people to just get into him. Two the show isnt going to change its course because the public could care less about what is put out there, we forget William Hung had a top 30 record. And last, why do we cherrypick the artists he has written for, ok nysnc all of sudden is shit, but what about Luther and Lionel or striesand, so is Prince shit because he wrote for Carmen ELectra he has no cred for anything? i mean come on now. ANd last thing said that Nsync song is actually good, and the way it was crafted by him actually gave them their biggest hit, and i think we all have been saying someone like GaGa makes good pop songs, well im sure tons of people on this forum thought the same of Justin Timberlake too, so again its cherrypicking.
