Parents group targets Billboard performance by Rihanna, Britney Spears

The Parents Television Council is protesting what they term an "explicit" performance by pop artists Rihanna and Britney Spears on Sunday night's broadcast of the Billboard Music Awards on ABC.

The watchdog group is asking members to contact parent company Disney about the opening act of the 8 p.m. broadcast, which featured both singers performing Rihanna's song "S & M" while wearing bondage-style outfits and dancing on poles.

The singers also staged a pillow fight and shared a brief kiss at the song's conclusion.

"The song title alone reeks of the adult entertainment industry and last night's performance wasn't far from it," said PTC president Tim Winter in a statement.

“What happened in Vegas should have stayed in Vegas, as the saying goes. It certainly has no place at 8:00 pm on the publicly-owned broadcast airwaves.”

The watchdog group has campaigned against other shows featuring frank depictions of sex and violence on cable and broadcast television including MTV's "Skins," "Glee" and "Gossip Girl." Winter told The Hill earlier this year that the PTC's focus is protecting children watching broadcast TV during primetime.

"I cannot imagine what would possibly lead the ABC television network to air a profanity-laced, S&M sex show on primetime broadcast television," Winter said.

"The overtly sexualized performance by Rihanna and Britney Spears was no accident or mishap, but a deliberate effort to target teens with images and lyrics that that glamorize whips, chains and other sexual fetishes."

Winter said his group plans to contact ABC-Disney as well as advertisers including Chevrolet, Old Navy and McDonald's to ask if the performance accurately reflects their corporate image.

He noted that expletives broadcast during the 2002 and 2003 Billboard awards eventually became a crucial part of the court case that overturned the Federal Communications Commission's indecency policy.

Some folks just have too much time on their hands. Here's a novel idea: if you don't like and/or agree with what's on your television, TURN THE CHANNEL!!!

Beyonce's performance at the Billboard Music Awards is very similar to one by Lorella Cuccarini

Beyonce's performance of 'Run the World (Girls)' at the Billboard Music Awards is very similar to one last year by Italian pop star Lorella Cuccarini.

Beyonce brought down the house at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night with her riveting performance of her new single "Run the World (Girls)."

But the visual spectacle -- the singer danced while interacting with computer-animated graphics projected around her on a white screen -- may not have been an original idea.

Italian pop star Lorella Cuccarini put on an extremely similar performance last year.

In a video of the two productions side-by-side, wings flap around Beyonce as a flock of birds take off above Cuccarini.

Within seconds of each other, both singers play with animated boxes and globes. Later, as Beyonce pretends to eat the world, Earth floats above Cuccarini on the screen.

Towards the end, Beyonce is joined onstage with her "army" of female dancers, while Cuccarini marches in-step with digital dancers.

The Italian pop star's show ends the way Beyonce's began: with enveloped in wings.

Do you think Beyonce's version is a rip-off of Cuccarini or mere coincidence?

^^I'm surprised...but not really. Make any sense? lol

You would think that the graphic designer(s) would create a completely different concept than the Cuccarini performance...I mean, people would probably still say it was a swaggerjack but this? This is more like a BLATANT swaggerjack.

Bey probably thought: Nobody (important) knows who this broad is, so they'll think it was all me. Who run the world? evillol

Honey, stop talking and just create the music.

Don't they have to be? I mean if she was swaggerjacking from others and doing a technically worse performance, there'd be no excuses to be made for her.

Okay I actually liked Beyonce's performance even though I hate that song so much lol .....Loved all the special effects ..but I heard Stephen Hill of BET tweeted that her performance was "The 21st century version of Micheal Jackson's Motown 25 moment"..and I have to give him this face for that... - _- *[Variation of N word snip - luv4u]

Please*.

So did I...I thought her performance was truly creative with the graphics/special effects behind her but it still won't convince me to download this single actually this live performance was better than the music video. To compare this performance to Michael Jackson's Motown moment c'mon Stephan Hill Really???? Go sit down somewhere.fishslap

Anyway, Beyonce had the performance of the night. The whole graphics/powerpoint thingy was cool and everything during the performance was executed perfectly.

Now the FLOTUS needs to have a seat with that whole "Beyonce is a role model for younger girls" mess. She would be singing a different tune if asked whether she would allow her daughters to dance Beyonce's moves or sing her lyrical content! lol

I agree that Beyonce had THE performance of the night. Her singing and dancing were on point. As for Bey being a role model, SHE IS. I have never seen this woman do anything that was not classy. On stage, her dances are sexy, but NOT pornographic. I have never seen her simulate oral sex, tie men to a board, or do anything else that was unclassy. I still don't get how people can say that she is not a role model. Can you name any other female singer or star of Bey's magnitude who is more of a role model than she is. IMO, all of this talk is jealousy on some people's part. What else does she have to do to prove her talent? She is an exceptional performer, she is great LIVE, she CAN sing. Her concerts are unbelievable and EVERYTIME that she performs on TV, she never fails to amaze me with her professionalism, energy and entertainment value. BTW, I am not one of these "stans" or fanatics of Beyonce, I just think that she deserves the awards and accolades that she gets. She IS talented. We are not talking about someone who can't sing, dance or entertain. Let's give credit where it is due and Beyonce deserves to be recognized for what she has achieved AND for her TALENT and HARD WORK.

The hype over this is killing me.

It was a great performance. Her interaction with the screen was dope for the way they stayed in sync with each other. But once the screen portion was done, it was the same thing we've seen numerous times from numerous performers: an army of dancers on the stage. Nothing groundbreaking there, especially considering the choreography at that point was pretty basic.

She's an excellent entertainer and definitely talented. But she lacks a proper catalog to be considered a true legend. As stated above, she has been chosen to be an icon/legend even if the audience is whispering otherwise. In fact the performance was an excellent indicator of the state of the industry right now. She's partially on top by virtue of the lack of balance in this industry. She has no competition. She was the best performance of the evening, but when you're sharing the stage with:

Rihanna "I don't know any man that can refuse this pussy...Pussy, Pussy, pus-pus-pus-pus Puuussssyy..."?
Britney "I retired a looooooooong time ago, I'm just here for the snacks" Spears?
Will.I.Am and the "Even I know we're on some bullshit" Black Eyed Peas?
And "I can't believe I got into this party! Fuck it, I'mma wild out til I get spotted by security" Kesha??

It ain't that hard.

Tha fuck?! I've never heard ANYBODY call Janet a role model, unless they were speaking musically. People praise Janet because she's GOOD; she's never been ashamed of/apologized for her sexuality. She is what she is, and I doubt she cares what anyone thinks about it. I also doubt she's sitting at home in a funk because the FLOTUS never called her a "role model for younger girls." She's paid her dues as a TRUE icon, so fuck what anyone else thinks.
