Many of Whitney's songs were remakes. Luther Vandross & Mariah Carey also did a lot of covers. What's the big deal? Whitney never claimed that her songs were original to her. She was given songs to sing by Arista or Clive Davis.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

hmm

Uh,,,settle down. Nobody said it was a big deal. Just something I discovered today and thought it was an original, it wasn't a slam against her or anything.

I'm surprised you didn't know this? Whitney was kind of a remake queen. She had many remade hits:

The Greatest Love Of All

All The Man I Need

For The Love Of You

You Light up My Life

I Go To The Rock

Joy

I Will Always Love You

I'm Every Woman

and a few more I can't remember.

Cool.

When I first heard it, I didn't know it was a remake either. However, I was working in radio and learned from a friend that it was a Four Tops song. I then picked up the Smooth Grooves Weddings compilation and it had the Four Tops version on there.

I'm not that fond of schmaltzy ballads, but I have a soft spot for that one, what a beautiful melody. I didn't appreciate her version of Chaka Khan and Dolly Parton's songs, but I def think she put her stamp on this.

Yeah, didn't know that "Step By Step" was Annie Lennox' before I joined the org. I think I prefer its original though.

Ok, here's a question for you....

Is this a remake? Its a Sam Dee's composition. I'm convinced this one is a remake, it has all the ingredients of a late 70s/early 80s midtempo, beside Sam Dee was all over that period. She also covered one of his song; "Just The Lonely Talking Again" by The Manhattans.

I don't think it's a remake. If it is, the original was never released. According to BMI, the song has only been recorded by Whitney (which may not be true). I have the sheet music for this song at my parents house. When I go home next time, I will look and see what year it was published. That will tell us more about the song.

I'm almost completely positive "Lover for Life" is an original.

"Lover for Life" is original.

Anyways, here's hits Whitney did that was original for her:

  • "Hold Me"
  • "You Give Good Love"
  • "How Will I Know"
  • "I Wanna Dance with Somebody"
  • "So Emotional"
  • "Where Do Broken Hearts Go"
  • "Love Will Save the Day"
  • "One Moment in Time" (as far as I know)
  • "I'm Your Baby Tonight"
  • "Miracle"
  • "I Have Nothing" (as far as I know; I think this was one of those songs Ms. Holt passed on)
  • "Exhale"
  • "Why Does It Hurt So Bad?" (my favorite Whitney song of all time)
  • "Count on Me"
  • "When You Believe"
  • "Heartbreak Hotel" (another one I really love from her)
  • "It's Not Right But It's OK"
  • "My Love is Your Love"
  • "I Learned from the Best"
  • "Could I Have This Kiss Forever"

I think it's because she vocally performed wonderful on the songs she did cover and to be frank, most of the songs released by the original artists weren't even hits until Whitney touched it.

Whitney had some great years and she used to be a fantastic singer. I still listen to her music and I enjoy it, but at this point I can't see her ever getting that voice back to what it was years ago. It's a shame really.

I knew this song was a remake. When Whitney's version came out,our local Quiet Storm station began playing the Four Tops original too lol I was shocked when I found out that "Saving All My Love For You" was a remake.Clive is sneaky....he gave Whitney alot of songs that weren't big hits the first time around, thus the public wouldn't know that it had been done before, lol.

See, this is why her debut was stellar!

Two of my fave ballads(that one & "You Give Good Love") and her FUNKIEST jam ever "Thinkin' About You".

I heard a couple of songs pre-debut that I'd like to listen to in its remastered form, such as....

Given that she was a session singer before her debut, I'm sure there are many demo songs she recorded for other artists that are floating around.

You can add The Manhattan's "Just The Lonely Talkin'" to the list of remakes too.

She did that one on the Whitney album (1987)
