Lettuce and Soulive Couch Tour Tonight (jazz/funk bands)

Hi everyone, I can't recall how good or poor the cell reception is at club nokia. if its good, i'll be streaming at least the lettuce set and some of the soulive set (for as long as the battery lasts).

if you haven't heard of these bands, they are very good and well respected musicians. soulive is more of a jazzy, groove oriented band where as lettuce is more straight up funky and in your face.

check 'em out on youtube if you wanna get a taste. the opener comes on at 9, so i'll probably start streaming around 10 pacific.

ah, thats awesome! you'll have a great time! i should mention that the sax player, karl denson, isn't part of the band and was just sitting in. he has his own bands, karl denson's tiny universe and grey boy allstars. he used to be in lenny kravitz's band. you should definitely give at least KDTU a listen too. smile

that said, they are touring w/ horns, at least they had horns at the LA show.

Soulive / Lettuce Funkify Portland, Oregon
Wonder Ballroom, 9:00 P.M., 5/17/2011
A thoroughly funk-starved mob of approximately 800 turned out Tuesday night here in Portland Oregon, to feast on a big helping of funk / jazz / soul from this crew from the Northeast.
OPENERS:
Break Science-
The essential DNA is here for something rhythmically dynamic. Live beats (ala a pretty trick drummer) and hard breaks (ala a hard drive). Zero for stage presence, they do succeed in modestly warming up the house. Think of a lukewarm set from, say, Z-Trip, and you get the idea. If only they had his panache.
Soulive-
They took the stage with suave confidence & proceeded to lay into enthusiastic crowd for the first 2 tracks. Make no mistake, the Evans brothers on keys & drums..and Krasno on guitar come to PLAY. This is groove-driven jazz / funk of the first order...and at wide-open throttle, this trio can musically growl like a Lambo. Nice tight pocket drums, wailing Hammond work & transcendent mellifluous soloing from Krasno work a definite magic. Only misstep in this set is a 3 song Beatles covers detour (which sucked the life out of a fairly hot room). They are worthy covers, they just don't belong in this set. Thankfully, they brought things back around for the close. Sticking to their core material, they are definitely top-shelf in their genre(s).
HEADLINER:
Lettuce-
At the top of the bill for a REASON. Straight-up jazz / funk assassins, Lettuce goes right for the jugular, with no excuses, no apologies & no chaser. The horns & bass (the only things Soulive potentially lacks) are a welcome arrival...and nicely round out the mercilessly tight rhythm section. A bit like DMB, The Mothership & Phish in a 3-way collision with JB showing up as traffic cop.......every bit the funk / jazz groove attack that you'd expect, this crew solidly delivers.
All-in, it's twenty odd bucks WELL spent. Only dings I'd give them were the rather "embryonic" set from Break Science, and the Beatles wanderings.
Grade: "A" minus
Favorite moment: Lettuce's entire set.

haha, nice review man! i wish i could have enjoyed the show in LA as much, but having just seen prince at the troub two nights prior, i knew it'd take a miracle for me to enjoy it.

and yeah, break science was awful. doesn't even sound like music to me, just noise.
